Apollonia (LAFRANCHI) PEDROTTIΔ (1756-<1813)

A26JB.Maria Apollonia LafranchiΔ was born and baptized on November 8, 1756, in Coglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was preceded by an elder sister of the same name who was born to her father's first wife in 1752 and died young. They were likely named for their paternal grandmother. Apollonia's godparents were named as Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (II) and Mrs. Maria Domenica (Lafranchi) Delnotaro[Bap 1756], her father's cousin. Her mother died and her father remarried by the time she was 10 years old.

Apollonia married Giovanni Giacomo Pedrotti (Sr.) on April 29, 1773, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio.[Mar 1773] They were both 16 years old. Apollonia and Giacomo had as many as seven children. After Apollonia's death, Giacomo remarried to Maria Anna Bazzi of Cerentino and had one more daughter:

Recorded witnesses to Apollonia's and Giacomo's marriage were Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (II), Apollonia's godfather, and Giovanni Antonio Caneverini.[Mar 1773]

Apollonia and Giacomo chose the following godparent for their children:

  1. Giuseppe: no godparents recorded[Bap 1775];
  2. Maria Anna (elder): Don Carlo Antonio Pozzi and Maria Anna Bonetti[Bap 1777];
  3. Domenica: Giovanni Pietro Cerini, Giacomo's cousin, and Mrs. Maria Domenica (Stolfi) Pedrotti[Bap 1778], Giacomo's sister-in-law;
  4. Maria Anna (younger): Giuseppe Tomasini of Lodano and Mrs. Maria Anna (Piezzi) Pedrotti[Bap 1780], Giacomo's sister-in-law;
  5. Gianantonio: Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi, Apollonia's younger brother, and Mrs. Maria Domenica (Pozzi) Pedrotti[Bap 1783,1784A];
  6. Battista: no baptism record found in Giumaglio[Cen 1795]; and
  7. Giacomo (Jr.): Giovanni Felice Pedrotti, Giacomo's younger brother, and Mrs. Maria Domenica (Pozzi) Pedrotti (as above).[Bap 1791]

August 2016Apollonia was in turn named as godmother to Giovanni Battista Gasparini[Bap 1776], Giacomo's third cousin; Giovanni Antonio Maria Cerini[Bap 1784B,1785B], Giacomo's cousin; nephew Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[Bap 1786]; and Maria Anna Gasparini.[Bap 1802]

August 2016Giacomo was named as godfather to second cousin Maria Anna Giovanotti[Bap 1776]; Giovanni Antonio Piezzi[Bap 1779]; Giovanni Giacomo Cerini[Bap 1785A], Apollonia's baby half-brother; cousin Pietro Antonio Pedrotti[Bap 1787A]; Giovanni Giacomo Delnotaro[Bap 1787B]; Maria Domenica Lafranchi[Bap 1794A], Apollonia's niece; cousin Giuseppe Cerini[Bap 1794B]; and niece Maria Innocenza Cerini.[Bap 1795]

Three years after their marriage, the young Pedrotti family was comprised of Giacomo, Apollonia, infant son Giuseppe, and Giacomo's younger brother Giovanni Felice Pedrotti.[Cen 1776]

In 1795, the Pedrotti family comprised Giacomo, Apollonia, and five children (all except for daughters Maria Anna and Domenica, who died in infancy). August 2016Son Giuseppe's wife Maria Caterina Lesina was added afterward.[Cen 1795]

August 2016Maria Apollonia (Lafranchi) Pedrotti died sometime between 1802 and 1813. She was in her late 40s or early 50.

During the Napoleonic Era (1798-1815), Emperor Napoleon ordered a census that named every male, regardless of age, in 1808. The Pedrotti men recorded were Giacomo, age 51, married; son Giuseppe, age 32, married; Gianantonio, age 23, married and absent; and Giovanni Giacomo, age 16 and absent.[Cen 1808]

After Apollonia

August 2016Giacomo remarried to Maria Anna Bazzi of Cerentino, 20 kilometers upriver and along the Rovana di Campo, by 1813.

The Pedrotti family in 1817 was comprised of Giacomo, age 61; Maria Anna, age 43; and daughter Anna Maria, age 3.[Cen 1817]

Maria Anna (Bazzi) Pedrotti died on November 14, 1833, in the family home in Giumaglio. She was reportedly 60 years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1833]

Giovanni Giacomo Pedrotti (Sr.) died 8 months after Maria Anna on July 13, 1834, in Giumaglio at the age of 77. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1834]

Giovanni Francesco LAFRANCHI (1759-<1829)

A26JC.Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi was born in Coglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, on the night of October 11, 1759 and baptized the following day. His godparents were named as Giovanni Antonio Pedrotti and Mrs. Mariangela (Lucchini) Pozzi, the wife of Giovanni Francesco Pozzi, his apparent namesake.[Bap 1759] Francesco's mother died and his father remarried by the time he was 7 years old.

August 2016Francesco married Angiola Margherita Caneverini on February 11, 1782, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. They had as many as five children:

A26JC1. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi 2 May 1786 (1831-1840) (44-54)
A26JC2. Maria Anna Lafranchi 24 Mar 1789 --  --

A26JC5. Angiola Maria Margherita Lafranchi 4 Oct 1798 (> 1843) (> 45)

Recorded witnesses to Francesco's and Margherita's marriage were Giovanni Battista Lafranchi4, Francesco's father, and Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi.[Mar 1782]

August 2016Francesco and Margherita chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Battista: Giacomo Lafranchi, Margherita's brother-in-law, and Mrs. Apollonia (Lafranchi) Pedrotti, Francesco's elder sister and husband of Giovanni Giacomo Pedrotti, son of Francesco's godfather[Bap 1786];
  2. Maria Anna: Giovanni David Caneverini, Francesco's brother-in-law and Margherita's cousin, and Mrs. Maria Orsola Morelli of Linescio[Bap 1789A];
  3. Giacomo: Giovanni Antonio Caneverini, Margherita's elder half-brother, and Mrs. Teresia (Galeazzi) Lafranchi[Bap 1791B], wife of Giacomo Lafranchi, above;
  4. Domenica: Giovanni Giacomo Pedrotti (above) and Donna Anna Maria (Franzoni) Pozzi[Bap 1794]; and
  5. Margherita: Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi, Francesco's younger half-brother, and Mrs. Apollonia (Caneverini) Piezzi, Margherita's niece.[Bap 1798B]

August 2016Francesco in turn was named as godfather to nephew Giovanni Antonio Pedrotti[Bap 1783,1784]; Giuseppe Antonio Caneverini[Bap 1785], Margherita's nephew; niece Anna Maria Caneverini[Bap 1789]; Giovanna Maria Lafranchi[Cen 1791A]; nephew Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[Bap 1798]; and Antonio Francesco Bernardo Lafranchi.[Bap 1811]

August 2016Francesco also served as witness to the marriages of half-sister Caterina Lafranchi to Giovanni David Caneverini[Mar 1788] and to David's later remarriage to Maria Domenica Pozzi after his sister's death.[Mar 1794]

August 2016Before their marriage, Margherita was named as godmother to Giovanni Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1775]; Giovanni Antonio Delnotaro (Jr.)[Bap 1775A]; niece Maria Margherita Caneverini[Bap 1781]; and after her marriage to Maria Margherita Delnotaro[Bap 1787]; Maria Caterina Guglielmetti[Bap 1790]; and Maria Domenica Lafranchi.[Bap 1796]

August 2016Margherita was also an approved midwife and was recorded to have performed emergency baptisms at the births of Giovanni Battista Caneverini[Bap 1791C], Francesco's nephew; twins Maria Caterina and Giuseppe Antonio Lafranchi[Bap 1803A,1803B]; and Giovanni Antonio Maria Battista Pozzi.[Bap 1804]

During the Napoleonic Era (1798-1815), Emperor Napoleon ordered a census that named every male, regardless of age, in 1808. The Lafranchi males recorded were Giovanni Francesco, age 48, son Giovanni Battista, age 21, and son Giovanni Giacomo, age 16, who was noted as being humpbacked (gobbo).[Cen 1808]

Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi likely died between 1825 and 1829 while in his late 60s.[Bap 1829]

Caterina (LAFRANCHI) CANEVERINI (1768-~1793)

A26JD.Maria Caterina Lafranchi was born and baptized on January 9, 1768, in Coglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godfather was named as Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (II), her mother's paternal uncle and the godfather to her eldest surviving half-sister Apollonia. Her godmother and apparent namesake was Maria Caterina Caneverini[Bap 1768], her second cousin. Caterina's mother died and her father remarried when she was 6 years old.

Caterina married Giovanni (Luigi) Davide Caneverini on April 2, 1788, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio.[Mar 1788] August 2016They had three children before Caterina's early death and Davide fathered another four after he remarried the widow Maria Domenica (Pozzi) Lafranchi, who, not only had the same name as Caterina's late mother but was her first cousin. Their blended family

-- Marianna Caneverini 22 Aug 1798 (> 1820) (> 21)
-- Maria Margherita Caneverini 24 Feb 1802 --  --

Recorded witnesses to Caterina's and Davide's marriage were Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi, Caterina's elder half-brother, and Giovanni Antonio Caneverini, David's cousin.[Mar 1788]

Caterina and Davide chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Anna Maria: Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi, Caterina's elder half-brother, and Maria Caterina Caneverini[Bap 1789B], Davide's younger half-sister;
  2. Battista: Giacomo Pieto Adami, likely Caterina's second cousin, and Maria Apollonia Pozzi[Bap 1791], also Caterina's cousin; and
  3. Caterina Innocenza: Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (III), Caterina's cousin, and Maria Innocenza Barbara Gagliardi of Prato.[Bap 1793]

Son Giovanni Battista may have died in infancy as midwife Mrs. Margherita (Caneverini) Lafranchi, Caterina's sister-in-law and Davide's cousin, had to perform an emergency baptism on him at his birth.[Bap 1791]

Caterina does not appear to have been named as godmother to any parish children; however, Davide was named as godfather to cousin Giovanni Giacomo Fidele Caneverini[Bap 1788] and cousin Maria Anna Lafranchi.[Bap 1789A]

Caterina apparently died during or following soon after the birth of daughter Caterina Innocenza. She was only 25 years old.

After Caterina

Davide remarried the following spring on April 19, 1794, to Maria Domenica Pozzi, the widow of Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo. She was the daughter of Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (II), Caterina's godfather and maternal great-uncle, and had two sons during her first marriage. Dispensation was granted for the impediment of the second and third degree of affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood), which refers to the fact that Caterina and Domenica were first cousins, once removed. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Giacomo Delnotaro and Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi[Mar 1794], Caterina's elder half-brother (as he had been to the first marriage).

Davide and Domenica chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Davide: Giacomo Lincei Ordini of Fusio, apparently by proxy of Francesco Pozzi (III), Domenica's elder brother, and Donna Anna Maria (Franzoni) Pozzi, the wife of Domenica's cousin, Don Chancellor Carlo Antonio Pozzi[Bap 1795];
  2. Giovann(a/i): Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi, the husband of Davide's late cousin, and Giovanna Maria Pozzi[Bap 1796], wife of Davide's cousin;
  3. Marianna: Giovanni Leone of Cerentino, who would become Davide's brother-in-law the following year, and Mrs. Marianna Pometta of Broglio[Bap 1798]; and
  4. Margherita: Pietro Antonio Caneverini (likely referring to Davide's younger half-brother Pietro Francesco) and Mrs. Giovanna (Delnotaro) Guglielmetti.[Bap 1802]

September 2016Davide was a recorded witness to the marriages of widower Francesco Pozzi (II) and the widow Mrs. Maria Innocenza Pajoni of Menzonio, Val Lavizzara[Mar 1799A]; Giovanni Antonio Tognazzini of Someo and Maria Elena Delnotaro[Mar 1799B]; Giuseppe Pozzi and Maria Domenica Lafranchi[Mar 1812A]; likely daughter Caterina Caneverini and Giovanni Pietro Giumini of Giumaglio.[Mar 1812B]

Giovanni Davide and his 13-year-old son Giovanni Davide were recorded in the 1808 census of the Napoleonic Era (1798-1815), during which Emperor Napoleon ordered a census that named every male, regardless of age.[Cen 1808]

Giovanni Antonio Maria LAFRANCHI (1776-<1845)

A26JH.Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi was born in Coglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, on October 13, 1776. His godfather and apparent namesake was Giovanni Antonio Delnotaro and his godmother was named as Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Caneverini) Guglielmetti.[Bap 1776] Antonio married Maria Anastasia of Linescio, 13 kilometers upriver and along the Rovana di Campo, on February 6, 1797, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio.[Mar 1797B] They had as many as eight children before her apparent death. Afterward, Giovanni Antonio married to Maria Caterina Pedrotti of the neighboring town of Giumaglio, who was about 15 years younger, and had two more children:

Antonio in kind was named as godfather to niece Angiola Maria Margherita Lafranchi[Bap 1798B]; niece Maria Giacomina Cerini[Bap 1799]; and Giuseppe Antonio Lafranchi.[Bap 1803]

Antonio was also recorded as a witness to the marriages of Pietro Antonio Maria Lafranchi and cousin Maria Caterina Caneverini[Mar 1797], who married a week before Antonio and Anastasia; Giuseppe Delnotaro and Maria Lucia Vacchini[Mar 1803]; and Maria Caterina Delnotaro of Coglio and Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti of Someo.[Mar 1805]

During the Napoleonic Era (1798-1815), Emperor Napoleon ordered a census that named every male, regardless of age, in 1808. Giovanni Antonio, age 32, was recorded with sons Giovanni Battista, age 9, and Carlo Antonio, age 1.[Cen 1808]

Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi was first recorded as deceased at the marriage of his daughter Margherita in 1845.[Mar 1845] As such he likely died between 1840 and 1845 and would have been in his mid-60s.

Maria Caterina (LAFRANCHI) CERINI5 (1780-1847)

A26JJ. Maria Caterina Domenica Lafranchi5 was born on January 21, 1780, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. She had an elder half-sister named Maria Caterina and an another sister of the same mother who was born and died a year and a half before she was. Her godfather was named as Martino Zamaroni of Avegno, her maternal uncle, and her godmother and apparent namesake was Mrs. Maria Caterina (Caneverini) Pozzi[Bap 1780], her second cousin and the godmother to Caterina's elder half-sister.

Caterina married Pietro Antonio Cerini6 of the neighboring village of Giumaglio by 1795.[Cen 1795] He appears to have been her stepbrother and at that time they were 14 and 25 years old. Caterina and Pietro had at least six children together:[Cen 1817,1843]

Birth Date Discrepancy
Caterina was clearly identified as the daughter of the late Giovanni Battista Lafranchi and as Pietro's wife while she and Pietro lived with his father and her widowed mother, Maria Giacomina Zamaroni.[Cen 1795] In the 1843 parish census her birth date is given as November 5 or 8, 1780. How this date came about, in contrast to her baptism record, is inexplicable.

Caterina and Pietro lived with Pietro's father and Caterina's widowed mother in 1795--which made them stepsiblings. Afterward their daughters Giacomina and Perpetua were appended to the household.[Cen 1795]

Pietro and Caterina chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Innocenza: Giovanni Giacomo Pedrotti, Caterina's brother-in-law, and Mrs. Maria Innocenza (Cerini) Pozzi, Pietro's elder sister[Bap 1795];
  2. Giacomina: Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi, Caterina's brother, and Marianna Giumini[Bap 1799];
  3. Anna Maria: Giovanni Antonio Cerini, Pietro's second cousin, and Mrs. Maria Barbara (Martinosa) Pozzi[Bap 1800B];
  4. Maria Anna: Giovanni Giacomo Cerini, Pietro's half-brother, and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Gasparini[Bap 1802];
  5. Felice: Pietro Antonio Caneverini of Coglio and Maria Pozzi, perhaps Pietro's niece or step-niece[Bap 1805]; and
  6. Giuseppe: no baptism record available.

During the Napoleonic Era (1798-1815), Emperor Napoleon ordered a census that named every male, regardless of age, in 1808. The Pedrotti's recorded were Pietro Antonio, age 38, married; Pietro Antonio, age 2; and curiously Pietro's nephew, Antonio Marcello, age 5.[Cen 1808] Antonio Marcello's inclusion perhaps suggests that he had been adopted. After his brother's death, baptism records that mentioned nephews Giacomo Pietro6 and Antonio Marcello misrecorded Pietro Antonio as their father on six occasions between 1826 and 1837.

August 2016Caterina was named as godmother to Giacomo Pietro Gasparini[Bap 1797], a grandnephew to Pietro's father's first wife; godmother and namesake to niece Maria Caterina Lafranchi[Bap 1800A]; and Pietro's nephew Giovanni Antonio Cerini.[Bap 1806]

One of the elder two daughters, "Maria Jacoba," died on November 13, 1827, at the age of "about 30 years." She was buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio.[Dth 1827]

Maria Caterina (Lafranchi) Cerini died on May 16, 1847, at their home in Giumaglio and buried the following day at the cemetery at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was said to be 73 years old.[Dth 1847]

Pietro Antonio Cerini died on January 12, 1859, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the parish cemetery at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1859] He was 89 years old and the oldest resident of Giumaglio at the time, following Giovanni Domenico Piezzi, who died three years earlier and had been married to his sister-in-law Maria Teresia (Giumini) Cerini's sister.
