Lafranchi Family History, Part B-I
We descend from at least two of the three branches of the sizeable Lafranchi family of Coglio so these pages are divided into those three branches (Parts A, B, and C):
- Part A - Martino Lafranchi1A (<1613->1637)
- Part A-I - Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi (I)2A (1637->1688)
- Part A-II - Martino Lafranchi (Sr.)3A (1684-<1747) and
Domenica (Lafranchi) Guglielmetti3A (1688->1719) - Part A-III - Giovanni Battista Lafranchi4A (1732-<1785)
- Part B - Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi1 (-<1708)
- Part B-I - Giovanni Battista Lafranchi2 (1673->1740)
- Part B-II - Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (Sr.)3 (1690-~1749)
Giovanni Battista Lafranchi2 (1673->1729)
B1. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi2 was born on April 16, 1673, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were Don Giovanni Pozzi, notaio of Coglio, and Giacomina Lafranchi. Battista married Angela Pozzi of the neighboring village of Giumaglio and had at least two children. After Angela's death he remarried Maria (Perpetua) Pozzi3, also of Giumaglio, and had at least one son:

B13. | Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (Sr.)3 | (9) Feb 1708 | (1749) | (40) |
Wife Angela (as "Angelica") was in turn named as godmother to Giovanni Antonio Pozzi.[Bap 1694] This was the last record of her before her apparent death and Battista's remarriage.
Battista and Maria wed on June 19, 1700, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known); and for the impediments of the first and fourth degrees of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood) in two different lines, perhaps refering to relationships between Maria and Angela. Recorded witnesses were Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi, Maria's likely brother, and Giacomo Sartori.[Mar 1700]
Battista and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:
- Giacomo: Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Apollonia Guglielmetti[Bap 1690];
- Maria: Giovanni Lafranchi and Antonia Lafranchi[Bap 1693]; and
- Antonio3: Giacomo Pietro Pozzi• of Giumaglio, likely Maria's cousin, and Mrs. Angelica (Pozzi) Lafranchi, Maria's likely sister.[Bap 1708]
Maria (as "Maria Perpetua, [wife] of Giovanni Battista Lafranchi") was named as godmother to Giuseppe Fanora.[Bap 1713] This was the last record to name wither Maria or Battista while alive.
