Lafranchi Family History, Part B-II

May 2016
A fire destroyed most Coglio parish records on January 24, 1745. Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi selectively reconstructed the baptism and marriage records in that year from other records and the testimony of parishioners. As such the majority of the information about Coglio before 1745 is from that reconstruction, except for a few records from the neighboring parish of Giumaglio. Death records are not available for Coglio until 1888 so deaths throughout are estimated.
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Giovanni Giacomo LAFRANCHI (1690->1744)

B11.April 2016 Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi was born on December 16, 1690, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini, for whom he was likely named for, along with both his grandfathers, Giovanni Giacomo Lafranchi1 and Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi1; and Apollonia Guglielmetti.[Bap 1690] Giacomo married Giovanna Maria Caneverini and had as many as five children:

Giacomo and Giovanna chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Battista: Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Mrs. Maria Alberta (Caneverini) Lafranchi; [Bap 1732]
  2. Angiela: Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi and Maria Lafranchi, Giacomo's sister[Bap 1734]

Maria LAFRANCHI (1693->1734)

B12.April 2016 Maria Lafranchi was born on January 8, 1693, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. Her godparents were Giovanni Lafranchi and Antonia Lafranchi.[Bap 1693] She is believed to be the Maria who married Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi of the neigboring village of Giumaglio. They wed on on June 28, 1717, in Giumaglio. Giacomo Tomaso had two surviving children from his first marriage to Maria Gasparini, but both died three months after his marriage to Maria. Maria and Giacomo Tomaso had four children, however, nothing more was recorded after their baptisms suggesting they also may have died young.

B124. Angelo Giacomo Pozzi 2 Oct 1729 --  --

Maria and Giacomo Tomaso wed on June 28, 1717, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Their ceremony was conducted by Giacomo Tomaso's younger brother, Father Giovanni Battista Pozzi. Before their marriage they also obtained dispensation for the impediments of the third degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins) in one line and the fourth degree (i.e., third cousins) of consanguinity and affinity (i.e., related by marriage rather than by blood). The exact connections of their relationships are not known, but the affinity suggests that Maria and Giacomo Tomaso's first wife were also related somehow. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 and Guglielmo Stolfi.[Mar 1701]

Three months after their wedding, Giacomo Tomaso's two surviving children from his first marriage died five days apart on October 15 and 20. Both were buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1717A/B]

Maria and Giacomo Tomaso chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Pietro Cristo: Giacomo Pietro Righetti of Someo and Giovanna Maria Gasparini[Bap 1720];
  2. Caterina: Baldassare Amanzio Pozzi (husband of Giovanna Maria Gasparini, above) and Mrs. Domenica (Tomasini) Pozzi of Coglio[Bap 1723];
  3. Giovanna: Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and Giacoma Pozzi[Bap 1726]; and
  4. Angelo Giacomo: Giacomo Filippo Pozzi and Maria Lafranchi.[Bap 1729]
Giovanna Maria Lafranchi
A Giovanna Maria Lafranchi, daughter of Giovanni Battista, was named twice: one as the godmother to Maria Giacomina Ianzini[Bap 1724] and later as wife to Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and mother of Angelo Giacomo. In this second case, "Giovanna" is written above "Maria" in a correction, however, a Maria Lafranchi, daughter of Giovanni Battista, was then named in the same baptism record as godmother to Angelo Giacomo.[Bap 1729]

Maria was named as godmother to Giovanni Maria Gaspari[Bap 1722A]; Anna Maria Mazzini[Bap 1722A]; Maria Giacomina Ianzini[Bap 1724]; Giovanna Maria Adami[Bap 1727]; nephew Giovanni Battista Lafranchi[Bap 1728]; Giovanni Antonius Maria Lafranchi[Bap 1731]; and niece Angiela Maria Lafranchi.[Bap 1734]

Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi died on February 20, 1731, at the age of 50. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1731]

Maria (Lafranchi) Pozzi was last recorded in 1734 when she was 40 years old.

Giovanni Antonio LAFRANCHI (Sr.)3 (1690-~1749)

B13.April 2016 Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi (Sr.)3 was born on December 16, 1690, in Coglio, Ticino, Switzerland. His godparents were Giacomo Pietro Pozzi of the neighboring village of Giumaglio and likely his mother's cousin, and Mrs. Angelica (Pozzi) Lafranchi, his likely maternal aunt.[Bap 1708] Antonio was married three times. His first marriage was to Elena Patroni of Maggia, 3 kilometers downriver and they had one son. He next married Giacomina Guglielmetti4A and had two children. Finally he married Marianna Zamaroni of Avegno, 10 kilometers downriver. They had six children. Altogether Antonio fathered nine children:

B131. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi 8 Nov 1728 (Childhood) (Childhood)

B132. Maria (Perpetua) Lafranchi4 28 Dec 1733 (13 Jan 1782) (48)
B133. Domenica Lafranchi 2 Sep 1735 (> 1760) (> 24)

B134. Maria Caterina Lafranchi 8 Nov 1737 (1764-1769) (26-31)
B135. Giovanni Battista Lafranchi 10 Dec 1741 --  --
B136. Pietro Lafranchi 10 Nov 1742 --  --
B137. Giovanni Antonio Maria Lafranchi (Jr.) 21 Sep 1745 (1770) (24)
B138. Angela Maria Lafranchi 30 Aug 1747 --  --
B139. Maria Margherita Lafranchi 1 Aug 1749 --  --

Giovanni Antonio and his wives chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Battista (elder): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi and Maria Lafranchi, Antonio's elder half-sister[Bap 1728];
  2. Maria3: Giovanni Guglielmetti and Giacomina Delnotaro[Bap 1733];
  3. Domenica: Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Caneverini) Lafranchi, Antonio's sister-in-law[Bap 1735];
  4. Caterina: Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (I) and Maria Caterina, wife of Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi[Bap 1737];
  5. Battista (younger): Giovanni Battista Lafranchi and Maria Domenica (Adami), wife of Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi[Bap 1741];
  6. Pietro: Pietro Antonio Pozzi and Giovanna Maria (Tomasini), wife of Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi (I)[Bap 1742];
  7. Antonio: Giovanni Battista Zamaroni of Avegno and Mrs. Maria Apollonia Guglielmetti[Bap 1745];
  8. Angela: Giuseppe Maria Lafranchi and Marianna Lafranchi[Bap 1747], both of whom wed the following year; and
  9. Margherita: Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi and Mrs. Giacomina (Bontempi) Pozzi.[Bap 1749]

Elena (Patroni) Lafranchi likely died between 1728 and 1733.

Giacomina (Guglielmetti) Lafranchi3 likely died giving birth to daughter Domenica or soon thereafter.

Only about a month after Giacomina's death, Antonio remarried to Marianna Zamaroni at the Church of Santa Maria del Carmelo in Coglio on October 20, 1735. Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Maria Delnotaro and Antonio Delnotaro.[Mar 1735]

Giovanni Antonio Lafranchi may have died in 1749, prior to birth of daughter Margherita.[Bap 1749] As such he would have been about 41 years old.

Marianna (Zamaroni) Lafranchi lived until at least 1752 when she was named as godmother to Maria Domenica Delnotaro, whose mother, Margherita (Boggione) Delnotaro of Avegno, may have been a relative.[Bap 1752]
