• and 2nd Generation: Elizabeth (Greib) Ulrich (~1720-~1780) - Part II - 3rd Generation
Daniel GREIB1 (~1690-)
1. Daniel Greib1 was born about 1690 and is believed to be the father of two children who married into the Ulrich family:
11. | Jacob Greib (Sr.) | 8 Aug 1712 | (1801) | (88) |
12. | Elizabeth Greib2 | (1720) | (1780) | (60) |
The Greib family likely immigrated from Hessen or Baden, Germany, in 1733. Both Jacob and Elizabeth married Ulrich siblings Elizabeth Ulrich and Stephen (Waggoner) Ulrich3.
Jacob GREIB (Sr.) (1712-1801)
11. Jacob Greib (Sr.) was born on August 8, 1712, in either Amöneburg or Gießen (Giessen), Hessen, Germany, or perhaps up the Rhein River in Baden, Germany. He immigrated to America on September 28, 1733, and married Elizabeth Ulrich in 1740 in York County, Pennsylvania. They had at least 10 children:
11A. | Jacob Cripe (Jr.) | (1746) | (1805) | (59) |
11B. | Johannes (John) Greib, Sr. | (1746-1749) | 9 Jul 1814 | (70) |
11C. | Elizabeth Greib | (1748) | (< 1799) | (< 51) |
11D. | Susannah Greib | (1747-1748) | 1818 | (70) |
11E. | Daniel Cripe, Sr. | 15 Apr 1752 | 23 Oct 1823 | (71) |
11F. | Samuel Greib, Sr. | (1755) | 1845 | (90) |
11G. | Mary Greib | (1756) | 1786 | (30) |
11H. | Esther Greib | (1762) | 1834 | (72) |
11I. | Catherine Greib | (1759/1764) | -- | -- |
11J. | Hannah Greib | (1767) | 1827 | (60) |
The Greib family settled in Morrison's Cove, a long valley that stretches across Bedford and Blair Counties, Pennsylvania. In 1776 they were recorded in Frankstown Township, Bedford County (later Huntingdon and finally Blair County), where they owned 200 acres, 4 of which were improved. Their sons Jacob Jr. and Daniel, and daughter Elizabeth Martin lived nearby. One of the Jacobs increased his land to 900 acres by 1782.[Tax 1776-1782]
Jacob Greib died on February 8, 1801, in Frankstown, then in Huntingdon County and later in Blair County, Pennsylvania.
Elizabeth (Ulrich) Greib is believed to have died soon after her husband in Huntingdon (Blair) County.
After Jacob's and Elizabeth's deaths, nearly all of their surviving children moved to western Ohio and settled in Montgomery County. Four arrived by 1804 and most of the rest were accounted for by 1809. Two (Samuel and Esther) continued northwest to Carroll County, Indiana, in the late 1820s.
