SARTORI Family History, Part I

December 2015
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Signorelli found in Prato (Prato-Sornico, 20 kilometers upriver from Giumaglio) that some family names reflected German occupational naming conventions, including Sartori (from the Italian sarto, which means "tailor"), which he likened to Schneider (tailor), and Ferrari (from the Italian ferraio, which means blacksmith), which he likened to Schmid (smith).[Signorelli 186]

Sartori Families of Giumaglio, 1692

Four Sartori households are found in the first surviving parish census of Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, in 1692. The heads of these households are subgrouped here by census page references and then in birth order for comparison. Others who died before 1692 have also been added for comparison, but lack page references:

Giacomo SARTORI1 (~1631-1693)

May 20141. Giacomo "Morètt" Sartori1 was born between 1627 and 1631, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He married Maddalena Pozzi1 and had at least one son, but may have had three daughters as well:

1X. Giovanna Sartori (1651) (> 1703) (> 52)
1X. Giacomina Sartori (1657) 2 Dec 1689 (32)
11. Domenica Sartori (< 1666) (> 1678) --
12. Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 (29) Jun 1668 2 Feb 1744 (75)

Giacomo and Maddalena named Giovanni Lesina "the elder" (who was married to Giovanna Sartori, daughter of the late Giacomo Sartori) and Maria Mazzini as godparents for son Pietro.[Bap 1668] The elder children were all born before available baptism records.

June 2015During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giacomo appears not to have been confirmed, but Maddalena was at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time her sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Elena (Pozzi) Caporgno of Someo.[Con 1677A] Daughter Domenica and son Giovanni Pietro followed, but were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31. Their godparents were respectively named as Mrs. Maria (Mazzini) Pozzi and Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, doctor of Giumaglio.[Con 1677B]

Morètt
Giacomo's name as "Morettinus" (Morètt) was first observed in 1683 to distinguish him from another Giacomo who was identified as "Grefius."[Con 1683] Later, Giacomo's son Giovanni Pietro2 was similarly recorded as such on three occassions during his life and posthumously.

Six years later, Carlo Ciceri, Bishop of Como, similarly held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia and Someo in June 1683. Giacomo was named as godfather to Giovanni Battista Cerini at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on June 19. In this record Giacomo was recorded as also being called "Morettinus."[Con 1683]

Maddalena (Pozzi) Sartori died on March 15, 1681, at the family home in Giumaglio. She had been in decline for at least a week prior. Maddalena was reported to be 55 years old and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1681]

In 1692, Giacomo, a widower of the age of 61, was enumerated with his son Pietro and Pietro's young familiy.[Cen 1692]

Giacomo Sartori died on March 8, 1693, at his home in Giumaglio, reportedly at the age of 65. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1693]

Giacomo SARTORI (~1641-1718)

May 2014A1. Giacomo "Grefius" Sartori was born about 1641, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He was about 10 years younger than our Giacomo Sartori1 so perhaps he was a nephew. Giacomo married Maria Cerini and had as many as eight children:

A11. Giovanni Antonio Sartori (1667) (> 1724) (> 68)
A12. Giovanni Sartori (31 Aug 1670) 21 Jan 1720 (49)
A13. Cristiano Sartori 30 Aug 1674 26 Feb 1706 (31)
A14. Eva Maria Sartori 21 Feb 1678 --  --
A15. Giovanna Sartori (1681) 15 Jul 1721 (40)
A16. Domenica Sartori (1683) 20 Nov 1735 (52)
A17. Catterina Sartori 2 Jun 1683 --  --
A18. Maria Sartori 7 Feb 1687 (1709) (20)

Giacomo and Maria chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Antonio: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
  2. Giovanni: Giovanni Cerini and Maria Mazzini[Bap 1670];
  3. Cristiano: Giacomo Piezzi1 and Giovanna Cerini[Bap 1674];
  4. Eva Maria: Antonio Pedrotti and Maria Cerini[Bap 1678];
  5. Giovanna: no baptism records found in Giumaglio;
  6. Domenica: no baptism records found in Giumaglio;
  7. Catterina: Giovanni Cerini and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Cerini[Bap 1683]; and
  8. Maria: Don Giovanni Battista Ba[~e~]i [illegible] of Campo and Mrs. Domenica (Tognini/Romani) Bonetti.[Bap 1687]

During the last week of May 1677, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Maria was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time her sponsoring godmother was named Mrs. Giovanna (Bonetti) Cerini.[Con 1677A] Sons Giovanni and Cristiano were confirmed the following week at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, and their godfathers were named as Giovanni Pietro Pozzi and Giacomo Cerini, respectively.[Con 1677B] Giacomo and son Giovanni Antonio appear not to have been confirmed.

Grefius
Giacomo's name as "Grefius" was first observed in 1683 to distinguish him from another Giacomo1 who was identified as "Morettinus."[Con 1683] Later, daughter Maria's baptism record named her father as "Sartorio or Grefis" and her as "Sartoria or Grefia."[Bap 1687]

Six year later, Carlo Ciceri, Bishop of Como, similarly held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia and Someo in June 1683. Giacomo was named as godfather to Giacomo Antonio Pedrotti at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on June 19. In this record he was first named as "Grefius" to distinguish him from Giacomo1 "Morettinus."[Con 1683]

The family was first enumerated in the parish census of 1692, with Giacomo, Maria, and five of their six children, less Domenica.[Cen 1692] All six children were counted in 1698, so why Domenica was omitted is unknown.[Cen 1698]

Maria (Cerini) Sartori (recorded simply as "Maria Cerini") likely died on April 18, 1695, at her home in Giumaglio. She was reported to be 50 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1695]

By 1698, sons Antonio and Cristiano had both wed and the extended family was joined by their wives, Maria Cerini and Giovanna Marchese, respectively.[Cen 1698]

Sons Antonio and Giovanni were both reported absent in 1702, perhaps working some distance from Giumaglio, but Antonio's wife Maria remained. Giovanni had also recently married Elena Sartori, the daughter of yet another Giacomo Sartori, but from Bignasco, 10 kilometers upriver. Elena was also reported absent as well. Son Cristiano, his wife, and the two youngest daughters all continued with the family. Daughter Giovanna had married Giovanni Marchese by that year.[Cen 1702-1703]

None were reported absent in 1709, but son Cristiano had died by then and his widow Giovanna was counted as her own household following that of the Sartoris.[Cen 1709]

Giacomo Sartori died sometime between 1709 and 1721 and may correlate to the Giacomo Sartori who died on April 4, 1718, in Giumaglio, at the reported age of 70. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1718]

Giovanna (SARTORI) LESINA (~1641-1676)

B1. Giovanna Sartori was born about 1641, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was a daughter of "the late" Giacomo Sartori, who died sometime before 1669.[Bap 1669] She married Giovanni Lesina (Eusebio) and had three children:

(B11.) Giovanna Lesina (1666) (> 1709) (> 39)
B12. Giacomo Antonio Lesina 18 Jun 1668 (21 Oct 1686) (18)
B13. Angelo Maria Lesina 3 Jun 1672 (> 1703) --
B14. Catterina Lesina 31 Oct 1674 --  --

Giovanna and Giovanni named the following as godparents to their children:

  1. Giovanna: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
  2. Giacomo Antonio: Zane Pozzi and Mattia Sartori[Bap 1668];
  3. Angelo: Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and his sister Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Cerini[Bap 1672]; and
  4. Catterina: Giacomo Cerini and Giacomina Sartori.[Bap 1674]

Giovanna was named as godmother to Giovanni Antonio Giumini.[Bap 1669] Giovanni was named as godfather to Giovanni Pietro Sartori2.[Bap 1668]

Giovanna (Sartori) Lesina died at the family home in Giumaglio on November 5, 1676. She was reported to be 35 years old. Giovanna was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1718]

Six months after Giovanna's death, Giovanni and Maria Ianzi (Ianzini) were engaged and two weeks prior to their marriage, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Maria and Giovanni's daughters Giovanna and Catterina were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time their sponsoring godmothers were named as Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi; Mrs. Maria (Pozzi) Ianzi, Maria's sister-in-law; and Maria Cerini.[Con 1677A] Giovanni's sons Giacomo Antonio and Angelo were confirmed the following week at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time their godfathers were named as Giovanni Giacomo Ianzi, perhaps Maria's brother or cousin, and Battista Mogius (Delnotaro) of Coglio.[Con 1677B]

Giovanni and Maria wed on June 7, 1677, at Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the second and fourth degrees of consanguinity (i.e., cousins, apparently first cousins, twice removed; however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Antonio Cerini1 and Giovanni Antonio Pozzi.[Mar 1677] Giovanni and Maria had two children:

 -- Giacomina Lesina 2 Jan 1679 13 Jan 1720 (41)
 -- Giovanni Giacomo Lesina 8 Feb 1682 (< 1728) (< 45)

Giovanni Lesina died on January 12, 1684, at his home in Giumaglio. He was about 55 years old. Giovanni was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1684] Giovanni left Maria with four children ranging from the age of 23 months to 11 years.

Elder son Giacomo Antonio died at the family home in Giumaglio on October 21, 1686. He was recorded to be "about 20 years" old but was 18. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1686]

Eight years after Giovanni's death, elder son Angelo was named as head of household in the first parish census of 1692 with daughter Catterina, ages 19 and 17. With them were their stepmother Maria Ianzi/Ianzini and their two younger half-siblings, ages 14 and 11 (actually 13 and 10). That arrangement continued through 1703. Throughout this period, Angelo was annotated as "absent," perhaps working some distance from Giumaglio.[Bap 1692-1703]

Furthermore, in 1692, the Lesina household was enumerated following those of Antonio Lesina, who was about 9 years younger than Giovanni, and another household of two grown brothers who were sons of another deceased Giovanni Lesina who was about 12 years younger than Giovanni.

Mattia SARTORI (~1630-1681)

B2. Mattia Sartori was born about 1630, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was a daughter of "the late" Giacomo Sartori, who died sometime before 1673. Her relationship to our Giacomo Sartori1 is not yet known. Mattia married Antonio Bonetti (II), a widower some 25 years older with two surviving sons, on August 15, 1677. They had one son together before Mattia's early death in 1681. Antonio went on to remarry twice more and fathered five more children:

 -- Giovanni Battista Bonetti (Sr.) (1661) (> 1703) (> 42)
 -- Giacomo Antonio Bonetti 8 Jan 1668 12 Feb 1709 (41)

 -- Giovanna Bonetti 2 May 1670 --  --

B11. Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti 19 Jun 1679 (1741-1748) (60s)

 -- Antonio Bonetti (III) 27 Sep 1683 (> 1703) (> 20)
 -- Domenica Bonetti 18 Aug 1688 9 Feb 1725 (36)

 -- Domenica Bonetti 20 Aug 1697 17 Jan 1698 (4 mos.)
 -- Giovanna Maria Bonetti 16 Jul 1699 (Infancy) (Infancy)
 -- Maria Bonetti 15 Feb 1701 27 Sep 1701 (7 mos.)

Antonio's first wife was also named Mattia (family name unknown). She was at least the mother of Giacomo Antonio.[Bap 1668] Mattia died on October 15, 1669, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was reported to be 32 years old. Mattia was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1669]

May 2015Antonio may have been married a second time to Domenica Lesina, with whom he had a daughter, Giovanna, only six months after Mattia's death.[Bap 1670] Domenica died at the age of 43 on January 23, 1677, at the family home in Giumaglio.[Dth 1677]

June 2015In the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. The Bonetti family was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time Mattia was already recorded as the wife of Antonio nearly three months prior to their marriage. Mattia's godmother was named as Mrs. Galizia (Moggia) Delnotaro of Coglio and Antonio's son Giacomo Antonio's godfather was named as Francesco Pozzi.[Con 1677]

Mattia and Antonio wed on August 15, 1677, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was about 27 years old and he about 52. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediments of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., third cousins) and the fourth degree of affinitiy (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood, perhaps through Antonio's previous wife). The exact connections of their relationships are not known. Recorded witness to their union were Giacomo Pozzi, Giovanni Cerini, and Giacomo Terini (Marchese).[Mar 1677]

Mattia and Antonio chose Giovanni Cerini (Jr.) and Giovanna Sartori as godparents for son Giacomo.[Bap 1679]

Mattia Sartori served as midwife during the birth of an unnamed child, born to Giovanni Cerini and Maria Giovanotti, a month before her marriage in 1677. The child died shortly after birth.[Bap 1677]

Mattia was named as godmother to Giovanna Sartori, the daughter of her likely brother Giacomo (Jr.)[Bap 1672]; and Domenico Cerini.[Bap 1673]

Mattia (Sartori) Bonetti died on February 3, 1681, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be 30 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1681]

Only 10 weeks after Mattia's death, Antonio remarried to Anna Maria Marca, whom he wed on April 14, 1681, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Recorded witness to their union were Giovanni Cerini, Giacomo Sartori, and Giacomo Antonio Sartori.[Mar 1681] They had two children together before Anna's death between 1688 and 1696. Curiously none of their family as counted in the parish's first recorded census of 1692.[Cen 1692]

Antonio's third marriage was to Maria Maddalena Cerini, whom he married on October 5, 1696. He was about 43 years older than Maria, he about 70 and she about 27. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of third equal degrees of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood), perhaps indicating that Maria had been a cousin of either Mattia or Anna. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari and Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi.[Mar 1696] Antonio and Maria had three daughters together, despite Antonio's advanced age, the third of whom died two weeks after Antonio. Sadly none of their daughters survived beyond infancy.

The parish census of 1698 confirmed the dramatic age disparity between Antonio and Maria, recording him as 72 years old and she as 28. Antonio and Mattia's son Giacomo, age 19, was noted as absent, perhaps working some distance from Giumaglio, while his wife, Elena Lesina, remained with the family. Antonio and Anna's children Antonio (Jr.), age 14, and Domenica, age 9, completed the blended family.[Cen 1698] Not noted was Antonio and Maria's first daughter Domenica, who died months before the census.[Dth 1698] I have yet to determine how it came that Antonio had two daughters named Domenica.

Antonio and his wives named the following as godparents to their children:

  1. Battista: (no baptism records exist before 1667);
  2. Giacomo Antonio: Pietro Bonetti and Mrs. Antonia (Coirata) Bonetti[Bap 1668];
  3. Giacomo: Giovanni Cerini (Jr.) and Giovanna Sartori[Bap 1679];
  4. Antonio (Jr.): Giovanni Pedrotti and Margherita Bonetti, the daughter of another, deceased, and likely elder Antonio Bonetti[Bap 1683];
  5. Domenica (elder): Pietro Marca, Anna's brother, and Mrs. Giovanetta (Bonetti) Giornica, who was the daughter of Mrs. Antonia (Coirata) Bonetti, godmother to son Giacomo Antonio, above[Bap 1688];
  6. Domenica (younger): Antonio Marca (Jr.) and Marta Cerini, Maria's younger sister[Bap 1697];
  7. Giovanna: Stefano Pozzi and Mrs. Giovanna (Stefani) Lesina[Bap 1699]; and
  8. Maria: Giovanni Lafranchi and Mrs. Maria (Lafranchi) Sartori[Bap 1701], the wife of Giacomo Sartori, Mattia's likely brother.

Antonio Bonetti (Sr.) died on January 27, 1701, at his home in Giumaglio. He was recorded to be "about 70 years" old, but was about 76. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1701]

Giacomino SARTORI (~1652->1709)

May 2014B3. Giacomo "Giacomino" Sartori (Jr.) was born about 1652, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He was a generation younger than our Giacomo Sartori1 and was likely an elder brother to Giovanni Sartori. Giacomino married three times. His first marriage was to Maria Bonetti, with whom he had three children during their brief marriage of a few years. Giacomino then married Giovanna Ianzini and had four children before she died by 1697. Lastly, Giacomino remarried to Giovanna Maria Casalina/Lafranchi of the neighboring village of Coglio. They had two daughters together:

Giacomino and Maria Bonetti wed on February 28, 1672, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Cerini, Giacomo Pozzi, and Giovanni Pozzi.[Mar 1672]

Maria (Bonetti) Sartori died on November 12, 1676, at the family home in Giumaglio, following an illness of at least four days. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was recorded to be 28 years old.[Dth 1676] She and Giacomino had only been married four years and only son Giacomo Antonio survived her.

When son Giacomo Antonio was 3 years old, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giacomo Antonio was confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, 1677, at which time his godfather was named as Battista Mogius (Delnotaro) of Coglio.[Con 1677]

Giacomino and Giovanna Ianzini married on July 16, 1677, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the third degree of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood), perhaps indicating wives Giovanna and Maria were cousins. Giovanna was likely pregnant at the time. Even though their daughter came nine and half months after their wedding day, the traditional three marriage declarations were made on July 6, 7, and 8, and their marriage took place the day after receiving dispensation from the Nuncio Apostolic to Switzerland in Lucerne. Their wedding day also happened to be the first birthday of daughter Catterina. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giacomo Sartori and Giacomo Pozzi.[Mar 1677]

Giacomino and likely brother Giovanni were enumerated adjacent to one another in the first parish census of 1692, January 2015however, both had sons born the same day on August 28, 1681, yet neither chose the other as a godfather for any of their children.[Bap 1681] Giacomino and son Antonio, age 19, were both reported absent that year, perhaps working some distance from Giumaglio.[Cen 1692]

Tragedy struck the family on April 30, 1684, when 2-year-old son Battista apparently fell into a local stream ("Riale," presumably "Riale di Giumaglio") and died. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1684]

Giovanna (Ianzini) Sartori died between 1692 and 1696, while in her late 30s or early 40s.[Cen 1692-1698]

Casalina/Lafranchi
Giovanna's family name was not recorded in the parish census of 1698, but she was noted to be from Coglio. She was recorded as a "Casalina" from Coglio in the parish censuses of 1702, 1703, and 1709. In her children's baptism records, however, she was recorded as the "daughter of Joannis Jacobi Lafranchi of Coglio."

Giacomino remarried to Giovanna Maria Casalina/Lafranchi by 1696 and their first daughter was born in 1697. Giacomino's daughter Giovanna was the only one to remain from his first marriage. Despite having a younger daughter of the same name, the younger one went by "Maria." What became of son Antonio is not known.[Bap 1697, Cen 1698]

Giacomino and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giovanna (elder): Giacomo Pietro Cerini and Mattia Sartori, likely Giacomino's sister[Bap 1672];
  2. Giacomo Antonio: Bernardo Sartori of Coglio and Mrs. Maria (Ferari) Bonetti[Bap 1673];
  3. Catterina Sinforosa: Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Mrs. Giovanna (Sartori) Lesina[Bap 1676];
  4. Giacomina: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi and Domenica Ianzi[Bap 1678];
  5. Battista (elder): Antonio Cerini and Anna Maria Ianzini, perhaps Giovanna's younger sister[Bap 1681];
  6. Giovanna (younger): Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 and Maddalena Ianzini, likely Giovanna's younger sister[Bap 1683];
  7. Battista (younger): Giovanni Antonio Pozzi and Mrs. Domenica [illegible] of Coglio[Bap 1686];
  8. Giovanna Maria (younger): Giovanni Antonio Sartori and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Delnotaro) Pozzi[Bap 1697]; and
  9. Catterina Illuminata: Antonio Caneverini of Coglio and Catterina Lesina.[Bap 1700]

Maria was named as godmother to nephew Pietro Antonio Bonetti[Bap 1671]

Giovanna was named as godmother to Maria Bonetti.[Bap 1701]

Giacomino and his wife were not found in records after 1709. At that time they were reported to be 54 and 40 years old, respectively.[Cen 1709] Daughter Giovanna (born 1683) is believed to have married Guglielmo Stolfi in 1709 and died the following year at the age of 26. Her death was the last record of this Sartori family.

Giovanni SARTORI (~1660-<1698)

May 2014C1. Giovanni Sartori was born about 1659 or 1660, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He was the son of Giovanni Antonio Sartori. Giovanni married Elena Stolfi, who was five or six years older than he. They had three children together:

C11. Giovanni Antonio Sartori 28 Aug 1681 (1698-1702) (18)
C12. Maria Sartori 22 Nov 1683 16 Apr 1733 (49)
C13. Carlo Antonio Sartori 31 Oct 1689 14 Aug 1693 (3)

Giovanni and Elena wed at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta on February 25, 1675. Their marriage recorded identified their fathers as the late Giovanni Antonio Sartori and Giovanni Stolfi. Witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Giovanni Cerini, and Pietro Pedrotti.[Mar 1675]

Two years afther they wed, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Elena (identified without mention of her husband) was confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, 1677, at which time her sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Cerini.[Con 1677] Giovanni appears not to have been confirmed.

Giovanni and Elena chose the following as godparents for their children:

Giovanni and suspected brother Giacomino were enumerated adjacent to one another in the first parish census of 1692, January 2015however, both had son born the same day on August 28, 1681, yet neither chose the other as a godfather for any of their children.[Bap 1681] Giovanni and eldest son Antonio, age 10, were both reported absent that year, perhaps working some distance from Giumaglio.[Cen 1692]

Giovanni Sartori died between 1692 and 1698 while in his 30s. Youngest son Carlo also died during that same time span and eldest Antonio died sometime after 1698 and having attained the age of 18.[Cen 1698]

Elena stayed with her daughter Maria through 1709 and after Maria's marriage to Carlo Maria Bonetti, the son of Pietro Bonetti, who as her younger brother's godfather.[Cen 1702-1709]

Elena (Stolfi) Sartori died on April 16, 1714, at her home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Elena was 60 years old.[Dth 1714]
