Giumini Family History, Part II

Giovanna GIUMINI (~1628-1685)

11. Giovanna Giumini was born about 1627 or 1628, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was the daughter of Giovanni^{[Dth 1685]}, who could correlate to our Zanis¹. So far she is only known through two parish records.

During the last week of May 1677, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Although Giovanna was not recorded as having been confirmed, she was named as the godmother of likly niece Maria Giumini at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31.^{[Con 1677]}

Giovanna Giumini, daughter of the late Giovanni, died at her home in Giumaglio on March 4, 1685, and buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was recorded to be "about 57 years" old.^{[Dth 1685]}

Giovanni GIUMINI (~1630-1690)

13. Giovanni Giumini was born in the early 1630s, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He married Giovanna Pozzi and had as many as four or five children:

Giovanni and Giovanna chose the following as godparents for their children:

1. Giacomo: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
2. Felice: Don Giovanni Battista Franzoni of Cevio and Maria Bonetti^{[Bap 1669]};
3. Marco Antonio: Giovanni Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Mazzini) Romagno^{[Bap 1672]};
4. Caterina: Giacomo Pietro Reit (Raitini/Molinari) and Giacomina Sartori^{[Bap 1675]}, and
5. Donato: Carlo Antonio Pozzi and the widow Mrs. Giacomina (Stolfi) Rusca (Giovanotti).^{[Bap 1678]}

In turn, Giovanna was named as godmother to Giovanna Mazzini after performing an emergency baptism on the infant.^{[Bap 1673]} Giovanna also performed an emergency baptism for a child of Antonio and Pietrina (Pezzoni) Giumini.^{[Bap 1668]}.

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Strangely, only daughter Caterina was recorded as having been confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her godmother was named as Maria Cerini. While Caterina, who was identified as the daughter of Giovanni and Giovanna Pozzi) Giumini, a Giovanna Giumini, identified only as the daughter of Giovanni, was recorded to have been confirmed on the same date immediately before her. This Giovanna in turn was named as godmother to two parish girls: Maria Maddalena Reit/Molinari and Maria Maddalena Piezzi, both at Someo.^{[Con 1677]}

Giovanni died sometime following the birth of son Donato in 1678^{[Bap 1678]} and before wife Giovanna's death in 1691.^{[Dth 1691]} Two Giovanni Giuminis of similar ages died during this period, one in 1681^{[Dth 1681]} and the other in 1690. The other is recorded to have died before 1685, which leaves the later candidate as the more likely. Giovanni Giumini, son of the late Zanis, died on August 13, 1690, at his home in Giumaglio. He was reported to be "about 60 years" old. Giovanni was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1690]}

Giovanna (Pozzi) Giumini died a year later on October 22, 1691, at her home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be 55 years old. Giovanna was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1691]}

In 1692, three Giumini households were enumerated following our Giovanni Giacomo Giumini (I)². The first was of Giovanni Giacomo Giumini (121) and his wife Maria Fusaschi, which was followed by siblings Marco Antonio and Caterina Giumini (123 and 124). Next came the family of and elder Giovanni Antonio Giumini (15).^{[Cen 1692]}

Giacomo's wife Maria Fusaschi apparently died between 1693 and 1698, probably in her early 30s. In that time Giacomo remarried to Maria Giumini, the daughter of Giovanni Antonio Giumini. Giacomo's sister Caterina was also enumerated with them in 1698, but was reported to be absent.^{[Cen 1698]} In the years that followed, Giacomo's family grew to four children and his siblings were no longer recorded.^{[Cen 1702-1709]}

Giovanni Giacomo GIUMINI (I)² (~1634-1699)

14. Giovanni Giacomo ("Rizonus") Giumini (I)² was born around 1634, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. He married Giovanna Beltrami (Beltami/Baltami/Baltrimi)¹ of Brontallo, Val Lavizzara, 14 kilometers upriver. They had five children before she died in 1691. Giacomo remarried to the widow Elena (Jorio) Pozzi, also of Brontallo, in 1692. She was about 24 years younger--he in his early 60s and she in her late 30s. They did not have any children together.

When son Giacomo was 11 years old, he was noted as absent in the parish census^{[Cen 1698]}, which likely indicates that he was working somewhere outside his home town.

Giacomo and Giovanna wed by 1677. During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giacomo was not confirmed but Giovanna was at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria (Ianzini) Lesina.^{[Con 1677B]} In turn, Giacomo was named as godfather to four children: Giovanni Battista Giumini, Gaspare Gaspari^{[Con 1677A]}, Giacomo Antonio Rossetti, and Giovanni Antonio Stolfi. In the last record, Giacomo was identifed as "Giovanni Giacomo Rizonus or Geminus" (Giumini), the only record of the name "Rizonus" during his lifetime.^{[Con 1677A-B]} Giovanna likewise was named as godmother to four parishioners: Apollonia Giumini (sister to Battista, above), Mrs. Domenica (Bonetti) Pedrotti, Anna Maria Marca, and Giacomina Marca.^{[Con 1677A]}

Giacomo and Giovanna chose the following as godparents for their children:

1. Maria: Giacomo Ianzi and Anna Maria Marca^{[Bap 1678]};
2. Anna Margherita: Giacomo Beltrani (Beltrami), perhaps Giovanna's brother, and Giovanna Giumini^{[Bap 1681]};
3. Caterina: Notary Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Caterina Pozzi^{[Bap 1683]};
4. Giacomo²: Giovanni Giacomo Giumini and Giovanna Ianzini, likely the wife of Giacomino Sartori^{[Bap 1687A]}; and
5. Battista: Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town doctor and don, and Maria Baltami (Beltrami) of Brontallo, likely Giovanna's sister.^{[Bap 1690]}

Prior to Giacomo's marriage, he was likely named as godfather to Domenico Giumini.^{[Bap 1675]} Giovanna was named as godmother to Pietro Paolo Piezzi^{[Bap 1677]}, her future son-in-law; Maria Barbara Rusca (Giovanotti), whose mother was also from Brontallo^{[Bap 1678B]}, and to Maria Rusca (Giovanotti).^{[Bap 1687B]}

Tragedy struck the Giuminis, and widely across Giumaglio, in 1686 when 25 parishioners died that year--the most on record in a single year. 15 of them, mostly children, died in the spring, including daughters Caterina and Anna Margherita, who died on April 4 and 5 at the ages of 4 and 2. Both were buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1686A/B]}

Giovanna (Beltrami) Giumini died on September 3, 1691, at their home in Giumaglio. She was reported to be "about 35 years" old. Giovanna was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1691]}

Giacomo and Elena married on July 27, 1692, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was the widow of Giovanni Antonio Pozzi. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediments of being twice related by affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood) from the Nuncio Apostolic to Switzerland in Lucerne. They were recorded to have a third and fourth degree in one line and a fourth degree in another. The exact connections of their relationships are not yet known, but they may have been through the Pozzi family and Elena's and Giovanna's roots in Brontallo. Recorded witnesses were Antonio Bonetti, Giovanni Antonio Cerini, and Giovanni Marca.^{[Mar 1692]}

Giovanni Giacomo Giumini died seven years later on November 7, 1699, at his home in Giumaglio. He was reported to be "about 65 years" old. Giacomo was buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1699]}

After Giacomo's death, children Maria and Giacomo continued to live with Elena through at least 1703^{[Cen 1703]}, after which Maria apparently moved out. Giacomo remained with Elena, even after he married, through at least 1709.^{[Cen 1709]}

Elena was named as godmother to Maria Pozzi, daughter of Don Giacomo Pietro Pozzi.^{[Bap 1702]} She was also a midwife and attended to the births of the Terini (Marchese) triplets (all of whom died soon after)^{[Bap 1708]} and Maria Margherita Pozzi, who was born in Elena's home on July 18, 1711.^{[Bap 1711]} (Note that midwives were only recorded when they performed baptisms under emergency conditions. She likely attended the births of many more, but was only named in baptism records when circumstances were less fortunate.)

Elena (Jorio) Giumini died on April 21, 1717, at her home in Giumaglio, at "about 61 years" old. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1717]}

Giovanni Antonio GIUMINI (~1643->1703)

16. Giovanni Antonio Giumini was likely a relative of Giovanni Giacomo Giumini (I)¹, perhaps a younger brother, and was enumerated following Giacomo¹ in the census of the parish of Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, in 1692. Antonio married Pietrina Pezzoni of Someo, 2 kilometers upriver, and had four children:

Curiously, in the first two records of their marriage--the baptism and death of the infant who died at birth in 1668--named Antonio as the son of Tonini Praonzi rather than Giumini. This is all the more curious because the midwife who baptized the child was Mrs. Giovanna Giumini (in Latin as "Gemini").^{[Bap 1668]} The spelling of Praonzi was reiterated in the child's death record.^{[Dth 1668]} Records afterward identify Antonio's father as Zanis Giumini¹.

Antonio and Pietrina chose the following as godparents for their children:

1. Maria: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
2. Infant: no godparents named^{[Bap 1668]};
3. Antonio: Giacomo Pezzoni of Someo (likely a maternal relative) and Maria Bonetti^{[Bap 1670]};
4. Maria: Giacomo Cerini and the widow Mrs. Maria (Marca) Sartori^{[Bap 1672]}; and
5. Santino: Giacomo Mirenini and Giacomina Stolfi.^{[Bap 1676]}

Oddly, only daughter Maria was recorded as having been confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her likely paternal aunt Giovanna Giumini was named as her godmother.^{[Con 1677]}

The family of four (less Santino) were enumerated together in 1692, and later, by 1698, son Antonio's wife Domenica Cerini was added.^{[Cen 1692-1698]}

Pietrina (Pezzoni) Giumini died on March 18, 1694, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was reported to be 57 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1694]}

By 1698 and through 1703, father and son were both recorded as being absent, perhaps working away at some distance from Giumaglio, which left daughter-in-law Domenica living alone. In 1703 it was noted that Domenica was living in the residence of Antonio Bonetti.^{[Cen 1698-1703]}

Giovanni Antonio Giumini probably died between 1703 and 1709 while in his 60s.^{[Cen 1703]}
