Lafranchi Family History, Part IV

July 2021
A fire destroyed most Coglio parish records on January 24, 1745. Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi selectively reconstructed the baptism and marriage records in that year from other records and the testimony of parishioners. As such the majority of the information about Coglio before 1745 is from that reconstruction, except for a few records from the neighboring parish of Giumaglio. Death records are not available for Coglio until 1888 so deaths throughout are estimated.
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Maria Caterina LAFRANCHI (1737-<1769)

B134. April 2016Maria Caterina Lafranchi was born and baptized on November 8, 1737, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Maria Caterina, wife of Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi.[Bap 1737] She married Giovanni Giacomo Maria Delnotaro on February 6, 1758, in Coglio. They had as many as three children before her early death. Giacomo remarried to Giovanna Maria Lafranchi on February 6, 1769, (the eleventh anniversary of Caterina and Giacomo's marriage). They had seven more children together. The blended families looked like:

B1341. Maria Delnotaro (15) Dec 1759 --  --
B1342. Francesco Antonio Maria Delnotaro 19 Jul 1761 --  --
B1343. Marianna Delnotaro (8) Jan 1764 --  --

(C11311.) Antonio Maria Delnotaro (9) Sep 1772 --  --
(C11312.) Giovanni Giacomo Delnotaro (Jr.) 30 Nov 1774 (< 1776) (Infancy)
(C11313.) Giovanni Giacomo Delnotaro (Jr.) (21) Nov 1776 (> 1808) (> 31)
(C11314.) Marianna Delnotaro (24) Oct 1778 --  --
(C11315.) Maria Domenica Delnotaro (13) Apr 1781 --  --
(C11316.) Giuseppe Delnotaro 23 Nov 1783 --  --
(C11317.) Maria Caterina Delnotaro 20 Mar 1785 8 Mar 1856 (70)

Caterina and Giacomo wed on February 6, 1758, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Giacomo Guglielmetti and Giovanni Antonio Delnotaro[Mar 1758], Giacomo's second cousin.

Caterina and Giacomo chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Maria: Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Mrs. Maria Perpetua (Lafranchi Guglielmetti)4 [Bap 1759B];
  2. Francesco: Giovanni Bartolomeo Marchese and Mrs. Maria Teresa (Sartori) Piezzi of Giumaglio[Bap 1761]; and
  3. Marianna: Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini (not the same as above) and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Marchese) Pozzi.[Bap 1764]

Caterina was named as godmother to Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi[Bap 1757] and Giovanni Maria Guglielmetti.[Bap 1759A]

Maria Caterina (Lafranchi) Delnotaro apparently died between 1764 and 1769[Mar 1769] and would have been between the ages of 26 and 31.

After Caterina's Death

Giacomo remarried to Giovanna Maria Lafranchi on February 6, 1769, (the eleventh anniversary of Caterina and Giacomo's marriage) at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo. Giovanna was reportedly both Giacomo's third cousin (the exact relationship unknown but is likely through either of their Delnotaro or Lafranchi lines) and a second cousin to Caterina, apparently tracing back to their Cerini-PozziX1 ancestors in Giumaglio. Giovanna was only 14 years old and Giacomo was 31. Reported witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Giuseppe Antonio Lafranchi[Mar 1769], Giacomo's cousin. Giacomo and Giovanna had at least seven children.

Giacomo and Giovanna chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Antonio: Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Mrs. Maria Caterina (Caneverini) Pozzi[Bap 1772], Francesco's sister-in-law;
  2. Giacomo (Jr.): Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Jorio) Marchese[Bap 1774];
  3. Giacomo (Jr.): Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi and Giovanna Maria Delnotaro, Giacomo's younger half-sister[Bap 1776];
  4. Marianna: (illegible godparents from Someo, godmother was a Caporgno[Bap 1778];
  5. Domenica: Pietro Antonio Lafranchi, Giovanna's paternal uncle, and Mariangela Lafranchi[Bap 1781];
  6. Giuseppe: Giacomo Piezzi and Mrs. Giacomina (Pozzi) Pezzaglia[Bap 1783]; and
  7. Caterina: Antonio Maria LaFranchi (likely referring to maternal uncle Giovanni Antonio LaFranchi) and Mrs. Maria (Piezzi) Lafranchi.[Bap 1785]

During the Napoleonic Era (1798-1815), Emperor Napoleon ordered a census that named every male, regardless of age, in 1808. Giovanni Giacomo was recorded at the age of 71 and his son Giovanni Giacomo was 31.[Cen 1808]

Giovanni Giacomo Maria Delnotaro likely died in 1809, after witnessing the marriage of Carlo Antonio Pezzaglia and Maria Margherita [Mar 1809] and before the birth of granddaughter Anna Maria Bonetti[Bap 1809] later that year. He was about 71 years old.

Giovanni Antonio Maria LAFRANCHI (1731/1745-1770)

C111/B137. February 2016Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi was the son of either Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (III)3C or Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (Sr.)3B and as such was either born in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, on December 10, 1731, or February 21, 1745, respectively. His godparents were either Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Gasparini) Pozzi, his great aunt by marriage to his great uncle Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi[Bap 1731]; or Giovanni Battista Zamaroni of Avegno, a likely maternal relative, and Mrs. Maria Apollonia Guglielmetti.[Bap 1745]

Giovanni Antonio married Maria Apollonia Pozzi, the granddaughter of Antonio's godfather[3C], Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi. They wed on May 18, 1765, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. While no impediment of consanguinity was found, they did obtain dispensation to forgo the traditional three declarations preior to their marriage, which was granted on April 24. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and another Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini.[Mar 1765] Antonio and Apollonia had at least two daughters:

C1111. Marianna Lafranchi 30 Nov 1767 (< 1770) (Infancy)
C1112. Marianna Lafranchi 15 Jan 1770 --  --

Antonio was an apparent brother to Maria Perpetua Lafranchi4 and was named as a witness to her marriage in 1763.[Bap 1763]

April 2016Antonio and Apollonia chose the following godparents for their daughter:

  1. Marianna (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Delnotaro and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Lafranchi, Apollonia's younger sister[Bap 1767]; and
  2. Marianna (younger): Giuseppe Lafranchi, husband to Apollonia's younger sister, and Maria Caterina Lafranchi[3C], Antonio's likely niece.[Bap 1770]

Antonio was named as godfather to nephew Giovanni Giacomo Guglielmetti (Jr.).[Bap 1761] He was also named as sponsoring godfather to nephew Giovanni Antonio Cerini (VI)6 at his confirmation in 1769 when confirmation ceremonies were held for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver.[Con 1769]

Apollonia was also named as godmother to Antonio's nephew Giovanni Antonio Cerini (VI)6 and Antonio's niece[3C] Giovanna Maria Lafranchi.[Bap 1769]

Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi died between January and May 1770[Mar 1770], soon after the birth of daughter Marianna. Depending on birth dates, he was either 24[3B] or 38[3C] years old.

Apollonia remarried to Giovanni Antonio De Bernardi of Lodano on June 9, 1770, in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. The traditional three declarations prior to their marriage began on Sunday, May 27. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Don Chancellor Rodolfo Maria Pozzi and Antonio's likely brother Giovanni Pietro De Bernardi[Mar 1770], who had been named as godfather to four children in Coglio.

Maria Perpetua LAFRANCHI4 (~1731-1782)

C112/B132. Maria Perpetua/Fortunata Lafranchi4 February 2016was probably born in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland, around 1731 or 1732 (baptism record not located). She may have been named after her likely great-aunt Perpetua Pozzi. Maria married three times, all at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. Her first marriage was to Giovanni Battista Fanora on February 25, 1754,[Mar 1754] but it only lasted a little while and they had no children. The second was to Giovanni Giacomo Guglielmetti (III) on February 15, 1757.[Mar 1757] They had two sons together before Giacomo's death. Finally, Maria married Antonio Cerini (V)5, a widower of the neighboring town of Giumaglio whose wife and young daughter had died in February and March 1763 during a widespread malady that afflicted Giumaglio. Maria and Antonio wed on August 10, 1763,[Mar 1763] and had four children together:

C1126. Giuseppe Antonio Maria Cerini 28 Jan 1774 (< 1851) (< 77)

Fanora

Maria first married Giovannia Battista Fanora on February 25, 1754. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., third cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Recorded witnesses were Antonio Maria Delnotaro and Giovanni Battista Guglielmetti, both of Coglio.[Mar 1754] Their brief marriage apparently did not produce any children.

After her marriage, Maria was named as godmother to Battista's niece Maria Apollonia Lafranchi.[Bap 1754]

Guglielmetti

Maria remarried to Giovanni Giacomo Guglielmetti on February 15, 1757. As before, they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., third cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Giacomo may have been as young as 14--just three weeks short of his 15th birthday--and Maria may have been around 24. Recorded witnesses were Giuseppe Delnotaro and Giuseppe Pezzaglia, both of Coglio.[Mar 1757] Maria and Giacomo had two sons before Giacomo's death.

After her remarriage, Maria was named as godmother to Maria Elena Delnotaro[Bap 1757]; Maria Delnotaro, daughter of Mrs. Maria Caterina (Lafranchi) Delnotaro, who was named as godmother to Maria's first child Giovanni three months earlier[Bap 1759B]; and likely nephew Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi.[Bap 1761B]

Cerini

Maria and Antonio married on August 10, 1763, in Coglio, five months after the death of Antonio's daughter and wife. Before their marriage, dispensation was obtained to dispense with the three traditional three declarations. Witnesses to their union were Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (Jr.) and Maria's brother Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (IV/Jr.), both of Coglio.[Mar 1763] Maria and Antonio had four children together and were married 18 years.[Cen 1776]

Maria and her husbands chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giovanni Guglielmetti: Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi, Notaio of Giumaglio, and Mrs. Maria Caterina (Lafranchi) Delnotaro[Bap 1759A];
  2. Giacomo Guglielmetti (Jr.): Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (IV/Jr.), Maria's brother, and Mrs. Mariangela (Lafranchi) Delnotaro of Prato[Bap 1761A];
  3. Innocenza Cerini: Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti and paternal aunt Maria Cerini[Bap 1764];
  4. Giovanni Antonio Cerini5: Giovanni Antonio Pedrotti, second cousin, and Maria Appolonia Pozzi[Bap 1767];
  5. Pietro Antonio Cerini5: Giovanni Pozzi and Mrs. Maria Domenica Pozzi[Bap 1769]; and
  6. Giuseppe Cerini: Giuseppe Antonio Maria Lafranchi and Mrs. Domenica (Piezzi) Giovanotti[Bap 1774], who was a daughter-in-law to sister Innocenza's godfather Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti.

Children Maria Innocenza and Giovanni Antonio6 were confirmed on July 29, 1769, when Giambattista Muggiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Their sponsoring godparents were named as Maria Margherita Lafranchi of Coglio and Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (Jr.) of Coglio, likely Maria's brother.[Con 1769] Son Pietro Antonio5 was born two months later.[Bap 1769]

Bishop Muggiasca returned to the valley seven years later and confirmed sons Pietro Antonio6 and Giuseppe Antonio Maria at the Church of San Giovanni Battista in Cevio, 8 kilometers upriver, on August 1, 1776. Their sponsoring godfathers were named as Giuseppe Pezzoni of Someo and Guglielmo Zanone of Bignasco.[Con 1776]

Maria Perpetua/Fortunata (Lafranchi Fanora Guglielmetti) Cerini4 died on January 13, 1782, following an apparent illness of over a week. She was reportedly about the age of 50 years, and therefore apparently around six years Antonio's senior. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1782]

Maria's Parents

Without a baptism record determining which Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi was Maria's father is left to studying circumstanial connections between her and the two families for clues:

April 2016Giovanni Antonio (III) and Giovanna Maria Pozzi [C112]:

April 2016Giovanni Antonio (Sr.) and Giacomina Guglielmetti [B132]:

After Maria's Death

Not long after Maria's death, Antonio remarried a third time to Maria Caterina Delnotaro, also of the neighboring village of Coglio. She was about 23 years younger than Antonio--not quite half his age--and only a few years older than his sons. Their marriage was short-lived and she died on December 2, 1783, at about the age of 22. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1783]

Antonio's fourth and final marriage was to Maria Giacomina Zamaroni/Zamaroni by 1784. She was about 32 years old and Antonio was about 46.[Cen 1795]

Antonio Cerini died between 1802 and 1805, the births and baptisms of grandchildren Maria Anna and Pietro Antonio Cerini, and during a period of incomplete, back-entered parish records. He would therefore have been in his early 60s.

Giuseppe Maria LAFRANCHI (I)Δ (1733-<1803)

C113.Giuseppe Maria Lafranchi (I)Δ was born and baptized on September 25, 1733, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Giovanni Battista Lafranchi, perhaps his paternal uncle, and Mrs. Maria Elena (Pozzi) Lesina, his maternal aunt.[Bap 1733] Giuseppe married Marianna Lafranchi on February 26, 1748, in Coglio and had five children. Soon after Marianna's death, Giuseppe remarried to Giovanna Maria Gaspari, of the neighboring village of Giumaglio, on November 25, 1765, in Giumaglio. July 2016He apparently married a third time to Maria Caterina De Bernardi of Lodano by 1787. Giuseppe fathered as many as 13 children:

Five months prior to their marriage, Giuseppe and Marianna were named as godparents to Angela Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1747], Giuseppe's second cousin.

Giuseppe and Marianna wed at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. They were both only 14 years old. No impediments were reported, indicating that any relationship between them was more than four generations away. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (IV), Giuseppe's brother, and Giovanni Battista Lafranchi, perhaps his uncle and godfather.[Mar 1748]

After their marriage, Giuseppe was named as godfather to Giovanni Battista Delnotaro[Bap 1751]; and Giuseppe Maria Pozzi.[Bap 1764]

Marianna Lafranchi may have died during or soon after giving birth to son Giuseppe (Jr.) in April 1765. Seven months later, Giuseppe remarried to Giovanna Maria Gaspari on November 25, 1765, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio.[Mar 1765]

Giuseppe apparently married a third time by 1787 to Caterina De Bernardi of Lodano and fathered three more children.

Giuseppe and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giovanna (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Mrs. Antonia (Zanello) Lafranchi, his brother Pietro Antonio's wife[Bap 1754];
  2. Antonio (elder): Giovanni Pietro De Bernardi of Lodano and Maria Caterina Lafranchi[Bap 1757];
  3. Rodolfo: Don Chancellor Rodolfo Maria Pozzi and Mrs. Maria Caterina (Delnotaro) Caneverini[Bap 1759];
  4. Caterina: Giovanni Giacomo Pezzaglia, Marianna's second cousin, and Mrs. Maria Barbara (Stornini) Pezzaglia[Bap 1761];
  5. Giuseppe (Jr.) (elder): Giuseppe Pozzi of Giumaglio, Giuseppe's second cousin, and Mrs. Margherita Del Maestro of Maggia[Bap 1765];
  6. Antonio (second): Giacomo Filippo Pozzi, Giovanna's cousin, and the widow Mrs. Maria Margherita (Pozzi) Stolfi[Bap 1770], Giovanna's maternal aunt;
  7. "Giacomo Marcello" (Antonio Maria Marcello): Giovanni Giacomo Delnotaro and Mrs. Marianna (Delnotaro) Caneverini[Bap 1772];
  8. Giacomo Filippo: Giovanni Antonio Caneverini and his wife Giovanna Maria (PozziCaneverini[Bap 1773]Giovanna's cousin;
  9. Giovanna (second): Giacomo Gaspari, Giovanna's younger brother, and Margherita Caneverini[Bap 1775];
  10. Giuseppe (Jr.) (younger): Giovanni Antonio De Bernardi of Lodano and Maria Angiola Lafranchi[Bap 1782];
  11. Battista: Giovanni Battista De Bernardi (Jr.), Caterina's brother, and Mrs. Maria Anna (De Bernardi) Pozzi[Bap 1787];
  12. Giovanna (younger): Giuseppe Lafranchi and Maria Elena Martinelli of Maggia[Bap 1789]; and
  13. Antonio (younger): Giuseppe Maria Fortunato De Bernardi of Lodano, Caterina's brother, and Mrs. Maria Giacomina (Pozzi) Pezzaglia.[Bap 1790]

Giuseppe apparently performed an emergency baptism on his granddaughter Giovanna Maria Lafranchi in 1791.[Bap 1791]

Giuseppe Maria Lafranchi died between 1794 and 1803. He was therefore in his 60s.

Pietro Antonio Maria LAFRANCHIΔ (1734->1797)

C114.Pietro Antonio Maria LafranchiΔ was born and baptized on August 23, 1734, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Giovanni Caneverini, one of the witness in the reconstruction of parish records in 1745, and Mrs. Maria Guglielmetti.[Bap 1734] He married Maria Antonia Zanelli of Menzonio, Val Lavizzara, about 17 kilometers upriver, on March 9, 1751, in Coglio.[Mar 1751] They had at least eight children before her death around 1796:

C1141. Maria Caterina Lafranchi 7 Jan 1756 (1773) (17)
C1142. Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi 28 Oct 1757 (> 1761) (Childhood)
C1143. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi 7 Oct 1759 (< 1771) (< 11)
C1144. Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi (10) Dec 1761 (1783-1794) (21-32)
C1145. Giovanna Maria Lafranchi 21 Jun 1764 (< 1767) (Infancy)
C1146. Giovanna Maria Lafranchi (23) Jul 1767 (< 1769) (Infancy)
C1147. Giovanna Maria Lafranchi (13) Apr 1769 --  --
C1148. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi (Sr.)Δ (3) Feb 1771 (> 1808) (> 37)

Pietro and Antonia were married on March 9, 1751, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation from the vicar-general of Como to forgo the traditional three declarations. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giacomo Contini of Menzonio and Simone Grandi[Mar 1751], likely also of Menzonio. Pietro Antonio was only 16 years old. Antonia's age is unknown.

Pietro and Antonia chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Caterina: Giuseppe Maria Lafranchi, Pietro Antonio's elder brother, and Mrs. Maria Alberta (Caneverini) Lafranchi, Pietro Antonio's aunt by marriage to his late uncle Giovanni Battista Lafranchi [Bap 1756];
  2. Antonio (elder): Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (II) and Margherita Zanelli, Antonia's sister[Bap 1757];
  3. Battista (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini, son of Giovanni, and Mrs. Isabella Grandi of Menzonio[Bap 1759];
  4. Antonio (younger): Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini, son of the late Antonio, and Mrs. Maria Perpetua (Lafranchi) Guglielmetti4, Pietro Antonio's likey sister[Bap 1761];
  5. Giovanna (1st): Giovanni Pozzi of Giumaglio and Mrs. Maria Caterina Caneverini[Bap 1764];
  6. Giovanna (2nd): Giovanni Battista Lafranchi and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Muregni) Lafranchi[Bap 1767];
  7. Giovanna (3rd): Giovanni Battista Zanelli (Jr.), Antonia's brother, and Mrs. Maria Apollonia (Pozzi) Lafranchi, Pietro's apparent sister-in-law[Bap 1769]; and
  8. Battista (younger): Don Giovanni Felice Daniele Capponi of Cerentino (by proxy of Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (II)) and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Lafranchi) Delnotaro[Bap 1771], Pietro Antonio's niece.

Pietro was named as godfather to Maria Angela Lafranchi[Bap 1763] and grandniece Maria Domenica Delnotaro[Bap 1781]; and grandnephew Giuseppe Antonio Lafranchi.[Bap 1789] Antonia was named as godmother to Pietro's niece Giovanna Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1754]; Giacomo Pietro Lafranchi, Pietro's cousin[Bap 1760]; Margherita Guglielmetti[Bap 1766]; and Pietro's grandnephew Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi.[Bap 1795]

Maria Antonia (Zanelli) Lafranchi apparently died in 1795 or 1796. She was likely in her late 50s.

August 2016Pietro remarried to Maria Caterina Caneverini on January 30, 1797, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giuseppe Delnotaro (perhaps a cousin to the bride) and Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi.[Mar 1797] Pietro was 62 years old at the time and Caterina was a month short of her 18th birthday.

Pietro Antonio Lafranchi likely died in 1797 or 1798 at the age of 63 or 64.

Maria Caterina went on to remarry to Giovanni Leone/Leoni of Cerentino, 20 kilometers upriver and along the Rovana di Campo. They wed on April 8, 1799, at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio by Father Giuseppe Antonio Leoni, the parish pastor and likely a relative of the groom's. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giuseppe Delnotaro; Pietro Caneverini, Caterina's elder brother; and Giovanni Battista Lafranchi, Pietro's son.[Mar 1799]

A year before their marriage, Giovanni was named the first time as a godfather to a child in Giumaglio and afterward to two children in Coglio, the second of whom was Caterina's niece Marianna Caneverini.[Bap 1798] One might suspect that Father Leoni had been keeping an eye out for eligible brides in the two neighboring parishes for his likely relative.
