Maria Maddalena POZZI (~1644-1679)

C1. Maria Maddalena Pozzi was born about 1644, likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She married Giovanni Adami (Sr.) and had as many as eight children:

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Most of the Adami children were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22^{[Con 1677A]}, while daughter Anna Maria was recorded to have been confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31^{[Con 1677B]} and son Giovanni (Jr.) was recorded to have been confirmed on May 22 but listed both locations. (Many of the records were back-entered as much as 18 months after the fact.) In birth order, their godparents were named as follows: Domenica's was Maria Cerini; Giovanna's was Domenica Sartori; Giovanni's was Battista Delnotaro/Mogius of Coglio; Anna Maria's was Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi; Guglielmo's was Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, likely his maternal uncle; and Giacomo's was Giovanni Antonio Pozzi.^{[Con 1677A-B]}

Maria Maddalena (Pozzi) Adami died on December 8, 1679, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maddalena was recored to be 35 years old.^{[Dth 1679]}

Giovanni apparently did not remarry after Maddalena's death despite having six or seven children between the ages of 20 months and 18 years. In the first parish census of 1692, Giovanni was enumerated with children Giovanni, (Anna) Maria, Giacomo, and Apollonia.^{[Cen 1692]} His eldest three daughters had all married. What became of son Guglielmo is not known. The same four children remained with Giovanni through 1698.^{[Cen 1698]}

Giovanni Adami died on December 31, 1699, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Giovanni was recorded to be "about 60 years" old.^{[Dth 1699]}

Giovanna POZZI (MARCHESE)²(~1649-1714)

C2. Giovanna Pozzi² was born about 1649, likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She married Giovanni Terini/Marchese (II)², who, in view of her 13-year age difference with Giovanni, may have had a son from an earlier marriage. She and Giovanni had as many as seven children together:

During Giovanni's life, his family name was recorded as Terini, but by 1690 the name Marchese appeared among his children, alternating or even being listed together with Terini through 1724, after which the name settled on Marchese.

In the last week of May 1677, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogo Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. The Marchese family was confirmed in Maggia and at that event, the following sponsoring godparents were named for each:

• Giovanni (II)²: Don Giovanni Battista Franzoni of Cevio;
• Giovanna²: Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi;
• Giacomo: the Very Rev. Dom. Ercole Franzoni, Pastor of Cevio;
• Giovanni (III): Don Giuseppe Franzoni of Cevio;
• Antonio: Giacomo Ianzini;
• Carlo: Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Giovanna's younger brother;
• Domenica: Mrs. Giacomina (Sartori) Pozzi, wife of Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and therefore Giovanna's sister-in-law; and
• Anna Maria: Catterina Pozzi.

Notably, son Giacomo's parents were not recorded, in contrast to that of his siblings. He was enumerated following his apparent father and in birth order before his siblings, but this may suggest he was from a previous marriage.^{[Con 1677]} This omission calls attention to the fact that his mother (or stepmother) Giovanna Pozzi² was about 13 years younger than his father and would have been about 14 years old at the time of Giacomo's birth. Furthermore, there is about a five-year gap between Giacomo's birth and that of his next younger brother Giovanni (III).

Giacomo Marchese (recorded as Giacomo Terini) died on August 13, 1683, when he fell from crags at Barsona (unlocated) and suddenly died. He was 20 years old. Giacomo was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1683]}

Giovanni Marchese (II) died on Christmas Day, December 25, 1686, at his home Giumaglio. He was reported to be "about 50 years" old and was buried the following day in cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1686]}

Giovanna continued on for as much as another 27 years. In 1692 she was recorded as a 42-year-old widow with five children (all but youngest Catterina²), of whom Giovanni (Jr.) was named as the head of household.^{[Cen 1692]}

Six years later, Antonio, Domenica, and Anna had all left home but Catterina, age 12, was present, and Giovanni (Jr.) had wed.^{[Cen 1698]} Giovanni's (Jr.) 1-year old daughter joined the family by 1702.^{[Cen 1702,1703]}

Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Marchese was not recorded with her son Giovanni in 1709^{[Cen 1709]}, but likely died on January 14, 1714, at her home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be "about 63 years" old. Giovanna was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1714]}

Apollonia (POZZI) DEL NOTARO (->1684)

C3. Apollonia Pozzi was the daughter of a Giovanni Pozzi, presumably our ancestor. She married Giovanni Battista Delnotaro of Coglio on February 18, 1676, in Giumaglio. They had at least three children:

Prior to her marriage, Apollonia was named as godmother to likely niece Maria Domenica Terini (Marchese)^{[Bap 1672A]}; likely nephew Giovanni Guglielmo Adami^{[Bap 1672B]}; Maria Rusca (Giovanotti)^{[Bap 1673]}; Giovanni Antonio Ianzi^{[Bap 1674A]}; and Antonio Guglielmetti (III) of Coglio.^{[Bap 1674B]}

Apollonia and Battista married on February 18, 1676, at the Church of of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., third cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not known). Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Cerini, Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, and Giacomo Sartori.^{[Mar 1676]}

Apollonia and Battista chose the following godparents for their children:

• Antonio: Don Giovanni Pozzi and Maria Delnotaro^{[Bap 1677]};
• Giovanni: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Jr.) and Mrs. Giacomina Pozzi, both of Giumaglio^{[Bap 1681]}; and
• Domenica: Antonio Caneverino and Catterina Delnotaro, both of Coglio.^{[Bap 1684]}

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Apollonia's family was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia, at which time she was named (curiously as "the wife of Antonio Delnotaro of Coglio") as godmother to likely niece Domenica Pozzi.^{[Con 1677]}

The newliweds likely lived in Coglio as Apollonia no longer appeared in the parish records of Giumaglio afterward, except for Battista, whom sister Maddalena named as godfather to daughter Apollonia, who was apparently named her sister.^{[Bap 1678]} Apollonia may have gone on to remarry to Don Giovanni Pozzi in April 1686.

Giovanni Giacomo POZZI (~1652-1720)

C4. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi was born about 1652, likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He first married Giacomina Sartori in 1676, but they are not known to have had any children during their 13-year marriage. Three months after Giacomina's death, Giacomo remarried to Giovanna Maria Bassi of Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. They had as many as eight children together over their 26-year marriage:

Giacomo and Giacomina wed on April 24, 1676, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediments of consanguinity (i.e., cousins) in two lines: one to the third and fourth degrees (i.e., second cousins, once removed) and the other to the fourth degree (i.e. third cousins). The exact connections of their relationships are not yet known. Recorded witnesses were Giacomo Pozzi, Gaspare Gaspari, and Giovanni Giacomo Ianzini.^{[Mar 1676]}

Giacomo was named as godfather to 12 children in the parish. He was named to three before he married, eight during his marriage to Giacomina, and one during his marriage to Maria. His godchildren were: Giovanni Agostino Pozzi^{[Bap 1672]}; godfather and apparent namesake to nephew Giovanni Giacomo Adami^{[Bap 1675A]}; Felice Lesina^{[Bap 1675B]}; Giovanna Maria Mazzini^{[Bap 1676]}; Giacomina Rosa Pozzi^{[Bap 1679]}; Giovanni Stolfi^{[Bap 1681]}; godfather and perhaps partial namesake of Giovanni Giacomo Lesina^{[Bap 1682]}; Giacomina Pozzi^{[Bap 1686A]}; Silvestro Pozzi^{[Bap 1686B]}; grandniece Maria Giovanotti^{[Bap 1687]}; Giovanna Rossetti^{[Bap 1689]}; and grandnephew Giovanni Antonio Rossetti.^{[Bap 1690]}

In turn, Giacomo was named as the sponsoring godfather to five parishioners: Giacomo Cerini; nephew Carlo Maria Marchese; Giacomo Pozzi; nephew Giovanni Guglielmo Adami; and Angelo Pozzi. Giacomina was named as godmother to Giacomo's niece Maria Domenica Marchese.^{[Con 1677]}

Giacomina (Sartori) Pozzi died on December 2, 1689, in her home in Giumaglio. She was about 32 years old. Giacomina was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1689]} She and Giacomo had been married 13 years.

Three months after Giacomina's death, Giacomo apparently (correlation not fully confirmed) remarried to (Giovanna) Maria Bassi of Someo on March 6, 1690, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the third and fourth degrees of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood). Recorded witnesses were Carlo Antonio Pozzi, Giovanni Cerini, and Giacomo Ianzi.^{[Mar 1690]}

Giacomo and Maria chose the following godparents for their children:

In turn, Maria was named as godmother to Giovanni Giacomo Rusca (Giovanotti)^{[Bap 1692]} and Maria Pozzi.^{[Bap 1693B]}

The parish censuses of the time show that Maria's likely younger sister Catterina married Giovanni Pietro Pozzi, the son of an elder Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, by 1692 and was enumerated near Giacomo and Maria. Enumerated between the two households were Francesco and Lucrezia Pozzi. To confuse matters more, Francesco was the son of a deceased Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi. In 1692, Giacomo, Maria, and one-year-old son Antonio lived with Giacomo's 75-year-old father.^{[Cen 1692]}

Giacomo's father died in 1695 and by 1698 children Giovanni and Giovann(i) Maria joined the family.^{[Cen 1698]} Come 1702, daughter Domenica was added to the family (making no mention of the two infant sons who died), and a 13-year-old servant girl named Giovanna Cerini was added, but died soon before or after the census was completed.^{[Cen 1702]} Other than the addition of daughter Antonia, no further changes were noted through 1709.^{[Cen 1703, 1709]}

Maria's apparent sister Catterina (Bassi) Pozzi, as noted above, attended as midwife to the birth of Giacomo and Maria's daughter Antonia, and because of fear that the Antonia might die, performed an emergency baptism on the child.^{[Bap 1706]}

(Giovanna) Maria (Bassi) Pozzi died on May 28, 1716, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was recorded to be "about 46 years" old, but may have been in her early 50s. Curiously, she was identified as Giacomo's "former wife" (olim uxor), but he died four years later^{[Dth 1716]}

Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi died on January 26, 1720, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Giacomo was recorded to be "about 66 years."^{[Dth 1720]}

Giovanni Antonio POZZI (Sr.)^• (~1638-1688)

CX. Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Sr.)^• was likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He married Berta "Bertina" Pozzi^•, an apparent relation of unknown degree. Antonio was the son of a Giovanni who appears to have died sometime after 1680. Antonio and Berta had at least seven children:

The Pozzi family was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22^{[Con 1677A]}, except for Antonio, who was confirmed a week later at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31.^{[Con 1677B]} Their sponsoring godparents were named as follows: Antonio's was Giovanni Pietro Caporgno of Someo; Berta's was Giovanna Pedrotti; Antonio's (Jr.) was Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, the town doctor; Angelo's was Don Giovanni Battista (Franzoni) of Cevio; and Domenica's was Mrs. Apollonia (Pozzi) Delnotaro of Coglio. In turn, Antonio was named as sponsoring godfather to: Felice Lesina and Giovanni Giacomo Adami, both at Maggia; and Giovanni Antonio Lanzi/Cantoni (brother of Catterina Cantoni, above) and Simone Pozzi, both at Someo and with both records describing Antonio as a ferrier. Similarly, Berta was named as sponsoring godmother to Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Cerini (who later that same year became godmother to Berta's son Tonino) and Domenica Lesina (sister to Felice Lesina, above).^{[Con 1677A-B]}

Berta Pozzi died on September 6, 1686, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be "about 42 years" old. Berta was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1686]}

Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Sr.) ostensibly died after Berta and before his son Francesco, when Francesco's father was named as "the late Giovanni Antonio Pozzi"^{[Dth 1687]}, however, no death record is found for him in that tme period. The next likely candidate is was Giovanni Antonio Pozzi who did on November 5, 1688, at his home in Giumaglio. He as said to be "about 50 years" old. Antonio was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.^{[Dth 1688]}
