Giovanni Maria GUGLIELMETTI (1759-<1803)

C1121. April 2016Giovanni Maria Guglielmetti was born on 4 September 1759 in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. His godparents were named as Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi, Notaio of Giumaglio, and Mrs. Maria Catterina (Lafranchi) Delnotaro.[Bap 1759A] Giovanni married Giovanna Maria Caneverini on January 3, 1776, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio.[Mar 1776] They had one daughter. He appears to have later remarried to Margherita Guglielmetti on January 27, 1783, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo.[Mar 1783]

C11211. Marianna Perpetua Guglielmetti 23 Aug 1780 --  --

Before their marriage, Giovanni and Giovanna obtained permission to forgo the traditional three declarations. Despite both having Guglielmetti, Lafranchi, and Delnotaro ancestry, no impediment of consanguinity was identified, suggesting any relationship they had was more than four generations back. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Antonio Caneverini, Giovanna's likely brother, and Antonio Cerini5, Giovanni's stepfather.[Mar 1776] Giovanni was 16 years old and Giovanna was either 14 or 15.

June 2016Daughter Marianna Perpetua's baptism record is difficult to read, but it appears that her godparents were named as her maternal uncle Giovanni Antonio Caneverini and one of her mother's aunts, perhaps Maria Catterina Caneverini.[Bap 1780B]

June 2016Giovanni remarried to Margherita Guglielmetti on January 27, 1783, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo. Similarly to his first marriage, despite both having Delnotaro and Lafranchi ancestry, no impediments of consanguinity were identified, suggesting any relationship they had was more than four generations back. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (III), who was married to Margherita's elder sister, and Giuseppe Lafranchi[Bap 1783], Margherita's second cousin.

Giovanni was named as godfather to Maria Catterina Delnotaro[Bap 1780A], and interestingly, the child's godmother and cousin of the same name, Maria Catterina Delnotaro, two years later would marry Giovanni's stepfather, Antonio Cerini (V)5, after his mother died. He was godfather to Maria Catterina Guglielmetti[Bap 1790], wife Margherita's niece; and to younger half-brother Antonio Cerini's6 first child, Maria (Maddalena) Cerini[Bap 1796]

August 2016After their wedding, Margherita was named as godmother to nephew Giuseppe Pozzi[Bap 1783]; niece Maria Margherita Guglielmetti[Bap 1784]; cousin Maria Giacomina Delnotaro, along with her brother as godfather[Bap 1785]; nephew Giuseppe Francesco Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1793]; Maria Margherita Cerini, Giovanni's niece[Bap 1798]; and to Giovanni's cousin Maria Cattarina Lafranchi.[Bap 1803]

Giovanni Maria Guglielmetti died between 1798 and 1803.[Bap 1798,1803] He was in his late 30s or early 40s.

August 2016After Giovanni's death, Margherita may have remarried, but she was recorded as "Anna Maria, widow of the late Giovanni Maria Guglielmetti," when she married Giacomo Pietro Pozzi of Giumaglio on February 13, 1804, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo.[Mar 1804] This couple went on to have as many as six children.

6th Generation

Giovanni Battista LAFRANCHI (Jr.) (1797-1852)

C11482. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi (Jr.) was born on the night of January 5, 1797, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized that day. His godparents were named as Giuseppe Maria Cerini, his maternal uncle, and Mrs. Maria Giovanna (Lafranchi) Delnotaro, his father's cousin. Battista married Maria Domenica Lafranchi about April 1819, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio.[Mar 1819] She was of the Martino Lafranchi line and they were reported to not be related to each other.[Mar 1819] They were age 21 and 19. Battista and Domenica had as many as 12 children:

C11482L. Francesco Valeriano Lafranchi 15 Apr 1844 (> 1866) (> 22)

The traditional three marriage declarations were made on Sunday, March 21; Thursday, March 25, which was the Feast of the Annunciation; and Sunday, March 28. Inexplicably, Father Giovanni Battista Camesi recorded marriage records by the date of the first declaration, rather than the actual marriage date, and omitted the marriage date. The couple was likely wed within the week following March 28. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[A26JC1], a cousin to the elder Battista, and Antonio Lafranchi[Mar 1819], likely Domenica's elder brother.

Battista and Domenica named the following godparents for their children:

  1. Battista (III): Antonio Lafranchi, Domenica's elder brother, and Maria (Giacomina) Lafranchi[Bap 1820], likely the wife of Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[A26JC1] who witnessed Battista's and Domenica's marriage;
  2. Giacomo: Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[A26JC1] (as above) and Maria Teresia Lafranchi[Bap 1822], Domenica's elder sister;
  3. Giovanna: Carlo Maria Pezzaglia and Caterina Tognazzi[Bap 1822], who was likely the wife of Domenica's elder brother Antonio Lafranchi (as above);
  4. Celestino: Antonio Piezzi, the husband of Domenica's elder sister Maria Teresia Lafranchi (as above) and Giovanna Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1823];
  5. Domenic[a]: Pietro Lafranchi, likely Battista's brother, and Angiola Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1825B], sister to Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[A26JC1] (as above);
  6. Benedetto: Giovanni Lafranchi and Mrs. Maria (Cerini) Pezzaglia, wife of Carlo Maria Lafranchi (as above)[Bap 1828];
  7. Giuseppe Antonio: Giuseppe Antonio Lafranchi and Margherita (Tunzi?)[Bap 1833];
  8. Maria Giacomina: Carlo Antonio Delnotaro and Maria Giacomina Lafranchi[Bap 1834];
  9. Davide: Giovanni Lafranchi and Anna Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1836A], likely sister to Maria Giacomina Lafranchi (as above);
  10. Andrea: an illegible Cerini and Angela Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1838], apparent sister to Maria Giacomina and Anna Maria Lafranchi (as above);
  11. Paolo: Giacomo Lafranchi, Domenica's nephew, and Maria Caterina Lafranchi[Bap 1841]; and
  12. Francesco Valeriano: Francesco Lafranchi and Maria Orsola Pozzi.[Bap 1844]

In turn, Battista was named as godfather to: Giovanni Francesco Lafranchi[Bap 1817]; Mariangela Lafranchi, Domenica's niece[Bap 1819]; likely nephew Battista Lafranchi[Bap 1825A]; Maria Caterina Lafranchi[Bap 1826]; and Battista Giulio Lafranchi[Bap 1839]. Domenica was named as godmother to nephew Giovanni Simone Lafranchi[Bap 1829]; Pietro Antonio Lafranchi (Jr.), Battista's likely nephew; and niece Maria Maddalena Lafranchi.[Bap 1836B]

Giovanni Battista Lafranchi (Jr.) is held to have died on August 11, 1852. He was 55 years old.

Sons Celestino Benedetto and Andrea emigrated to work the goldfields of Victoria, Australia, in 1854 and 1858, respectively.

Maria Domenica Lafranchi died five years after Battista, reportedly on May 1, 1858. She was 58 years old.
