CERINI Family History, Part IV

Domenica Caterina (CERINI) ROSSETTI (1711-1753)

1172. Domenica Caterina Cerini was born on May 9, 1711, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. Her godparents were named as Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Mrs. Giacomina (Adami) Giovanotti.^{[Bap 1711]} She was later recorded several times as "Maria Caterina" and likely went by "Caterina." She married Pietro Antonio Marca on April 23, 1743. She was 31 years old and Pietro, twice a widower, was 68 years old. Pietro died the following year. Afterward Caterina remarried to another double widower, Giovanni Antonio Rossetti^{[Mar 1745, Cen 1748]}, around 1750. He was 20 years her senior and they had one daughter together during their brief three-year marriage:

Pietro had been married twice before. His first marriage was in 1691 to Giovanna Cerini^{[Cen 1692]}, whose relationship to Caterina is not yet known but likely accounts for one of the relationships of affinity recorded. They had four or five children, but only one is believed to have lived to adulthood and was about the same age as Caterina. Giovanna died on October 11 or 21, 1726, at around the age of 60.^{[Dth 1726]} After Giovanna's death he remarried to Maria L. (possibly Lesina or perhaps Leoni) of Moghegno, about 6 kilometers downriver, in 1731. A recorded witness to their marriage was Domenico Piezzi^{[Mar 1731]}, who married daughter Maria around the same time or soon afterward. Wife Maria died 11 years later on January 11, 1743, at about the age of 50.^{[Dth 1743]} Three months afterward Pietro married Caterina.

Caterina and Pietro were married at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta on April 23, 1743. They were found to be related through affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood) to the second and third degrees, one of which likely accounts for a relationship between Pietro's first wife and Caterina. They obtained dispensation from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Mazzini and Caterina's father, Antonio Cerini².^{[Mar 1743]}

Pietro Antonio Marca died on March or May 3, 1744, either a month short of or a week after their first wedding anniversary. He was reported to be "about 70 years" old, but was 69. Pietro and his two previous wives were all buried at the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1744]}

Caterina was recorded in 1748 as having been widowed and living alone.^{[Cen 1748A]}

Antonio Rossetti had also been married and widowed twice before. His first marriage was to Margherita Mazzini. She died between 1741 and 1745 in her early 50s.^{[Cen 1741]} Antonio's second marriage was to Giovanna Maria Piezzi on June 30, 1745. She was 21 years younger. She died three years later on January 15, 1750, a month shy of her 38th birthday.^{[Dth 1750]}

It was likely later in 1750 that Caterina and Antonio wed--she was about 39 years old and he about 59 years old. The birth of daughter Antonia followed the next year.^{[Cen 1748B]} Caterina and Antonio named Giovanni Guglielmetti, of the neighboring town of Coglio, and Mrs. Giacomina (Ianzini) Pozzi as their daughter's godparents.^{[Bap 1751]}

Giovanni Antonio Rossetti died on August 23, 1753, at their home in Giumaglio, following an illness of about three weeks. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1753A]} Antonio was 62 years old.

Domenica Caterina (Cerini Marchese) Rossetti died two months later on November 17, 1753, at her home in Giumaglio. An apparent string of maladies took six parishioners that year between July and October, one other adult besides Antonio and three children. Caterina was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She as recorded to be the age of 39^{[Dth 1753B]}, however, she was 42 years old.

Giovanna Antonia was orphaned at the age of 2 and by 1760 was enumerated with the Giovanni Bartolomeo and Maria (Jorio) Marchese family.^{[Cen 1760]}

Giovanni Antonio CERINI (IV)⁴ (1712-1758)

1173. Giovanni Antonio Cerini (IV)⁴ was born on October 29, 1712, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. His godparents were named as Benedetto Pozzi, his likely maternal uncle, and Giacomina Cerini. Antonio married Maria Elisabetta (Ferari) Sartori² from the neighboring village of Coglio. She was about five years Antonio's senior^{[Cen 1741]} and was the widow of Antonio Sartori. They had at least four children before Elisabetta's early death in 1744. Afterward, Antonio remarried to the widow Giacomina (Tognini) Marchese, a native of Someo, two kilometers upriver from Giumaglio. She had at least four children, including a pair of fraternal twins, but all but one likely died before their marriage:

Elisabetta had one daughter from her marriage to Antonio Sartori, but she may not have survived to the time of Elisabetta's marriage to Antonio Cerini.

Antonio and Elisabetta married on September 19, 1736, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and obtained dispensation to forgo the traditional three marriage declarations beforehand, apparently because Elisabetta was already pregnant with their first son, who arrived four months later. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Antonio and Domenica Pozzi, Elisabetta's brother-in-law and sister.^{[Mar 1736]}

Antonio, Elisabetta, and their two young children lived with Antonio's parents and two younger sisters in 1741.^{[Cen 1741]} Youngest daughter Giovanna came later, but apparently died young and was not counted in the parish census of 1748.^{[Cen 1748]}

Antonio and Elisabetta chose the following godparents for their children:

1. Antonio (elder): Giovanni Pietro Cerini and Giovanna Maria Gasparini (Pozzi)
2. Antonio⁴ (younger): Francesco Pozzi, Elisabetta's nephew, and Giacomina Pozzi (Pedrotti)^{[Bap 1738]}, Antonio's cousin;
3. Maria: Giovanni Bartolomeo Marchese and Giovanna Maria Cerini (Piezzi), apparently her aunt^{[Bap 1740]}; and
4. Giovanna: Domenico Piezzi (husband of paternal aunt Giovanna (Cerini) Piezzi) and Domenica Pozzi (sister of Francesco).^{[Bap 1744]}

Antonio was named as godfather to Pietro Pedrotti, the son of Giacomina (Pozzi) Pedrotti who later became godmother to Antonio's son Antonio⁴.^{[Bap 1736]}

Maria Elisabetta Cerini died at the family home in Giumaglio on May 11, 1744, just two months after the birth of daughter Giovanna. She was buried the following day at the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1744A]} Elisabetta was in her late 30s.

Four months after Elisabetta's passing, Antonio's father died at the of about 63.^{[Dth 1744B]}

A year after Elisabetta's death, Antonio remarried to Giacomina (Tognini) Marchese in September 1745 at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Mar 1745]} She was the daughter of Mattia/Matteo Tognini of Someo, four kilometers downriver from Giumaglio. Giacomina was eight years Antonio's senior and was the widow of Carlo Marchese who had at least three children close in ages to Antonio's children.^{[Cen 1741, Mar 1745]} Giacomina's two youngest, fraternal twins, likely died before 1748 and elder daughter Giovanna lived with her likely uncle Giovanni Bartolomeo Marchese (who was also the godfather to Antonio's elder daughter) and his family by 1748, after her mother's remarriage. Giovanna later wed and moved to the neighboring village of Coglio.^{[Cen 1748]}

In 1748, both of Antonio's children lived with him and Giacomina, and later, when son Antonio wed, his bride Maria Domenica Gasparini lived with them as well.^{[Cen 1748]}

Giacomina was named as the godmother of Maria Teresia Stolfi, a twin who died in infancy, in 1757.^{[Bap 1757]}

Giovanni Antonio Cerini died on July 22, 1758, at his home in Giumaglio. He had apparently survived an unspecified malady that took the lives of six parishioners between February and April, but three months later died at the age of 45. He apparently had taken severly ill and all the last rites were administered on the 19th. He was buried two days after his death at the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1758]}

After Antonio's death, son Antonio married and apparently took over the family home. Daughter Maria continued to live there with her brother and sister-in-law, but stepmother Giacomina was enumerated living alone elsewhere in town.^{[Cen 1760]}

Giacomina (Tognino Marchese) Cerini died at her home in Giumaglio on March 7, 1762, the first to die during an apparent malady that took the lives of three adults in a two-week period. The illness likely struck suddenly as the last rites were given to her the two days prior. She was buried the same day at the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was 57 years old.^{[Dth 1762]}

Giovanna Maria (CERINI) PIEZZI^• (1721-1774)

1176. Giovanna Maria Cerini^• was born and baptized on September 2, 1721, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. Her godfather was named as Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi, the notary of the neighboring village of Coglio, and her godmother as Giacomina Pozzi.^{[Bap 1721]} Giovanna had an elder sister of the same name who was born five years earlier and apparently died. Giovanna married Domenico Piezzi^• on April 10, 1741, and became his third wife. She was 20 years his junior and he had five children from his first two marriages, the eldest of whom was barely two years younger than Giovanna. Giovanna and Domenico had six children together, including a pair of twin boys:^{[Cen 1748,1760,1769]}

Barely four months the death of Domenico's second wife, Domenico and Giovanna married on April 10, 1741, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. They obtained dispensation for the impediment of three equal, duplicate degrees of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, apparently in two lines) from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. The exact relationships are not yet known. Recorded witnesses were Domenico's nephew Giovanni Pietro Bonetti and Antonio Regolate.^{[Mar 1741]}

Giovanna and Domenico chose the following as godparents for their children:

1. Domenica (elder): Carlo Antonio Spadong(?) of Onsernone and Giovanna Maria Piezzi (Lesina), a likely cousin^{[Bap 1745]};
2. Domenico: Giacomo Piezzi and his sister Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Piezzi) Lesina, likely cousins^{[Bap 1748A]};
3. Francesco: Giovanni Pietro Bonetti, Domenico's nephew, and Mrs. Maria Maddalena (Sartori) Giumini^{3 [Bap 1748B]};
4. Bartolomeo: Giovanni Bartolomeo Marchese and Mrs. Maria Teresa (Sartori) Piezzi^{[Bap 1749]}
5. Domenica (younger): Giovanni Piezzi and Maria Teresia (Gasparini) Pedrotti^{[Bap 1752]}; and
6. Giovanna: Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti and Maria Margherita Pedrotti.^{[Bap 1755]}

Giovanna was named as godmother to niece Maria Cerini in 1740,^{[Bap 1740]} prior to her marriage to Domenico; and Domenico was named as godfather to Giovanna's niece, Giovanna Maria Cerini in 1744.^{[Bap 1744]}

In 1748, the family was enumerated in the parish census with Domenico's four older sons and their first two surviving children together. Afterward, at least through 1755, their next four children were added to the same parish census record.^{[Cen 1748]}

Children Giacomo, age 14, and Domenica, age 7, both died during a one-month period when four parishioners died in April and May 1753. They were both buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1753A,B]}

Giovanni Domenico Piezzi died on November 18, 1756, at his home in Giumaglio, at the age of 55. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1756]}

Giovanna carried on with his sons in their late teens and early 20s and her children ranging from toddler age to perhaps 11 years old. Domenico's three surviving sons from his first two marriages married and started families of their own in the late 1750s while her four surviving children all continued to live with her through at least 1769.^{[Cen 1760,1769]}

Youngest children Giovanni Bartolomeo, Maria Domenica and Giovanna Maria were confirmed on June 16 and 17, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Bartolomeo's sponsoring godfather was Giuseppe Tomasini of Lodano, 3 kilometers downriver from Giumaglio. Domenica's sponsoring godmother was named as Maria Cerini, Giovanna's niece, who would go on to marry Bartolomeo 11 years later. Giovanna's sponsoring godmother was the widow Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Piezzi, who was the wife of Domenico's late nephew, Giovanni Battista Piezzi.^{[Con 1761]}

Giovanna Maria (Cerini) Piezzi died on July 29, 1774, at her home in Giumaglio, apparently following a weeks-long illness in which her confession was given on the 6th and her last rites just before her death. She was 52 years old and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1774]}
