Giumini Family History, Part IV

Giacomo Pietro GIUMINI⁴ (1710-1751)

144C. Giacomo Pietro "Pietro" Giumini⁴ was born on November 8, 1710, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. His godparents were named as Giacomo Giumini, likely a cousin, and Mrs. Maria (Giumini) Piezzi, his paternal aunt who had recently married his maternal uncle.^{[Bap 1710]} Pietro married Maria Maddalena Sartori³ and had at least one son:

Giacomo Pietro was confirmed on June 12, 1719, when Giuseppe Olgiati, Bishop of Como, held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver. His sponsoring godfather was named as Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio.^{[Con 1719]} Francesco was the town notary and father of the future notary of Giumaglio, Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi, who was born two months earlier.

After Pietro's and Maddalena's marriage, they lived with Pietro's parents through at least 1741.^{[Cen 1741]}

Pietro and Maddalena named Maddalena's brother, Giovanni Sartori, and Maria Piezzi, likely one of Pietro's maternal aunts, as Giacomo's godparents.^{[Bap 1740]}

Pietro was named as godfather to Giuseppe Antonio Giumini in 1732^{[Bap 1732]} and to Maddalena's niece, Maria Catterina Gasparini, in 1744.^{[Bap 1744]}

Maddalena was named as godmother to nephew Giacomo Pietro Sartori in 1732^{[Bap 1732]} and two baby girls named Giovanna Maria Marchese in 1737. The first was the daughter of Giovanni Pietro Marchese and the second the daughter of Carlo Marchese, the elder brother of Giovanni Pietro.^{[Bap 1737A,B]} Years later Maddalena was named as godmother to Giovanni Francesco Piezzi, Pietro's maternal cousin, in 1748,^{[Bap 1748]} and as godmother and apparent namesake to niece Maria Maddalena Sartori in 1752.^{[Bap 1752]}

After Pietro's father's death in 1748, Pietro's 16-year-old sister Domenica lived with his family while his widowed stepmother and 5-year-old half-sister lived elsewhere in town.^{[Cen 1748]}

Giacomo Pietro Giumini died on December 6, 1751, at his home in Giumaglio, following an apparently abrupt illness that necessitated all his last rites be administered on the 5th. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Pietro was only 41 years old.^{[Dth 1751]}

Maddalena and her 11-year-old son carried on after Pietro's death. Later, son Giacomo and his young family lived with her through at least 1776.^{[Cen 1760-1776]}

Maria Maddalena (Sartori) Giumini likely died between 1776 and 1795,^{[Cen 1795]} perhaps between 1785 and 1795 when incomplete parish records were back entered. She was likely in her 70s.

Maria Anna (GIUMINI) SARTORI (1715-1742)

144D. Maria Anna Giumini was born around 1714 or 1715.^{[Cen 1741]} She may have been baptized as "Joanna Maria" on September 2, 1715, and born that same day in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. As "Joanna Maria," her godparents were named as Giovanni Antonio "Terinnus" (Cerini or perhaps Marchese?) and Mrs. Maddalena (Ianzi/Ianzini) Giumini.^{[Bap 1715]}

Anna married Giovanni Sartori but apparently had no children. She and Giovanni were recorded in the parish census of 1741 without any children of their own but were taking care of Maria Sartori, the 8-year-old daughter of the late Antonio Sartori, whose relationship is as yet unknown.^{[Cen 1741]}

Maria Anna was named as godmother and aparent namesake of Maria Anna Piezzi^{[Bap 1737]}; and as godmother of Giacomo Piezzi.^{[Bap 1739]}

Maria Anna (Giumini) Sartori died on November 16, 1742, at her home in Giumaglio. She was one of five adults to die within a period of six weeks. Maria Anna was recorded to have been "about 27 years" old. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1742]}

Giovanni and Maria Sartori were not found in the parish census of 1748.^{[Cen 1748]}

Giovanna Maria (GIUMINI) CERINI (1721-1755)

144G. Giovanna Maria Giumini was born on June 18, 1721, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. She married Giovanni Cerini^•, who was three years her junior, on April 24, 1743. They had at least two children before her early death:^{[Cen 1748]}

Giovanna and Giovanni wed on April 24, 1743, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Don Rodolfo Pozzi, the town notary, and Giacomo Piezzi.^{[Mar 1743]}

Giovanna and Giovanni named the following as godparents to their children:

1. Giacomina: Don Rodolfo Pozzi and Anna Maria Piezzi^{[Bap 1744]}; and
2. Pietro: Giovanni Pietro Marchese, Giovanna's maternal uncle by marriage, and Maria Domenica Giumini, Giovanna's younger sister.^{[Bap 1752]}

Giovanna was named as godmother to cousin Giovanni Marchese (son of Giovanni Pietro) in 1745^{[Bap 1745]} and later was named as godmother to Giovanni's younger sister, Maria Domenica Marchese in 1748.^{[Bap 1748]} Husband Giovanni was named as godfather to Giovanna's cousin Maria Domenica Piezzi and Giovanna's nephew Giovanni Maria Giumini, who likely died in infancy, in 1752.^{[Bap 1752]}

Giovanna Maria (Giumini) Cerini died on February 28, 1755, at their home in Giumaglio, apparently from a sudden illness that necessitated all the last rites be given the day before. She was only 33 years old and had been married 11 years. Giovanna was buried on March 1 in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1755]}

After Giovanna

After Giovanna's death, Giovanni remarried by 1760 to Maria Margherita Pedrotti^• between 1756 and 1757.^{[Cen 1748]} She was 14 years his junior and gave him 10 more children over the next 23 to 32 years!^{[Cen 1748-1795, Bap 1778, 1782,1784]}

Two children are not confirmed as Margherita's: Angela has not been found in the 1795 parish census and by the 1817 census was married. Felice was listed immediately following confirmed children Giacomo Pietro Maria, Maria Margherita, and Giovanni Antonio Maria, but his relationship was not recorded and he was nine years younger than the next youngest. Alternately, Felice could be the son of Giuseppe Maria (Sr.), whose wife and infant daughter were recorded in the same household.^{[Cen 1795]}

Eldest daughter Maria Giacomina and 8-week-old son Giovanni Pietro were confirmed on June 16, 1761, at the age of four months, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giacomina's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria Domenica (Adami) Pozzi, the wife of her godfather, Don Rodolfo Pozzi; and Pietro's sponsoring godfather was named as Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti.^{[Con 1761]}

Giovanni was named as the godfather, and likely namesake, of nephew Giovanni Maria Cerini in 1761.^{[Bap 1761]}

Sons Giuseppe Maria^• and Giacomo Pietro were confirmed on July 28 and 29, 1769, when Giambattista Muggiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver, respectively. Their sponsoring godfathers were named as the Rev. Dom. Giovanni Calzonio of Valle Onsernone and the Rev. Dom. Giacomo Filipponi, Vicar of Giumaglio.^{[Con 1769]}

Bishop Muggiasca returned to the valley seven years later and confirmed children Giovanna Maria and Giovanni Antonio Maria at the Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo in Gordevio on Tuesday, July 30, 1776. Their sponsoring godparents were named as Maria Maddalena Piezzi and Giovanni Battista Lesina^•.^{[Con 1776]}

Giovanni Cerini died about November 24, 1803, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Giovanni was 78 years old.

Margherita carried on another 13 years or more and was enumerated in 1817 at the age of 78 with her recently widowed daughter-in-law and seven grandchildren from her late son Giuseppe^•.^{[Cen 1817]}

Maria Margherita (Pedrotti) Cerini likely died between 1817 and 1826 during a gap in parish records. As such she would have been in her late 70s or 80s.

Maria Domenica GIUMINI (1731-1762)

144J. Maria Domenica Giumini was born and baptized on October 13, 1731, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. She was the third daughter in a row to be named Domenica, the previous two apparently having died. Her godparents were named as Giovanni Bonetti, her maternal uncle by marriage, and Maria Lesina.^{[Bap 1731]} Domenica married Giuseppe Antonio Giumini, the son of Don Giovanni Giumini (relationship as yet unknown). They had six children, including one pair of twin boys, but only two survived to adulthood:^{[Cen 1748A-C]}

Prior to her marriage, Domenica lived with elder brother Pietro, who based on their 21-year age difference was more likely a stepbrother. Their widowed stepmother and younger half-sister lived elsewhere in town after their father died.^{[Cen 1748A]}

Giovanna was also named as the godmother of Giovanni Bonetti in 1747, just after she turned 16 years old.^{[Bap 1747]} A few years later she was named as the godmother to her nephew, Giovanni Pietro Maria Cerini, who likely died 7 days later in 1752.^{[Bap 1752]}

Domenica and Giuseppe married on February 9, 1752, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. They were recorded to be related to the third and fourth degrees of consanguinity (perhaps second cousins, once removed) and obtained dispensation from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Pozzi, Carlo Antonio Marchese, and Domenica's cousin Giacomo Pietro Piezzi. Despite the very close, nine-month time between their marriage and the birth of their firstborn, Domenica and Giuseppe did begin the three traditional declarations a month before their wedding.^{[Mar 1752]}

After their marriage, the Giumini couple started their family living with Giuseppe's elder brother Ludovico and the Giovanni and Maria Angela (Pozzi) Marchese family.^{[Cen 1748B]} Their first two children died young and then around 1755 they moved to their own household and had four more children, including a pair of twin boys who died after only 11 days. This was during a period when 10 parishioners (6 of whom were infants) died between November 1758 and March 1759.^{[Cen 1748C, Dth 1758]}

Children Giovanna and Giuseppe were confirmed on June 16 and 17, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giovanna's sponsoring godmother was named as the widow Mrs. Maria Maddalena (Sartori) Giumini³, her aunt by marriage to her late maternal uncle; and Giuseppe's sponsoring godfather was Alessio Pozzi.^{[Con 1761]}

Maria Domenica Giumini died on August 6, 1762, at her home in Giumaglio. She was only 30 years old. Domenica was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1762]}

Giuseppe Antonio Giumini died 16 months later on March 14, 1764, at his home in Giumaglio. He was only a week short of his 32nd birthday. Giuseppe was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1764]}

Children Giovanna and Giuseppe were orphaned at the ages of 8 and 4. Both (but only Giuseppe is legible), then at about the ages of 13 and 9, were enumerated as their own household following that of the widow Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Piezzi) Giovanotti, their mother's first cousin^{[Cen 1769]}

Maria Giuseppa (GIUMINI) CERINI (1743-1763)

144K. Maria Giuseppa Giumini was born on February 25, 1743, in Cevio, Ticino, Switzerland, her mother's hometown, 8 kilometers upriver from Giumaglio.^{[Cen 1748]} She was born right about 9 months after her father's death and only a month after her father's first wife died. Giuseppa lived with her mother in Giumaglio while her elder half-brother and half-sister lived together elsewhere in town.^{[Cen 1748]}

Giuseppa married Giuseppe Maria Cerini, who was 8 years older (he 26 and she 18) and had been previously married with one son. They wed on January 20, 1761. Giuseppe's younger, unmarried brother Giacomo Pietro Cerini lived with them in 1760.^{[Cen 1760]} Giuseppe and Giuseppa had one son:

Husband Giuseppe had previously been married to Giovanna Maria Giovanotti, who died on April 20, 1758, during a period when six parishioners died between February and April 1758.^{[Dth 1758]} She was only 26 years old.

Giuseppa and Giuseppe were married at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta on January 20, 1761, following three customary announcements beginning on Sunday, January 11. The recorded witnesses were the brothers Giovanni and Giacomo Pietro Pozzi.^{[Mar 1761]}

Months after they wed, Giuseppa and 4-year-old stepson Pietro were confirmed on June 16, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760–1764), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giuseppa's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria Teresia (Sartori) Piezzi and Pietro's sponsoring godfather was his maternal uncle Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti.^{[Con 1761]}

Giuseppa was named as the godmother to Giovanni Pietro Cerini, the son of her late elder half-sister Giovanna Maria (Giumini) Cerini's widower, Giovanni Pietro Cerini, in 1761.^{[Bap 1761A]} Later that same year, Giuseppe and Giuseppa chose Giovanni Pietro Cerini as the godfather to their son Giovanni Maria. They named Maria Elena Rusca of Cevio, likely a relative on Giuseppa's maternal side, as his godmother.^{[Bap 1761B]}

Maria Giuseppa (Giumini) Cerini died on January 30, 1763, during a widespread malady that took the lives of 11 parishioners between December 1762 and March 1763. She had just celebrated her second wedding anniversary and was only a month short of her 20th birthday. Giuseppa was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1763]}

Son Giovanni died on Christmas, December 25, 1767, just three weeks after his sixth birthday. He was the first to die during another widespread malady that took the lives of 11 parishioners between December and April 1768. Giovanni was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1767]}

Nothing further is found in parish records on Giuseppe and son Pietro after son Giovanni's death, suggesting the two died before the parish census of 1769 or that they moved to another parish.

Giovanni Ludovico GIUMINI^• (1728-1762)

B226. Giovanni Ludovico "Luigi" Giumini^• was born in March 1728, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Giovanni Marchese, a likely relative on his mother's side, who later became his foster father after his parents' deaths; and (Mrs.) Margherita Gasparini^{[Bap 1728]}. Ludovico was likely named for his paternal uncle, Ludovico Giumini. He married the widow Mrs. Maria Domenica (Gaspari) Pedrotti about October 15, 1747. She was was nearly 6 years Luigi's senior, she 25 years old and he 19. They had four children, only one of whom survived beyond her mother's death but died at the age of 13. Afterward Luigi married Giovanna Giacomina Gasparini^•, the daughter of his godmother, and had two sons, the first of whom died in infancy.^{[Cen 1748A-B]}

Maria Domenica Gaspari was first married to Giovanni Pedrotti on January 29, 1742, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, when she was 19 years old.^{[Mar 1742]} Giovanni is believed to have been the one who died on July 24, 1747, at the age of "about 37 years." Before Domenica he had been married to Maria Catterina Balzari.

Luigi (as "Joanne Aloysius") married Maria Domenica (Gaspari) Pedrotti about October 15, 1747. They were recorded to be related to the third equal and fourth equal degrees of consanguinity (i.e., second and third cousins) and obtained dispensation for the impediment from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. Domenica's mother was a Giumini, but the exact nature of their relationships is not yet confirmed. The recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Marchese, apparently Luigi's foster father, and Giacomo Gaspari, likely Domenica's relative.^{[Mar 1747]}

Ludovico, his family, and brother and Giuseppe were enumerated in 1748 with his foster family, Giovanni and Maria Angela (Pozzi) Marchese.^{[Cen 1748A]} Between 1754 and 1755, separate households for Ludovico's and Giuseppe's families were amended to the parish census,^{[Cen 1748B]} which, in 1760, it is evident that they lived next door to one another.^{[Cen 1760]} Ludovico and Domenica's three younger children were not enumerated, indicating that they all had died before the household was added.^{[Cen 1748B]}

Ludovico ("Luigi"/as "Joannes Aloijsius") was named the godfather of Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti in 1748^{[Bap 1748]} and nephew Giuseppe Giumini, a twin, in 1758.^{[Bap 1758]}

Maria Domenica (Gaspari Pedrotti) Giumini died on November 6, 1755, at home in Giumaglio, at the age of 33 and after only eight year's marriage. She and two other adults all died within a month of each other, suggesting an illness may have swept the town. Domenica was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1755]} Her only child to outlive her was youngest, Catterina, but she died at the age of 13.^{[Dth 1768]}

Three months later, Ludovico remarried to Giacomina Gasparini on February 16, 1756, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Pozzi and Antonio Pozzi.^{[Mar 1756]}

Prior to their marriage, Giacomina was named as godmother to Giovanni Pietro Pedrotti^{[Bap 1754]}, cousin Giovanni Pietro Sartori^{[Bap 1755A]}, and Maria Domenica Pozzi^{[Bap 1755B]}. After their marriage, Giacomina was named as godmother and apparent namesake of Maria Giacomina Piezzi in 1767.^{[Bap 1767]}

Ludovico and Giacomina's first son came three years after their marriage, but little Carlo Francesco died after one day. This came during a period when 10 parishioners, 6 of whom were infants, including Ludovico's nephew and godson Giuseppe Giumini, died from an unspecified malady.^{[Bap 1759, Dth 1759]}

A log entry of 1758 identified "Gio Luigi Giumino" as "vice watchman of the public" (vice camparo public).^{[Medici 42]}

In 1760, only Ludovico, Giacomina, and Catterina were counted in the parish census.^{[Cen 1760]}

Daughter Maria Catterina was confirmed on June 16, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Her sponsoring godmother was named as Maria Cerini.^{[Con 1761]}

Giovanni Ludovico/Luigi Giumini died on May 4, 1762, at his home in Giumaglio, and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Ludovico was only 34 years old.^{[Dth 1762]}

Daughter Catterina and son Carlo survived Ludovico, but Catterina died five years later following an illness of about five days. She was also buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1768]} Catterina was only 13 years old.

Giacomina was named as sponsoring godmother to Maria Giacomina Pedrotti when Giambattista Mugiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver.^{[Con 1769]}

Giacomina's mother died on October 20, 1771, and two weeks later Giacomina followed.

Giovanna Giacomina (Gasparini) Giumini died on November 4, 1771, at her home in Giumaglio, apparently following a week-long illness. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Giacomina was only 37 years old.^{[Dth 1771]}

Son Carlo was orphaned at the age of 10 and was the only child to survive to adulthood, marriage, and parenthood. Who took care of him afterward is not certain, but records that follow suggest he may have been taken care of by his maternal relations in the Gasparini family.

Carlo was confirmed on July 30, 1769, when Giambattista Mugiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), held confirmation ceremonies at at least four parishes in the valley. Carlo was confirmed at the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Cevio, about 8 kilometers upriver. His sponsoring godfather was named as Giacomo Re of Cevio.^{[Con 1769]} Carlo's confirmation was recorded following two children of Giacomo Pietro Gasparini, Carlo's maternal uncle.

In 1776, at about the age of 14, Carlo was counted alone but enumerated following the household of Giovanni Pietro Pedrotti^{[Cen 1776]}, his cousin through their Gasparini mothers.

Giuseppe Antonio GIUMINI (1732-1764)

B227. Giuseppe Antonio Giumini was born around March 25, 1732, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His father died when he was only four months old. He married cousin Maria Domenica Giumini, the daughter of Giovanni Giacomo Giumini (II)² (relationship between the two as yet unknown). Brothers Ludovico and Giuseppe were first enumerated in 1748 with their foster family, Giovanni and Maria Angela (Pozzi) Marchese.^{[Cen 1748A]}

Giuseppe and Domenica married on February 9, 1752, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. They were recorded to be related to the third and fourth degrees of consanguinity (perhaps second cousins, once removed) and obtained dispensation from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Pozzi, Carlo Antonio Marchese, and Domenica's cousin Giacomo Pietro Piezzi. Despite the very close, nine-month time between their marriage and the birth of their firstborn, Giuseppe and Domenica did begin the three traditional declarations a month before their wedding.^{[Mar 1752]}

After their marriage, the Giumini couple started their family living with Giuseppe's elder brother Ludovico and the Giovanni and Maria Angela (Pozzi) Marchese family.^{[Cen 1748A]} Their first two children died young and then around 1755 they moved to their own household and had four more children, including a pair of twin boys who died after only 11 days. This was during a period when 10 parishioners (6 of whom were infants) died between November 1758 and March 1759.^{[Cen 1748, Dth 1758]}

Giuseppe was named as the godfather of Giacomo Maria Gaspari in 1756.^{[Bap 1756]}

Children Giovanna and Giuseppe were confirmed on June 16 and 17, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giovanna's sponsoring godmother was named as the widow Mrs. Maria Maddalena (Sartori) Giumini³, her aunt by marriage to her late maternal uncle; and Giuseppe's sponsoring godfather was Alessio Pozzi.^{[Con 1761]}

Maria Domenica Giumini died on August 6, 1762, at her home in Giumaglio. She was only 30 years old. Domenica was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1762]}

Giuseppe Antonio Giumini died 16 months later on March 14, 1764, at his home in Giumaglio. He was only a week short of his 32nd birthday. Giuseppe was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1764]}

Children Giovanna and Giuseppe were orphaned at the ages of 8 and 4. Both (but only Giuseppe is legible), then at about the ages of 13 and 9, were enumerated as their own household following that of the widow Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Piezzi) Giovanotti, their mother's first cousin^{[Cen 1769]}
