Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Maria Maddalena CERINI (1796->1817)

July 20131173231. Maria Maddalena Cerini was born and baptized on May 28, 1796,[Bap 1796] or perhaps that date in 1793,[Cen 1795] in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godfather was her paternal uncle Giovanni Maria Guglielmetti of the neighboring town of Coglio and her godmother was her maternal aunt Maria Giumini.[Bap 1796]

Maddalena was last recorded in parish records of Giumaglio in the 1817 parish census in which she was enumerated with her widowed mother and four younger siblings. She was about 20 years old at the time.[Bap 1817]

Maria Margherita (CERINI) MUSCIO (1798-1837)

July 20131173232. Maria Margherita Cerini was born and baptized on April 15, 1798,[Bap 1798] or perhaps that date in 1795,[Cen 1795] in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godmother and apparent namesake was Mrs. Margherita Guglielmetti, the wife of Giovanni Maria Guglielmetti, her paternal half-uncle, who was godfather to Margherita's elder sister Maria. Her godfather was Giovanni Domenico Piezzi, her maternal uncle by marriage.[Bap 1798] August 2017Margherita married Francesco Muscio of Someo between 1817 and 1820. She and Francesco had at least three children:

11732321. Maria Domenica Muscio (1819-1820) 30 Aug 1835 (15)
11732322. Giovanni Antonio Muscio 12 Jun 1823 --  --
11732323. Giacomo Pietro Muscio 3 Jul 1825 --  --

Margherita was last recorded in parish records of Giumaglio in the 1817 parish census in which she was enumerated with her widowed mother and four siblings.[Bap 1817]

August 2017Margherita and Francesco chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Domenica:
  2. Antonio: Giovanni Antonio Cerini (Jr.), Margherita's apparent brother (presumably referring to Antonio Marcello), and Maria Caterina Muscio, wife of Giovanni Antonio Muscio[Bap 1823]; and
  3. Giacomo Pietro: Giacomo Pietro Cerini7, Margherita's younger brother, and Mrs. Maria Caterina Muscio, widow of the late Pietro Muscio.[Bap 1825]

Margherita was named as godmother to cousin Giuseppe Bonetti.[Bap 1820]

Maria Margherita (Cerini) Muscio died on March 1, 1837, at her home in Someo. Her demise came quickly and received her last rites the day of her death. She was buried on March 3 in the church cemetery in Someo. She was reported to be "about 40 years old[Dth 1837], but was either 37 or 41.

Giacomo Pietro CERINI7 (1800-1860)

1173233. Giacomo Pietro Cerini7 was born on May 8, 1800, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were Giacomo Pietro Adami, his apparent namesake, and Cattarina Sartori, a maternal cousin.[Bap 1800] He married Giovanna Maria Tognazzini4 in the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on February 16, 1824.[Mar 1824] They had as many as 12 children:

1173233I. Paolo Celestino Cerini 11 Jun 1849 29 Aug 1851 (2)

The parish census of 1817 recorded that Giacomo Pietro may have been born on June 7, 1796[Cen 1817], however, three subsequent censuses all state he was born on May 8, 1800.

Pietro and Giovanna were married in the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on February 16, 1824. He was about 23 years old and she 19. Witnesses to their marriage were Giacomo Pietro Piezzi, who was likely the one who was his cousin on their mothers' sides, and Giovanni Giacomo Coppi of Someo.[Mar 1824]

Pietro and Giovanna chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Teresa/Domenica: Domenico Tognazzi of Riveo and Maria Cerini (correlation unknown)[Bap 1826];
  2. Giovanni Pietro: Pietro Torneri (II), husband to Giacomo Pietro's cousin Maria (Giumini) Torneri, and Mrs. Maria (Piezzi) Cerini, Giacomo Pietro's sister-in-law[Bap 1828];
  3. Pietro (Antonio): Pietro Torneri (II), as above, and Mrs. Marianna (Piezzi) Adami, Giacomo Pietro's cousin[Bap 1830];
  4. Giacomo: Giacomo Cerini (correlation unknown) and Mrs. Marianna (Giumini) Lafranchi, Giacomo Pietro's maternal aunt[Bap 1832B];
  5. Battista8: Marcello Lafranchi, likely Giacomo Pietro's uncle, and Mrs. Maria (Piezzi) Cerini, as above[Bap 1834];
  6. Paolo Celestino (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Righetti of Someo and Caterina Giumini, Giacomo Pietro's cousin[Bap 1836];
  7. Marianna: Battista (family name illegible) of Bergamo, Italy, and Maddalena Giumini, Giacomo Pietro's cousin[Bap 1840];
  8. Margherita: Pietro Antonio Tognazzini of Someo and Margherita Lafranchi of Coglio, who was likely her namesake[Bap 1842];
  9. Caterina: Pietro Adami and the widow Mrs. Caterina Piezzi[Bap 1844];
  10. Carolina: Pietro Antonio Tognazzini of Someo and Carolina Pozzi, her apparent namesake[Bap 1847]; and
  11. Paolo Celestino (younger): Pietro Cerini (correlation unknown) and Maria Caterina Cerini, likely Giacomo Pietro's niece.[Bap 1849]

Pietro was in turn named as godfather to likely cousin Giacomo Bonetti of Someo[Bap 1822]; nephew Giacomo Pietro Muscio[Bap 1825B]; Giovanna's nephew Eustachio Tognazzini[Bap 1829]; and his niece Maria Teresa Assunta Cerini.[Bap 1832A] Giovanna was named as godmother to her niece Marianna Tognazzini.[Bap 1825A]

Their first daughter, Domenica, died on July 1, 1838, reportedly at the age of "about 16 years," however there are inconsistencies with her death record. The record states she was the daughter of "Giovanni Pietro Cerini," but none of the others had children in the early 1820s. While parish records for 1808 to 1826 are missing, the stated age puts her birth before Pietro and Giovanna's marriage, so it is possible that "Domenica" refers to daughter Teresa. As such she would have been 11 years old. Domenica was buried at the parish cemetery at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1838]

Eldest sons Giovanni Pietro and Pietro (Antonio) both took out loans on May 30, 1855, to travel to Australia. One, probably both, traveled aboard the Adèle[Gentilli 34], which departed Antwerp and arrived in Sydney on November 8, 1855. What became of Giovanni Pietro is unknown, but Pietro (Antonio) was natrualized and lived out the rest of his days in Victoria, Australia.[Gentilli 34]

Son Battista8 is said to have made at least two trips to California, apparently one in 1880, perhaps with his eldest son Pietro, but did not settle there permanently. Battista's children all eventually emigrated to America.

Giacomo Pietro Cerini died on September 26, 1860, in his home in Giumaglio. He was buried two days later in the cemetery at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was 60 years old.[Dth 1860] His son's death record later stated that Pietro was a laborer.[Dth 1904]

Giovanna Maria (Tognazzini) Cerini died 15 years later on January 31, 1876, at her home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the parish cemetery at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was 71 years old.[Dth 1876]

Antonio Maria Marcello CERINI (1802-1866)

1173234. Antonio Maria Marcello Cerini was born and baptized on October 9, 1802, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godfather and apparent namesake was Antonio Maria Marcello Lafranchi, his uncle by marriage to his matenal aunt, and Mrs. Marianna (Bonetti) Cerini, wife of Giacomo Pietro Cerini, his grandfather's second cousin.[Bap 1802] Antonio Marcello married Maria Giacomina Piezzi and had at least 10 children:

1173234A. Maria Cattarina Cerini 30 Oct 1829 --  --
1173234B. Maria Teresa Assunta Cerini 3 Mar 1832 --  --
1173234C. Giovanni Giacomo Cerini 27 Sep 1833 --  --
1173234D. Giuseppe Cerini 30 Sep 1835 (1848-1853) (12-18)
1173234E. Maria Angiola Tecla Cerini 23 Sep 1837 --  --
1173234F. Giovanni Giuseppe Cerini 5 Sep 1839 (<1843) (<4)
1173234G. Maria Lucia Cerini 30 Mar 1842 --  --
1173234H. Giuseppe Maria Cerini 3 Apr 1846 3 Mar 1851 (4)
1173234I. Marianna Rosa Cerini 14 Oct 1848 30 Sep 1864 (15)
1173234J. Giuseppe Cerini 25 Jun 1853 --  --

They may have been married on February 11, 1827, in Giumaglio, but the record incorrectly names the bride as "Maria Angela," yet correctly names her father, Giuseppe. Antonio is simply named as "Antonium of the late other Antonii Cerini."[Mar 1827]

August 2017Antonio Marcello and Giacomina chose the following godparents for their children:

Antonio Marcello, who at the time was recorded as "Giovanni Antonio," may have been named as godfather to nephew Giovanni Antonio Muscio[Bap 1823]; and was named as the godfather of Giacomina's nephew Giuseppe Vittorio Piezzi.[Bap 1853] Giacomina was named as the godmother of Antonio's nephew, Giovanni Pietro Cerini.[Bap 1828]

Eldest son Giacomo took out a loan of 1,000 francs in 1854 to emigrate to Australia.[Cheda 341] According to Gentilli, Giacomo may be the one who traveled aboard the Morning Star, which arrived in Melborne on August 21, 1854.[Gentilli 34] Later, Antonio took out a loan of 1,000 francs from Celestino Righetti, of nearby Someo, to repay his son's debt in 1861.[Cheda 341] Gentilli futher adds that this Giacomo worked as a miner at Wonderful Reef Mine near Heburn, Victoria, between 1871 and 1872.[Gentilli 34]

Antonio Maria Marcello Cerini died in his home in Giumaglio on December 19, 1866, at the age of 64. He was buried the following day in the cemetery at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1866]

Maria Angiola CERINI (1809-1849)

1173236. Maria Angiola Cerini was born on September 15, 1809, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. No baptism record for Angiola has been found to confirm that she was in fact Antonio and Teresa's daughter, because parish baptism records from 1809 until 1826 are lost to history.

She appears not to have ever married and lived with elder brother Giacomo Pietro3 at the time of her death in 1849.[Dth 1849,Reg ~1851]

Maria Angiola Cerini died on May 6, 1849, at her brother's home in Giumaglio. Interestingly, she was the first in a series of four deaths that month, however, no causes of death are disclosed. All four died at home and were between the ages of 16 and 64. Angiola was buried the following day at the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1849, Reg ~1851] She was 39 years old.

Maria Innocenza/Perpetua CERINI (1795)

1173241. Maria Innocenza/Perpetua Cerini was born and baptized on November 2, 1795, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. At her baptism she was christened as "Maria Innocentia," apparently named for her godmother and aunt Maria Innocenza (Cerini) Pozzi. Her godfather was Giovanni Giacomo Pedrotti, her uncle by marriage to her maternal aunt.[Bap 1795] She was afterward noted as "Maria Perpetua" and once as "Maria Giacoma Perpetua" in the church censuses.[Cen 1795, 1817] The name "Perpetua" is likely for her paternal grandmother, Maria Perpetua/Fortunata (Lafranchi) Cerini4.

Maria was last recorded in Giumaglio (as "Maria Giacoma Perpetua") in 1817 at the age of 21.[Cen 1817]

October 2017Maria likely married Eustachio Perinoni of Someo and died there on January 26, 1838. She was about 46 years old and was buried at the church cemetery in Someo the following day.[Dth 1838]

Eustachio may have gone on to remarry to Giovanni Maria Bonetti by 1846. Eustachio Perinoni fell from a tree and died about August 2, 1864.[Dth 1846] He was buried the morning of the 3rd in the church cemetery in Someo. Eustachio was reported to be 61 years old.[Dth 1864]

October 2017Suspected but unconfirmed children (based so far only on death records) include:

11732411. Margherita Perinoni (1816-1817) 14 May 1887 (70)
11732412. Maria Caterina Paolina Perinoni (Mar) 1834 21 May 1834 (2 mos.)

-- Giacomo Pietro Stefano Perinoni (2) Jan 1846 10 Jan 1846 ( 8 days)

Maria Giacomina CERINI (1799-1827)

1173242. Maria Giacomina Cerini was born and baptized on December 2, 1799, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were her maternal uncle Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi and Marianna Giumini[Bap 1799], possibly her mother's cousin. She appears not have wed.

Maria Giacomina Cerini (recorded as "Maria Giacoma") died on November 13, 1827, at the age of "about 30 years" (she was two weeks short of her 28th birthday). She was buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio.[Dth 1827]

Anna Maria CERINI (1800->1833)

1173243. Anna Maria Cerini was born and baptized on June 8, 1800, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were Giovanni Antonio Cerini, her grandfather's second cousin, and Mrs. Maria Barbara (Marinosa) Pozzi.[Bap 1800] Anna Maria (presumed to be this Anna Maria, the daughter of Pietro Antonio) married Michele Pedrazzini of the nearby town of Lodano on Monday, April 22, 1833, in Giumaglio. Witnesses were Giuseppe Piezzi and Giovanni Cerini.[Mar 1833]

The Pedrazzini newlyweds likely resided in Lodano.

Pietro Antonio Felice CERINI (1805-1875)

July 20131173245. Pietro Antonio Felice Cerini was born and baptized on May 20, 1805, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were Pietro Antonio Canaverini, of the neighboring town of Coglio, and Maria Pozzi, who was likely his paternal aunt's stepdaughter or daughter.[Bap 1805] Felice married Maria Maddalena Cerini, the daughter of Giuseppe Cerini, on November 27, 1832, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. No impediments were recorded, which indicates that either they were not of any known blood relationship or that such relationship was beyond that of second cousins. Witnesses to their marriage were Domenico Filippo Pozzi and Rodolfo Cerini, Maddelena's elder brother.[Mar 1832] Felice and Maddalena had at least five children, including a pair of twin daughters:

11732451. Pietro Antonio Cerini (4) Nov 1833 --  --
11732452. Giuseppe Lorenzo Cerini 9 Aug 1836 1906 (70)
11732453. Giovanni Cerini 1 Nov 1840 --  --
11732454. Marianna Cerini 15 Apr 1845 --  --
11732455. Maria Caterina Cerini 15 Apr 1845 --  --

Felice was godfather and apparently partial namesake to Marco Felice Cerini, the son of his wife's cousin, Giuseppe Gioacchino and Caterina (Giumini) Cerini[Bap 1837]; nephew Pietro Antonio Cerini[Bap 1842]; and perhaps grandniece Maria Annonziatta Cerini.[Bap 1865]

Feb 2014Son Giuseppe Lorenzo may have made as made as many as three or four trips to Victoria, Australia, before settling there permanently. His first emigration loan, under the name of "Felice di Felice" was for 1,000 francs in 1854. The following year, under the name "Giuseppe Lorenzo fu Pietro Antonio," he put up 500 francs of his own money (rather than take out a loan like most) and settled in Hepburn (1855-1856). Recorded as "Giuseppe di Pietro Antonio," he took out a third loan of 950 francs from Ponziano Rianda in 1858. Finally, according to Gentilli, he returned home in 1861 and afterward returned to Victoria, married, and settled for good in Irrewillipe, 172 kilometers southwest of Hepburn. He died there in 1906.[Cheda 341-342, Gentilli 34]

"New Cemetery"
The "new cemetery" ("cemeterio novo") was referenced between November 1868 and September 1874. It unclear as to what portion of the cemtery this refers to. Felice died after this period, but it is reasonably presumed he was buried in the same section as Maddalena.

Maria Maddalena Cerini died on December 3, 1872, in Giumaglio. She was interred two days later at the "new" cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was 58 years old, but reported to be 66 years old.[Dth 1872]

Felice Cerini died two years later on June 26, 1875, at his home in Giumaglio. He was interred the following day at the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was 70 years old.[Dth 1875]

Giuseppe CERINI7 (1809-1864)

1173246. Giuseppe (Maria) Cerini7 was born on April 3, 1809 or 1800, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He married Maria (Elisabetta) Strozzi, a native of Biasca in the Ticino river valley, two valleys over to the east of the Maggia river valley. They had at least five children:

11732461. Giuseppe Cerini (Jr.) 8 Nov 1838 --  --
11732462. Maria Orsola Cerini8 15 Dec 1839 18 Oct 1886 (46)
11732463. Pietro Antonio CeriniΔ 10 Oct 1842 12 Jul 1916 (73)
11732464. Giacomo Cerini 18 Feb 1846 --  --
11732465. Elisabetta Apollonia CeriniΔ 16 Sep 1848 --  --

August 2017Giuseppe and Maria chose the following godparents for their children:

Giuseppe Cerini reportedly died on May 7, 1864, after the birth of grandson Pietro[Bap 1863] and before the birth of granddaughter Annunziatta.[Bap 1865] He was 54 years old.

Maria (Elisabetta) (Strozzi) Cerini was found dead on October 18, 1886, perhaps at the age of 82.[Dth 1886]

Strozzi-Cerini DNA Analysis

Matrilineal DNA
As mtDNA is passed from mother to child, the T3 haplogroup traces Aurelia Cerini's maternal lineage, not that of her father's Cerini lineage. Therefore, Aurelia's mtDNA follows the female lineage up through her maternal ancestors, all resulting female descendants down from these maternal ancestors, and stopping at the sons of direct female descendants. This testing hopefully will reveal maternal ancestors of the Cerinis of Ticino Canton in Switzerland and possibly other branches found in California.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing Maria's great grandson by a direct female line, Dan Malugani, reveals a maternal lineage identified by Haplogroup T3. This haplogroup traces back from "Mitochondrial Eve" (mtDNA L) in the Ethiopia-Kenya region some 150,000-170,000 years ago. The line later departed East Africa some 80,000 years ago (mtDNA L3) and spread into Eurasia (Haplogroups N, R, and T) where it typifies paleolithic expansion of hunter-gatherers throughout Europe, the Near East, and even into India. About 10,000 years ago (Haplogroup T) they learned to domesticate plants and began settling, forming the world's first neolithic agriculture-based cultures. Their successful technology spread throughout Europe and the Near East but Haplogroup T is only found in about 20% of this region's populations.

Curiously, Hapologroup T3, one of several isolated subgroups after Haplogroup T began settling down, has been preliminarily associated with concentrations in Germany and the British Isles. This by no means implies Aurelia's mother was from these areas but that she at least shared ancestors with those who settled in these areas in more significant concentrations.
