TOGNINI (COIRATA) Family History, Part I
What little I have found on the early Tognini/Coirata family of Someo is predominately based on parish records from Giumaglio, 2 kilometers downriver from Someo. "La famiglie valmaggesi nel 1808" (Pro Valle Maggia, 1970) records the Tognini name as associated with Someo but since extinct. It also associates Coirata, also extinct, with the villages of Sant Antonio and San Carlo in Val di Peccia, 22 kilometers upriver from Someo. Curiously, the name of Coirata has not been found in the parish records of Someo.
The early Tognini/Coirata families found in Giumaglio parish records are:
Domenico TOGNINI (Sr.)1 (<1647-~1695)
1. Domenico Tognini (Sr.)1 of Someo, Ticino canton, Switzerland, is so far is primarily known through the marriage record of daughter Domenica2, who married in the parish of Giumaglio, 2 kilometers downriver. Domenica may have had two brothers, as suggested by the baptism records of her youngest son, which give a possible family of:
11. | Domenica Tognini2 | (1658-1661) | (6) Jun 1725 | (64) |
12. | Giovanna Tognini | (1660-1661) | 23 Jan 1730 | (69) |
13. | Domenico Tognini (Jr.) | (1668) | (28 Dec 1736) | (68) |
14. | Giovanni Tognini | (1676) | 20 Dec 1741 | (65) |
15. | Carlo Tognini | (15 Sep 1672) | (> 1704) | (> 31) |
The earliest record of Domenico may be the baptism of his likely son Carlo, who was baptized in Giumaglio. In that record Carlo's parents were named as Domenico Coirata and Benevenuta Poma of Someo, and his godparents were Alessandro Muscio and Mrs. Caterina (Perinoni) Pozzi.[Bap 1672]
Another parish record from Giumaglio, the marriage of daughter Domenica, names her as the daughter of Dominici Tognini of Someo.[Mar 1685] Afterward, the baptism records of all Domenica's children in Giumaglio name her as a "Coirata," and two parish censuses name her as a "Coiranta."[Cen 1698,1702] Curiously, the baptism record of Domenica's youngest son Domenico, identified Domenica as a Coirata yet the godparents she named for little Domenico were Carlo Tognini and Giacomina, wife of Domenico Tognini (Jr.), both of Someo.[Bap 1701]
- Domenico Tognini (Jr.) married thrice-related third cousin Giacomina Guerra, daughter of Antonio.[Mar 1696]
- Carlo Tognini married third cousin Elena Jorio, daughter of the late Giovanni.[Mar 1700]
- Giovanni Tognini married third cousin Giacoma Tognini, daughter of the late Bernardo.[Mar 1704]
Domenico Tognini likely died between 1695 and 1696, after a marriage that son Carlo witnessed[Mar 1695] and before the marriage of son Domenico (Jr.).[Mar 1696]

Giovanni COIRATA (<1621->1673)
X. Giovanni Coirata of Someo may have had three daughters who married three Bonetti men in Giumaglio. Any relationship of Giovanni to Domenico1 is purely speculative:
(X1) | Antonia Coirata | (1634-1635) | 30 Apr 1698 | (63) |
X2. | Maria Coirata | (1645) | (> 1703) | (> 52) |
XX. | Giacomina Coirata | -- | (> 1677) | -- |
Giacomina and Maria were both named as daughters of Giovanni Coirata in baptism records of their children.[Bap 1671A,B] Antonia's father was similarly named once, however, in that record she was inexplicably identified as the daughter of Giovanni Parini (Parinoni?).[Bap 1669]
Giovanni Coirata likely lived beyond 1673 as in all records he was not noted as deceased.[Bap 1669-1673]

Antonia (COIRATA) BONETTI (~1635-1698)
X1. Antonia Coirata was born about 1634 or 1635, probably in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. She married Giovanni Bonetti and had as many as six children, including a pair of twin daughters. Giovanni's eldest daughter Domenica may have been from a previous marriage:
-- | Domenica Bonetti | (< 1667) | (> 1677) | -- |
X1 | Giacomina Bonetti | (1666-1667) | 3 Mar 1671 | (4) |
X2 | Giovanetta Bonetti | (1666) | 5 Jun 1724 | (55) |
X3 | Giovanni Pietro Bonetti (Sr.) | 1 Jun 1669 | 12 Aug 1734 | (65) |
X4 | Margherita Bonetti | 22 Sep 1672 | 20 Oct 1672 | (28 days) |
X5 | Maria Bonetti | 22 Sep 1672 | (> 1708) | (> 35) |
X6 | Antonio Ludovico Bonetti | 24 Aug 1678 | (> 1703) | (> 26) |
Antonia and Giovanni chose the following godparents for their children:
- Domenica, Giacomina, and Giovanetta: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
- Pietro: Pietro Bonetti and Mrs. Domenica (Lesina) Bonetti[Bap 1669];
- Margherita: Giovanni Eusebio (Lesina) and likely namesake Maria Margherita Pozzi[Bap 1672A];
- Maria: Antonio Bonetti and Maria Ferari[Bap 1672B], wife of Pietro Bonetti, above; and
- Antonio Ludovico: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Rossini) Marca.[Bap 1678]
Interestingly, Antonia was once identified as the daughter of Giovanni Parini of Someo in the baptism record of son Pietro.[Bap 1669] This was the only mention of her father, but if it were to refer to Giovanni Coirata it may indicate that she was a sister to Maria and Giacomina Coirata, all three of whom married Bonetti men.
During the last week of May 1677, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Son Giovanni Pietro was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time his godfather was named as Giacomo Ianzi.[Con 1677A] Antonia and two daughters (less Giovanetta) were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time the following sponsoring godparents were named: Antonia's was Margherita Rocchini of Someo; Domenica's was Maria Cerini; and Maria's was Mrs. Domenica (Bonetti) Lesina.[Con 1677B] Domenica had previously been named as godmother to Giovanna Cristina Bonetti in Maggia.[Con 1677A]
Giovanni Bonetti died suddenly on October 1, 1683, in a fall from a tree or stake (rogo) in Dorca, in the mountains above Giumaglio. He was about 47 years old and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1683]
Antonia was widowed at about the age of 49 and had four or five children between the ages of 5 and 17. Come the first parish census of 1692, Antonia was listed with her son Pietro, age 22, as the head of household and children Maria and Antonio Ludovico. Daughter Giovanetta had married 5 years earlier.[Cen 1692]
Son Pietro married and Antonia, Maria, and Antonio Ludovico continued to live together until Antonia's death in 1698, however, Antonio Ludovico was marked as absent that year, suggesting he may have been working some distance from Giumaglio. Their household was enumerated following those of Antonio and Maria (Cerini) Bonetti and Antonia's likely widowed sister Maria (Coirata) Bonetti.[Cen 1698]
Antonia (Coirata) Bonetti died on April 30, 1698, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was buried the same day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1698] She was 63 years old.[Cen 1698]
Some five years after Antonia's death, her likely widowed sister Maria (Coirata) Bonetti was counted as a household unto herself, but was noted to be living at the residence of Antonia's son Giovanni Pietro Bonetti.[Cen 1703]

Maria (COIRATA) BONETTI (~1645->1703)
X2. Maria Coirata was born about 1645, probably in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. She married Antonio Bonetti and had at least three sons, none of whom outlived her:
(X21) | Carlo Antonio Bonetti | (1667) | 23 Feb 1677 | (10) |
X22. | Giovanni Maria Bonetti | 14 Aug 1671 | 8 Dec 1699 | (28) |
X23. | Carlo Domenico Bonetti | 24 Oct 1673 | 3 May 1684 | (10) |
Maria and Antonio chose the following godparents for their children:
- Carlo Antonio: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
- Giovanna Maria: Giovanni Mirenini of Giumaglio and Mrs. Maria (Ferari) Bonetti[Bap 1671]; and
- Carlo Domenico: Giovanni Ianzi and Mrs. Giovanna (Bonetti) Cerini.[Bap 1671]
First son Carlo Antonio is only know from his death record in which he was only identified as the son of Antonio. He died at home on February 23, 1677, at the age of 10 and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1677]
The Bonetti family was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time Maria's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Giovanna (Betanta) Delnotaro of Coglio; Giovanni Maria's godfather was Francesco Pozzi of Giumaglio; and Carlo Domenico's was Giovanni Guglielmetti of Coglio.[Con 1677]
Antonio Bonetti died between 1684 (the death of youngest son Carlo Domenico) and 1698 when Maria was first recorded in the parish census. In that year Maria, age 53, was living with her only surviving son Giovanni. Their household was enumerated between that of Antonio and Maria (Cerini) Bonetti and her likely widowed sister Antonia (Coirata) Bonetti.[Cen 1698]
Come 1702, Maria was enumerated by herself[Cen 1702], but by the following year, while stilll counted as a household unto herself, she was noted to be living at the residence of apparent nephew Giovanni Pietro Bonetti.[Cen 1703]
Maria (Coirata) Bonetti's death record was not found, nor any other records beyond the 1703 parish census in which she was said to be 52 years old.[Cen 1703]

Giacomina (COIRATA) BONETTI (~1651->1677)
XX. Giacomina Coirata was born about 1645, probably in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. She married Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti and had as many as six children:
XX1. | Anna Maria Bonetti | (1660-1661) | (22 Apr 1696) | (35) |
XX2. | Giovanna Bonetti | 25 Jun 1668 | -- | -- |
XX3. | Catterina Bonetti | 17 Aug 1671 | 31 Aug 1671 | (14 days) |
XX4. | Maria Maddalena Bonetti | 1 Feb 1673 | 8 Nov 1676 | (3) |
XX5. | Catterina Bonetti | (1674-1676) | -- | -- |
XX6. | Carlo Antonio Bonetti | 27 Jan 1677 | -- | -- |
Giacomina and Giacomo chose the following godparents for their children:
- Anna Maria: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
- Giovanna: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi and Catterina Pozzi[Bap 1668];
- Catterina: Giovanni Antonio Cerini2 and Maria Ianzini[Bap 1671];
- Maddalena: Giovanni Tognini and Giovanni Calieri[Bap 1673], both of Someo;
- Catterina: no baptism record found in Giumaglio; and
- Carlo Antonio: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi and Domenica Ianzi[Bap 1677];
The Bonetti family was confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time their children were assigned the following godparents: Anna Maria's was Giovanna Tognazzini of Someo; Catterina's was the widow Giacomina (Stolfi) Rusca (Giovanotti) of Giumaglio; and Carlo Antonio's was Don Giovanni Battista Franzoni of Cevio.[Con 1677] Giacomina and Giacomo do not appear to have been confirmed.
Only one record exists of this Bonetti family beyond 1677 and that is of the death of Anna Maria Bonetti (no father or husband named) on April 22, 1696, at her home in Giumaglio. She was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1696]
