Giovanni "Zane" POZZI² (~1643-~1706)

Zane in turn was named as godfather to Giacomo Antonio Lesina^{[Bap 1668A]}; Giovanni Stolfi (either this Zane or the younger)^{[Bap 1690]}; Maria Cerini^{[Bap 1693]}; Maria Pozzi, daughter of the younger Zane^{[Bap 1693]}; Maddalena Stolfi, cousin to Giovanni Stolfi, above^{[Bap 1694]}; and Giacomina Bonetti.^{[Bap 1698]}

Giovanna was also named as godmother to Domenica Scamoni.^{[Bap 1700]}

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Zane appears not to have been confirmed, but Giovanna and sons Giacomo and Angelo were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22. Their sponsoring godparents were: Catterina Pozzi, who had been godmother to daughter Lucia, Giacomo Terini (Marchese), and Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi.^{[Con 1677A]} Children Pietro Antonio and Lucia, on other hand, were confirmed a week later at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time their godparents were named as Giovanni Pozzi and Domenica Sartori, Giovanna's goddaughter.^{[Con 1677B]} Giovanna in turn was named as godmother at Maggia to Maria Cerini; Mrs. Margherita (Balzari) Stolfi, aunt to the two Stolfi children above; and Domenica Sartori, godmother to daugher Lucia, above.^{[Con 1677A]}

In the first parish census of Giumaglio the family was counted with seven children surving children except Giacomo, who was last recorded as a godfather in 1686^{[Bap 1686]}. Next elder son, Angelo, was noted as absent, likely working some distance from home.^{[Cen 1692]} Come 1698, Angelo was still noted as absent, daughter Lucia was no longer counted (perhaps married), and youngest daughter Domenica was added.^{[Cen 1698]} Over the next four years later, daughters Margherita and Giacomina wed, leaving four sons and young Domenica. Added to the family was Giacomina Rosa Pozzi, a servant, who was likely a younger sister to the younger Zane.^{[Cen 1702-1703]}

Giovanni "Zane" Pozzi likely died on either October 8, 1705, or three months later on January 8, 1706, at his home in Giumaglio. On those dates, two men named Giovanni Pozzi died, reportedly aged 58 and 62 respectively. While Zane, who would have been about 62, fits better for the later date, the other Giovanni^2A, who was older, should have been about 74, but if the priest was clear about their relative ages, might the first refer to the younger and the second to the elder? The two records give no further clues to distinguish the two men. Both were buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1705,1706]}

Giovanna Maria (Mazzini) Pozzi likely died between 1703 and 1709.^{[Cen 1703-1709]} She was likely in her late 50s.

Giacomo POZZI (<1668->1686)

B1A. Giacomo Pozzi was born before 1668, likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He lived through at least 1686 when he was named as a godfather.^{[Bap 1686]}

Giacomo was later named as godfather to Giacomo Romagno, a likely cousin on his mother's Mazzini side^{[Bap 1683]}; and Giacomo Cerini^{[Bap 1686]}, who died eight months later. Giacomo Pozzi did not appear in the records of Giumaglio parish afterward.

Giovanni Angelo POZZI (1668-1719)

B1B.Giovanni Angelo Pozzi was born on Septebmer 16, 1668, and baptized, simply as "Angelus," on Friday, September 21, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Don Giovanni Battista Franzoni of Cevio and Giovanna Cerini.^{[Bap 1668B]} Angelo first married Maria Pietrina Stolfi about January 12, 1705, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio, but she died a month after giving birth. Five months later Angelo remarried to married Maria Catterina Ianzi on June 7, 1707, in an apparent double wedding with Angelo's younger brother Stefano⁴, who married Pietrina's younger sister, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. They had six children together:

Recorded witnesses to Angelo's and Maria Pietrina's wedding were Angelo's younger brother Stefano Pozzi and Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi.^{[Mar 1705]}

Maria Pietrina (Stolfi) Pozzi on February 22, 1707, five weeks after giving birth to son Giovanni who died the same day. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Bap 1707, Dth 1707A/B]} Maria was about 25 years old.

Before Angelo and Catterina's marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the third and fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, once removed) in one line, the fourth degree (third cousins) in another line, and also a third degree of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood). The exact connections of these relationships are not known. Angelo was about 21 years older than Catterina--he about 38 and she about 18. Recorded witness were Angelo's younger brother Stefano Pozzi and Giacomo Antonio Lesina^{[Mar 1707]} (more likely Giovanni Giacomo Lesina, Catterina's cousin).

Two years after their marriage the parish census recorded the Pozzi household as: Angelo and wiife Catterina (mis-recorded as "Jacobina"); younger brother Pietro Antonio, who was noted as absent; brother Stefano and his wife Giacomina; and siblings Filippo and Domenica.^{[Cen 1709]}

Angelo and Catterina chose the following godparents for their children:

• Giacomo: Don Giacomo Pietro Pozzi, the town surgeon, and Maria Maddalena Pozzi^{[Bap 1708]}, both of whom wed the following year;
• Battista: Don Captain Giovanni Battista Franzoni of Cevio and Donna Anna Catterina Franzoni, wife of Don Knight Giovanni Franzoni of Cevio^{[Bap 1710]};
• Francesco: Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and Giovanna Sartori^{[Bap 1712]};
• Angelo (Jr.): Giovanni Giacomo Adami and Mrs. Domenica (Tomasini) Pozzi, wife of Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio^{[Bap 1716]}, above;
• Unnamed infant: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Catterina Pozzi^{[Bap 1717]}; and
• Angela: Giovanni Mazzini (Jr.) and Giovanna Maria Gasparini, Angelo's niece.^{[Bap 1719]}

Giovanni Angelo Pozzi died on November 17, 1719, at his home in Giumaglio, four weeks before the birth of daughter Angela. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1719]} He was 51 years old.

Catterina lived through at least 1741.^{[Cen 1741]}

Margherita (POZZI GASPARI) SARTORI (1677-1712)

B1F.Maria Margherita Pozzi was born on July 18, 1677, and baptized on the 20th, the Feast of Santa Margherita, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Giacomo Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Parinoni) Pozzi^{[Bap 1677]}, the wife of town doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, who was godfather to elder sister Lucia. Maria married Daniele Gaspari on February 26, 1699, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio.^{[Mar 1699]} They had two children together, the second of whom was born six months after Daniele's early death:

Before their marriage, Maria and Daniele obtained dispensation for the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., they were third cousins). Their exact relationship is not known but Daniele also had Pozzi ancestry. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giovanni "Rix" ("Rizzo"?) Cerini and Pietro Gaspari (Gasparini).^{[Mar 1699]}

Just before the birth of their first child, Maria and Daniele were enumerated in Daniele's father Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari's household, along with his younger brother Giovanni Antonio. Daniele was recorded as absent, perhaps working some distance away from home. Enumerated before them was another Gaspari household--that of another Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari who was 3 years older. Oddly enough, it was the elder Gaspari whose children took the name Gasparini and the younger whose children kept the name. In that household was Maria's younger sister Giacomina and her husband Pietro Natale Gaspari (later Gasparini). Pietro was also noted as absent^{[Cen 1702-1703]}

Maria and Daneile chose the following godparents for their children:

• Giovanna: Stefano Pozzi⁴, Maria's younger brother, and Mrs. Maddalena (Ianzi [Ianzini]) (Giumini)^{[Bap 1703]}; and
• Daniele (Jr.): Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Domenica Pozzi^{[Bap 1709]}, Maria's youngest sister.

Daniele Gaspari died on June 19, 1709, at the family home in Giumaglio. Daniele was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Mar 1699]} He was only 32 years old.

Maria was about three months pregnant at the time of Daniele's death and when their son was finally born he died on either the same day or the next.^{[Bap 1709]}

Married remarried to Giovanni Pietro Sartori², a widower with about four surviving children, on May 19, 1711, in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was about 33 years old and Pietro was just short of his 43rd birthday. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connections of their relationship is not yet known). Recorded witnesses were Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Pietro Gasparini^{[Mar 1711]}, presumably the same one who witnessed her first marriage.

Two months after their marriage. Maria Margherita was named as the godmother and apparent namesake of Maria Margherita Marca/Marcha.^{[Bap 1711]}

Maria Margherita (Pozzi Gaspari) Sartori died on January 23, 1712, at their home in Giumaglio, just eight months after their marriage. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was reported to be 33 years old, but was 34.^{[Dth 1712]}

Stefano POZZI³ (1680-1719)

B1G.Stefano Pozzi³ was born on February 3, 1680, and baptized the following day in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Martino Macagnino of Cevio and Maria Cerini.^{[Bap 1680]} Stefano married Giacomina Stolfi³, the sister of his elder brother Angelo's late wife, Pietrina. They married on June 7, 1707, in an apparent double wedding with brother Angelo, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. They had four daughters:

Recorded witnesses to the marriage of Stefano and Giacomina were Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Francesco Pozzi. Stefano also served as witness to his brother's marriage on the same day.^{[Mar 1707]}

Two years after their marriage the parish census recorded the Pozzi household as: elder brother Angelo and wiife Catterina (mis-recorded as "Jacobina"); elder brother Pietro Antonio, who was noted as absent; Stefano and wife Giacomina; and younger siblings Filippo and Domenica.^{[Cen 1709]}

Stefano and Giacomina chose the following godparents for their daughters:

1. Giovanna⁴: Giovanni Antonio Lesina and Margherita Mazzini^{[Bap 1712]}, perhaps Stefano's cousin on the Mazzini side;
2. Elena: Giovanni Giacomo Giovanotti and Giovanna Maria Terini (Marchese)^{[Bap 1714]};
3. Catterina: Giovanni Pozzi and Giovanna Maria Piezzi^{[Bap 1716]}; and
4. Bertina: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (brother of Giovanni, above) and Mrs. Bertina (Pozzi) Lesina^•.^{[Bap 1718]}

Giacomina and Stefano Pozzi died nine days apart on December 20 and 29, 1719, at their home in Giumaglio.^{[Dth 1719A/B]} They were 29 and 39 years old. They were both buried the follwing day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

Giacomina (POZZI) GASPARINI (1682-1732)

B1H.Giacomina Pozzi was born on May 26, 1682, and baptized two days later during the Feast of Corpus Christi in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Antonio Cerini of Riveo, 5 kilometers upriver, and Giacomina Tognini/Romagno of Giumaglio.^{[Bap 1682]} Giacomina married Pietro Natale Gaspari (later Gasparini), a widower who was 9 years her senior--she was 19 and he was 28. They wed on December 13, 1701, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. They had four children together:

Pietro had previously been married to Maria Catterina Pozzi, but she died after only a year and a half of marriage.

Before their marriage, Giacomina and Pietro were granted dispensation for the impediments of the second and third degrees of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood) in one line, a fourth degree in another line, and also a degree of consanguinity (i.e., by blood) that was "detained" (detineri). The nature of these relationships are not known but the affinity suggests that Giacomina and Catterina were related along their Pozzi lines. Recorded witnesses were Daniele Gaspari, husband to Giacomina's elder sister, Maria Margherita, and Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi, who had married Pietro's sister Maria earlier in the year.^{[Mar 1701]}

Just before the birth of their first child, Giacomina and Pietro were enumerated in Pietro's father Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari's household, along with Pietro's elder brother Giovanni and his wife Maddalena Pozzi. Pietro was recorded as absent, perhaps working some distance away from home. Enumerated next was another Gaspari household--that of another Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari who was 3 years younger. Oddly enough, it was the elder Gaspari whose children took the name Gasparini and the younger whose children kept the name. In that household was Giacomina's elder sister Maria and husband Daniele Gaspari. Daniele was also noted as absent^{[Cen 1702-1703]}

Giacomina and Pietro chose the following godparents for their children:

1. Giovanna Maria: Stefano Pozzi⁴, Giacomina's elder brother, and Mrs. Maria (Gasparini) Pozzi, Pietro's sister^{[Bap 1703]} and wife of Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi;
2. Giacomo: Daniele Gaspari, husband to Giacomina's elder sister Maria Margherita, and Mrs. Maria (Delnotaro) Pozzi, wife of Giacomo Pietro Pozzi^{[Bap 1704]};
3. Paolo: no baptism records found in Giumaglio^{[Cen 1709]}; and
4. Felice: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi, Pietro's brother-in-law, and Mrs. Maria (Pozzi) Gaspari, Giacomina's elder sister.^{[Bap 1706]}

Pietro's elder brother died in October 1708 and his widowed sister-in-law, Maria Maddalena (Pozzi) Gasparini joined the family.^{[Cen 1709]}

Pietro Natale Gasparini died at his home in Giumaglio on November 12, 1719, and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. He was 46 years old.^{[Dth 1719]}

Giacomina (Pozzi) Gasparini died 13 years later on November 28, 1732, at the age of 50. She was also buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio.^{[Dth 1732]}

Giacomo Filippo POZZI^• (1687-1741)

B1J.Giacomo Filippo Pozzi^• was born on June 2, 1687, and baptized the following day in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town doctor, and Maria Catterina Pozzi.^{[Bap 1687]} He first married Maria Mazzini and had one child before her death. He later married Giovanna Maria Marchese and had five more children:

Giacomo Filippo married Maria Mazzini on July 8, 1717, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Before their marriage they were granted dispensation for the impediment of the third degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however the exact relationship is not known but likely lies along their Mazzini lines). Recorded witness to their union were Giacomo Filippo's elder brother Giovanni Angelo Pozzi and Giovanni Pietro Bonetti.^{[Mar 1717]}

Maria was named as godmother to Giacomo Filippo's grandniece Maria Domenica Piezzi.^{[Bap 1723]}

Maria (Mazzini) Pozzi died on June 28, 1727, and was buried in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was was reportedly "about 30 years" old^{[Dth 1727]}, but was 38.

Three months after Maria's death, Giacomo Filippo remarried to Giovanna Maria Marchese on September 30, 1727, also at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the third and fourth degrees of consanguinity (i.e., second counsins, once removed; however the exact relationship is not known but likely lies along their Pozzi lines). Giacomo Filippo was 40 years old and Giovanna was 26. Recorded witnesses were Giacomo Scamoni (III) and Carlo Antonio Lesina.^{[Mar 1727]}

Giacomo Filippo and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:

1. Giovanna (elder): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi^• of Coglio and Donna Maria Pozzi, wife of Don Giacomo Pietro Pozzi of Giumaglio^{[Bap 1718]}, the town surgeon;

Similarly, Giovanna was named as godmother (prior to her marriage to Giacomo Pietro) to: cousin Maria Teresia Marchese^{[Bap 1721A]}; cousin Giovanna Maria Sartori^{[Bap 1721C]}; and after her marriage to: Giovanna Maria Ianzini^{[Bap 1727]}; Giovanna Maria Pozzi^{[Bap 1735]}; and Giacomo Filippo's grandniece; and, after Giacomo Pietro's death, to cousin Maria Elena Sartori.^{[Bap 1745]}

Giacomo Filippo Pozzi died on May 29, 1741, and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1741]} He was 53 years old.

After Giacomo Filippo

The parish census of 1741 recorded the family with Giacomo Filippo (despite the fact that he died two weeks before), Giovanna, and all six children, including the two half-sisters named Giovanna.^{[Cen 1741]}

Come 1760, Giovanna was living with younger son Giacomo Pietro and enumerated following the household of elder son Giovanni and his family.^{[Cen 1760]}

Giovanna Maria (Marchese) Pozzi died on March 18, 1762, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Giovanna was 61 years old.^{[Dth 1762]}

Domenica (POZZI) BONETTI (1695-1719)

B1L.Domenica Pozzi was born on May 17, 1695, and baptized the following day in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Giovanni Pietro Sartori² (who would later marry Domenica's elder sister Maria) and Giovanna Mazzini.^{[Bap 1695]} Domenica married Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti, a widower, on October, 24, 1719, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Sadly, Domenica died seven weeks later.

When Domenica was 14 years old she was named as godmother to nephew Daniele Gaspari (Jr.), but the baby died soon after birth.^{[Bap 1709]}

Husband Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti had previously been married to Elena Lesina and had one son who likely died in childhood. Elena died on August 30, 1719, at their home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be "about 40 years" old^{[Dth 1719A]}, but was 48.

Seven weeks after Elena's death, Giacomo and Domenica wed. This came after they were granted dispensation on October 11 for the impediment of the third and fourth degrees of affinity (i.e., they were related by marriage, rather than by blood, which suggests that Domenica and the late Elena may have been related somehow). Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Jr.) and Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi.^{[Mar 1719]} Domenica as 24 years old and Giacomo was 40.

Domenica (Pozzi) Bonetti died seven weeks after her wedding at the family home in Giumaglio on December 17, 1719. She had apparently been gravely ill for 11 days or more as she had confessed on the 6th and given her last rites (the Viaticum and anointment) on the 7th. Domenica was buried the day after her death in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was only 24 years old.^{[Dth 1719B]}

After Domenica

Four months later, Giacomo remarried again to a woman of the same name--Domenica Pozzi. Her relationship to the late Domenica is not known, but Giacomo and Domenica were granted dispensation for the fourth degree of affinity (presumably this Domenica was also related to either of Giacomo's previous wives) and for the third degree of consanguinity in two lines (i.e., they were second cousins twice by two different sets of ancestors). Their wedding was on April 13, 1720, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and recorded witnesses were Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Jr.) (as before) and Giovanni Pietro Sartori^{2 [Mar 1720]}, godfather to the late Domenica, as above, and brother-in-law to the late Domenica. Giacomo was 40 years old and Domenica 18.

Giacomo and Domenica went on to have four children, only one of whom (Maria Domenica (Bonetti) Lafranchi) is known to have gone on to marry and have children. In 1741 the family was recorded as Giacomo, age 60 (actually just 6 days short of his 62nd birthday); Domenica, age 40 (actually 39); and children Giuseppe Antonio, age 7, and Maria (presumably Maria Domenica), age 4.^{[Cen 1741]}

Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti died sometime between the 1741 and 1748 parish censuses.^{[Cen 1741,1748]} He would have been in his 60s. Domenica afterward lived with her younger sister Maria Antonia^{[Bap 1748]} and later died on January 23, 1752, at her home. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Domenica was reported to be "about 52 years" old^{[Dth 1752]}, but had just turned 50 three week before.
