Giovanna (SARTORI) DEL NOTARO (1693->1716)

12C. Giovanna Sartori was born on October 7, 1693, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. Her godparents were named as Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari and Mrs. Lucia (Molinari/Bonetti) Cantoni.^{[Bap 1693]} As a child she was recorded as "Maria Magdalena," the name of an elder sister who died in infancy, over three parish censuses.^{[Cen 1698-1703]} Giovanna married Giovanni Antonio Delnotaro, of the neighboring village of Coglio, on February 6, 1714,^{[Mar 1714]} and had at least one son:^{[Bap 1716]}

Prior to her marriage, Giovanna Sartori was named as the godmother to Giovanni Francesco Pozzi^{[Bap 1712]}, Giovanna Maria Giumini^{[Bap 1713A]}, and Domenica Teresa Giumini.^{[Bap 1713B]}

Giovanna and Antonio wed on February 6, 1714, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Giovanni Angelo Pozzi.^{[Mar 1714]}

Son Pietro was baptized in Giumaglio but Giovanna and Antonio were said to be "of Coglio" and likely resided there at the time. Giovanna and Antonio chose Fedele Caneverini and Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Guglielmetti of Coglio as godparents for Pietro. Pietro's baptism record was the last mention of the family in the parish records of Giumaglio.^{[Bap 1716]}

Giacomo Pietro SARTORI (1695-1732)

12D. Giacomo Pietro "Pietro" Sartori was born on July 26, 1695, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He was baptized as "Petrus Jacobus," but afterward was recorded consistently as either "Jacobus Petrus" or "Petrus." His godparents were named as Giovanni Angelo Pozzi and Giacomina Pozzi.^{[Bap 1695]} Pietro married Giacomina Lafranchi, of the neighboring village of Coglio, on May 27, 1726. They had one daughter before Pietro's death:

Pietro and Giacomina wed on Monday, May 27, 1726, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, following the traditional declarations at both the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Maria Carmela, in Coglio, on three successive Sundays. Recorded witnesses were Felice Lesina and Notary (Giovanni) Giumini.^{[Mar 1726]}

Pietro was likely named as godfather (as "Jacobus, son of Joannis Petri") to Maria Giacomina Ianzini^{[Bap 1724]}; (as "Joannes Petrus, son of Petri") to Maria Domenica Adami^{[Bap 1726]}; and (as "Joannes Petrus") to Maria Domenica Lafranchi, Giacomina's niece.^{[Bap 1726B]}

Pietro and Giacomina chose Giovanni Giacomo Gasparini and Mrs. Giacomina Sartori, Giacomo Pietro's brother-in-law and sister-in-law, as godparents for Teresa.^{[Bap 1731]}

Giacomo Pietro Sartori died suddenly on August 30, 1732, from an unspecified cause. He was recorded to be "about 35 years" old, but may have been a year or two older. Pietro was buried in cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1732]}

After Pietro

A year and a half after Pietro's death, Giacomina remarried to Giovanni Marchese at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The traditional three declarations were made on three consecutive Sundays, the January 10, 17, and 24, 1734. The date of the marriage was omitted, but may have been the following Sunday, 31 January. Recorded witnesses were Maria Marchese and Antonio Lafranchi of Coglo.^{[Mar 1734]} Giovanni had previously been married to Maria Rossetti, but they had no children.

Giacomina (Lafranchi Sartori) Marchese died before 1741 and afterward daughter Teresa, orphaned by the age of 10, lived with her paternal grandfather, uncles, and godmother.^{[Cen 1741]}

After Giacomina's death, Giovanni took in three orphaned sons of Don Giovanni Giumini and his wife Giovanna Maria Marchese, an as yet unknown relative of Giovanni's, by 1741^{[Cen 1741]} Don Giumini also appears to have been the first cousin of Giovanni's first wife, Maria Rossetti.

Giovanni remarried to Maria Angela Pozzi on April 11, 1741, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Mar 1741]} She was 21 years old and he 45.

Giovanni Marchese died on November 25, 1763, at his home in Giumaglio. His was 68 years old.

Giovanni SARTORI (1698-1754)

12F. Giovanni Sartori was born and baptized on May 12, 1698, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Giovanni Antonio Cantoni and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Caneverini of the neighboring village of Coglio.^{[Bap 1698]}l Giovanni was married four times.^{[Cen 1760]} His first wife is so far unknown, but his likely second wife was named Giacomina, whom he married as early as 1728.^{[Bap 1728B]} Giacomina apparently died in the early 1740s. His second marriage may have been to Margherita Franzina of Cerentino, 19 kilometers upriver and along the Rovana di Campo. She died in 1747. Giovanni's third marriage was to Maria Domenica Piezzi, on December 2, 1747. They had one son together, who died three months later, and then Domenica died another four months after that at the age of 26.^{[Dth 1749A/B]} Giovanni's fourth marriage was to Guglielma Giacometti of Moghegno, about 6 kilometers downriver. They are not known to have had any children.

Giovanni was named as godfather of nephew Giacomo Pietro Gasparini in 1728, as likely was his wife, Giacomina.^{[Bap 1728B]} He was also named as godfather to Maria Catterina Pozzi^{[Bap 1728A]}; Giuseppe Antonio Pozzi^{[Bap 1733]}; Pietro Antonio Giovanotti^{[Bap 1734B]}; and nephew, Giovanni Giacomo Giumini⁴.^{[Bap 1740]}

Giacomina was also named as godmother to Maria Adami^{[Bap 1728C]}; Giovanni's niece Maria Teresa Margarita Sartori^{[Bap 1731]}; and as godmother and likely namesake for Giovanni's niece, Giovanna Giacomina Gasparini.^{[Bap 1734A]}

Giovanni and Giacomina lived with Giovanni's father through 1741, as did Giovanni's younger brother Giuseppe, his bride, and their orphaned niece and goddaughter Maria Teresa Sartori.^{[Cen 1741]}

Giacomina Sartori died between 1741 and 1746.^{[Cen 1741,1748]}

Margherita Franzina died on April 22, 1747, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be "about 28 years" old and the wife of "Joannis Sartori di Moretti." Margherita was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1747]}

Giovanni married Maria Domenica Piezzi on December 2, 1747, in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, seven months after the death of Margherita. Giovanni and Domenica were reported to have been related through the second degree of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood) and obtain dispensation for that and forgoing the traditional three marriage declarations from the Bishop of Como.^{[Mar 1747]} The relationship by affinity is not yet apparent, perhaps it was through Giovanni's first wife Giacomina.

Maria Domenica (Piezzi) Sartori died on December 28, 1749, just weeks after her second anniversary. She was the first in a string of four deaths in the parish between December and January 1750, including Giovanni's sister-in-law, Maria Margherita (Adami) Sartori, who died the same day. Domenica was only 26 years old. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1749B]}

Giovanni Sartori died on September 26, 1754, at his home in Giumaglio. He was 56 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1754]}

After Giovanni's death, Gugelielma remarried to Giuseppe Peter of Avegno, about 11 kilometers downriver, 6 kilometers below her hometown of Moghegno.^{[Cen 1760]} They wed at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta on May 14, 1761, and the recorded witnesses were Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi, Pastor of the neighboring parish of Coglio, and his brother Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi, Notary of Giumaglio.^{[Mar 1761]}

Maria Margherita (SARTORI) GASPARINI^• (1708-1771)

12H. Maria Margherita Sartori^• was born and baptized on June 8, 1708, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Jr.) and Mrs. Maria (Gasparini) Pozzi, the aunt of her future husband, Giovanni Giacomo Gasparini^•. She and Giacomo married on February 24, 1727, and had 10 children, including a pair of fraternal twins:

Margherita and Giacomo were wed on February 24, 1727, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the third degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins) from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. (The nature of their relationship is not yet known.) Recorded witnesses were Bernardo Lesina and Pietro Sartori, presumably Margherita's father.^{[Mar 1727]}

Margherita and Giacomo chose the following godparents for their children:

1. Giacomo Pietro (elder): Giovanni Sartori, Margherita's elder brother, and Giacomina Sartori, perhaps Giovanni's wife^{[Bap 1728]};

Margherita was named as the godmother to Giovanni Ludovico Giumini^{[Bap 1728A]}, who went on to marry her daughter Giacomina; and Carlo Antonio Pozzi, who died in infancy, in 1731.^{[Bap 1731]}

Daughter Domenica, then was 4 years old, was confirmed on May 23, 1747, by Agostino Neuroni, Bishop of Como (1746-1760), who may have visited the valley. Unlike previous visits by the bishop, which were major events, only two children were recorded in the parish records of Giumaglio. Domenica's sponsoring godmother was named as Maria Angela Lucchini of Valle Onsernone, who went on to marry Giovanni Francesco Pozzi.^{[Con 1747]}

Giovanni Giacomo Gasparini died on November 30, 1755, at his home in Giumaglio, following an apparently acute illness that necessitated all his last rites be given on the 28th. In fact, he and two other adults all died within a month of each other. One of the others was Maria Domenica Gaspari, the wife of Giovanni Ludovico Giumini and godmother to daughter Domenica. Giacomo's daughter Giacomina would later marry Ludovico. Giacomo was buried on December 1 in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1755]} He was 50 years old.

Margherita was left with five surviving children, ages 7 through 23, at home, her eldest daughter having already married.

Tragedy struck in 1758 when eldest daughter Teresia and her husband Giovanni Pietro Pedrotti both died during a malady that took the lives of six parishioners between February and April and left their 3-year-old and 1-year-old orphaned. Their two children were enumerated together in the parish censuses of 1760 and 1769 immediately following the household of Margherita, her son (their uncle) Giacomo Pietro and his family, and Margherita's youngest daughter (their aunt) Catterina.^{[Dth 1758, Cen 1760. 1769]}

Youngest daughter Maria Catterina and orphaned 6-year-old grandson Giovanni Pietro Pedrotti were confirmed on June 16, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Catterina's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria Teresia (Sartori) Piezzi, Margherita's niece; and Pietro's sponsoring godfather was named his maternal uncle Pietro Gasparini.^{[Con 1761]}

Five years after the previous series of tragedies, another widespread malady took the lives of 11 parishioners between December 1762 and March 1763 and claimed 19-year-old daughter Domenica, her 2-year-old daughter Elisabetta Cerini, and youngest 14-year-old daughter Catterina.^{[Dth 1763A/B]}

Maria Margherita (Sartori) Gasparini died on October 20, 1771, at her home in Giumaglio, apparently following a week-long illness. She was buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Margherita was 63 years old.^{[Dth 1771A]}

Two weeks after Margherita's death, daughter Giacomina (Gasparini) Giumini died at the age of 37. She was also buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1771B]}

Maria Maddalena (SARTORI) GIUMINI³ (1716-<1795)

12I. Maria Maddalena Sartori³ was born on the night of January 19, 1716, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was baptized the following day and her godparents were named as Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of the neighboring town of Coglio and Maria Marta Giumini of Giumaglio. Maddalena married Giacomo Pietro "Pietro" Giumini³ before 1740 and had one son:

Pietro and Maddalena named Maddalena's brother, Giovanni Sartori, and Maria Piezzi, likely one of Pietro's maternal aunts, as Giacomo's godparents.^{[Bap 1740]}

Maddalena was named as godmother to nephew Giacomo Pietro Sartori in 1732^{[Bap 1732]} and two baby girls named Giovanna Maria Marchese in 1737. The first was the daughter of Giovanni Pietro Marchese and the second the daughter of Carlo Marchese, the elder brother of Giovanni Pietro.^{[Bap 1737A,B]} Years later she was named as godmother to Giovanni Francesco Piezzi, Pietro's maternal cousin, in 1748,^{[Bap 1748]} and as godmother and apparent namesake to niece Maria Maddalena Sartori in 1752.^{[Bap 1752]}

Pietro was named as godfather to Giuseppe Antonio Giumini in 1732^{[Bap 1732]} and to Maddalena's niece, Maria Catterina Gasparini, in 1744.^{[Bap 1744]}

Giacomo Pietro Giumini died on December 6, 1751, at his home in Giumaglio, following an apparently abrupt illness that necessitated all his last rites be administered on the 5th. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Pietro was only 41 years old.^{[Dth 1751]}

Maddalena and her 11-year-old son carried on after her Pietro's death. Later, son Giacomo and his young family lived with her through at least 1776.^{[Cen 1760-1776]}

Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760–1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley on June 16, 1761, at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Maddalena was named as godmother at the confirmation of her late husband's 5-year-old niece, Giovanna Maria Giumini, and her grandniece Maria Anna Piezzi.^{[Con 1761]}

Maria Maddalena (Sartori) Giumini likely died between 1776 and 1795^{[Cen 1795]}, perhaps between 1785 and 1795 when incomplete parish records were back entered. She was likely in her 70s.

Giovanna Maria SARTORI (1720-1736)

12K. Giovanna Maria Sartori was born and baptized on July 3, 1720, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Carlo Marchese, likely her maternal uncle, and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Giumini) Lesina.^{[Bap 1720]}

Giovanna Maria Sartori likely died on October 21, 1736, in Giumaglio, at the age of 16 years. Her father's name was not recorded, hence the uncertainty.^{[Dth 1736]}

Giovanni Giuseppe Maria SARTORI^• (1723-1775)

12L. Giovanni Giuseppe Maria Sartori^• was born on the night of November 7, 1723, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. His godparents were named as Giovanni Delnotaro of the neighboring village of Coglio and Mrs. Giacomina (Tognini) Marchese, the wife of Carlo Marchese, whose relationship to Giuseppe's mother is as yet unknown.^{[Bap 1723]}

Giuseppe married Maria Margherita Adami in April 1739 and both were quite young, he was 15 and she was 16. Margherita died ten years later at the age of 26.^{[Dth 1749]} They appear to not have had any children. Giuseppe afterward remarried to Maria Catterina Jorio^• of Brontallo, Val Lavizzara, 14 kilometers upriver. She was seven years younger than Giuseppe. They had at least eight children, but only three survived to adulthood:

Giuseppe and Margherita married in mid-April 1739 at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. They obtained dispensation for the impediment of the third degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins) from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne, which apparently traces back to their shared great-grandfather, Giovanni Pozzi¹. Recorded witnesses were Pietro Sartori, presumably Giuseppe's father, and Giovanni Sartori, Giuseppe's elder half-brother.^{[Mar 1739]}

In 1741, Giuseppe and Margherita lived with Giuseppe's father, as did Giuseppe's elder brother Giovanni and his wife.^{[Cen 1741]}

Giuseppe was named as godfather to Maria Domenica Marchese in 1739.^{[Bap 1739]} He was also a recorded witness to the marriage of his niece Maria Domenica Gasparini to Antonio Cerini^{5 [Mar 1759]}

Margherita was named as godmother to Giovanni Antonio Marchese in 1740^{[Bap 1740A]} and a couple weeks later to Giuseppe's niece, Maria Margherita Gasparini.^{[Bap 1740B]} Four years later, she was named as godmother to her niece Maria Domenica Pozzi, the daughter of Notary Don Rodolfo Pozzi and her younger sister Maria Domenica (Adami) Pozzi, in 1745.^{[Bap 1745A]} Two months later she was named as godmother to Giovanni Antonio Pozzi, son Antonio and Domenica (De Bernardi) Pozzi.^{[Bap 1745B]}

Maria Margherita (Adami) Sartori died on December 28, 1749, during a string of maladies that took the lives of four adults between December 1749 and January 1750, including Giuseppe's sister-in-law, Maria Domenica (Piezzi) Sartori, who died the same day. Giuseppe remarried to Maria Catterina Jorio on March 30, 1750, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, only three months after Margherita's death. They obtained dispensation from the Bishop of Como to forgo the traditional three declarations. Recorded witnesses were Antonio Pozzi and Giovanni Bondietti of Aurigeno, about 5 kilometers downriver.^{[Dth 1749]}. The godparents of their children were:

8. Giovanna Maria: Giovanni Bartolomeo Marchese, husband of Catterina's elder sister Maria, and Giovanna Maria (Jorio) Lesina, Catterina's elder sister.^{[Bap 1767]}

Children Maddalena, Pietro, Caterina, and Giacomo were confirmed on June 16, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760–1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. • Pietro: Giovanni Bartolomeo Marchese, his uncle by marriage to his paternal aunt;
• Caterina: Mrs. Maria Teresa (Sartori) Piezzi, her first cousin; and
• Giacomo: Giuseppe Lafranchi of the neighboring village of Coglio.

Daughter Anna Maria was born 13 days later.^{[Bap 1761]}

Eldest daughter Maddalena died at the age of 11 following an unspecified accident in March 1764.^{[Dth 1764]} Three years later, youngest Giovanna died at the age of 8 months during a widespread malady that took the lives of 11 parishioners between December 1767 and April 1768.^{[Dth 1768]} Both were buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

Eight years after the Bishop of Como came through and held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley, his successor, Giambattista Muggiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), did the same. He confirmed youngest children Anna Maria and Giuseppe Maria at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on July 29, 1769. Their sponsoring godparents were named as Catterina's sister, Mrs. Giovanna Maria Jorio, widow of the late Carlo Antonio Lesina, and Giuseppe Lesina, son of the late Carlo Antonio Lesina.^{[Con 1769]}

Illnesses during the fall of 1774 and spring of 1775 took two more children. Daughter Anna Maria died at the age of 13 on October 31, 1774, at home in Giumaglio, apparently following an illness of several days and during a time when the parish pastor was also ill and the pastor of the neighboring parish of Coglio was called to give her the Eucharist and annointment. Anna Maria was buried the day after her death in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1774]} Youngest son Giuseppe died just two days shy of his 11th birthday on March 23, 1775, at home and apparently following an illness of over a week. He was buried the day after his death in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1775A]}

Giovanni Giuseppe Sartori died on May 17, 1775, at his late father's home in Giumaglio, apparently following an illness of several days. He was 51 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1775B]}

Maria Catterina (Jorio) Sartori died 27 years later on December 7, 1802, at their home in Giumaglio. She was 72 years old and buried the following day in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1802]}
