Family Histories:

Lafranchi Family History, Part A-I

May 2017
A fire destroyed most Coglio parish records on January 24, 1745. Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi selectively reconstructed the baptism and marriage records in that year from other records and the testimony of parishioners. As such the majority of the information about Coglio before 1745 is from that reconstruction, except for a few records from the neighboring parish of Giumaglio. Death records are not available for Coglio until 1888 so deaths throughout are estimated.
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Martino LAFRANCHI (II) (1631-<1687)

A1.May 2016 Martino Lafranchi (II) was born on January 10, 1631, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the same day in Maggia, 3 kilometers downriver. His godparents were named as Giovanni Antonio Delnotaro and Margherita Lafranchi.[Bap 1631] Martino first married Sabata Pedrotti of the neighboring town of Giumaglio and had as many as five* children. He later married Domenica Marchese, also of Giumaglio, in Giumaglio, on February 1, 1673.[Mar 1673] They likely had one son together. All together Martino fathered as many as six children:

A11. Maria Lafranchi 3 Mar 1657 --  --
A12. Giovanni Lafranchi 23 Aug 1662 --  --
A13. Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi 19 Jan 1663 (> 1707) (> 44)
A14. Antonia Lafranchi 6 Jun 1666 (> 1693) (> 26)
A15. Giacomina Lafranchi 11 Dec 1669 --  --

A16. Martino Lafranchi (III) 6 Jan 1682 --  --

Martino and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:

Martino's Wives
May 2016The reconstructed baptism records named the mother of son Martino (II) as Sabata Pedrotti[Bap 1682], but given Martino's1 remarriage to Domenica Marchese in 1673, the reconstructed baptism record is likely in error.
  1. Maria: Giacomo Lafranchi and Maria Delnotaro[Bap 1657];
  2. Giovanni: Giovanni Battista Lafranchi and Maria Caneverini[Bap 1662];
  3. Giacomo: Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi2, Martino's younger brother, and Maria Delnotaro[Bap 1663];
  4. Antonia: Giovanni Battista Delnotaro and Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1666];
  5. Giacomina: Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi and Margherita Delnotaro[Bap 1669];
  6. Martino (III): Antonio Caneverini and Giacomina Delnotaro[Bap 1682];

Martino was in turn named as godfather to niece Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1677]; Giovanni Giacomo Piezzi[Bap 1680] of Giumaglo, perhaps a relative of Sabata's Pedrotti line, and Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (II)2C.[Bap 1685]

Sabata (Pedrotti) Lafranchi likely died between 1669 and 1673.[Mar 1673] She may have been in her 30s.

Martino and Domenica Marchese married on February 1, 1673, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Recorded witnesses were Carlo Pozzi, Giovanni Cerini, and Giovanni Pozzi, all of Giumaglio.[Mar 1673]

Martino Lafranchi died sometime between 1685[Bap 1685] and 1687.[Bap 1687] He was therefore likely in his mid-50s.

Giovanni Giacomo LAFRANCHI (I)2 (1637->1688)

A2.Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi (I)2 was born on June 17, 1637, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the same day in Maggia, 3 kilometers downriver. His godparents were named as Martino Lafranchi and Elena Lafranchi.[Bap 1637] He married Giacomina Giumini2 of the neighboring village of Giumaglio and had at had as many as eight children sons:

A27. Domenica Lafranchi3 4 Jan 1688 (> 1714) (> 26)

Giacomo and Giacomina chose the following godparents for their sons:

  1. Antonio: Giovanni Baptista Lafranchi and Margherita Giumini[Bap 1661];
  2. Maria: Martino Lafranchi (II), Giacomo's elder brother, and Maria Giumini[Bap 1667];
  3. Giacomo (II): Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Mrs. Apollonia (Pozzi) Delnotaro[Bap 1674];
  4. Giuseppe: Giacomo Pietro Cerini and Guglielma Guglielmetti[Bap 1677];
  5. Giacomina: Giovanni Baptista Delnotaro and Maria Delnotaro[Bap 1684];
  6. Martino: Giovanni Delnotaro and Mrs. Antonio Delnotaro[Bap 1685]; and
  7. Domenica: Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi and Mrs. Apollonia (Pozzi) Delnotaro.[Bap 1688]

Giacomo in turn was named as godfather and apparent namesake to nephew Giovanni GiacomoLafranchi.[Bap 1663]

The reconstructed parish records do not mention Giacomo and Giacomina after the birth of daughter Domenica in 1688.[Bap 1688]
