Giovanna (CERINI) POZZI (~1662-1700)

111. Giovanna Cerini was born about 1662, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Giovanna married Giovanni "Zane" Pozzi in 1676 and had as many as five children:

1111. Giacomina Rosa Pozzi 4 Nov 1679 (> 1692) (> 11)
1112. Caterina Pozzi 19 Mar 1682 (> 1698) (> 15)
1113. Giovanna Pozzi 28 Feb 1686 (> 1698) (> 10)
1114. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi 16 Aug 1691 (Infancy) (Infancy)
1115. Maria Pozzi 15 May 1693 (1698-1702) (> 7)

Giovanna and Zane (recorded as Giovanni) wed on April 13, 1676, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., third cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not known). Witnesses to their union were Giovanni Cerini, Giacomo Sartori, and Giacomo Pozzi.[Mar 1676]

Giovanna and Zane named the following as godparents to their children:

  1. Giacomina Rosa: Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Giacomina Adami[Bap 1679];
  2. Caterina: Giovanni Cerini (Jr.) and Mrs. Caterina (Pozzi) Cerini[Bap 1682];
  3. Giovanna: Giovanni Pietro Pozzi and Mrs. Domenica (Cerini) Giumini[Bap 1686];
  4. Giacomo: Giovanni Pozzi and Lucia Pozzi, daughter of an elder Zane Pozzi[Bap 1691]; and
  5. Maria: Zane Pozzi (the elder) and Mrs. Maria (Bassi) Pozzi, perhaps her namesake.[Bap 1693]

Daughter Giacomina Rosa was apparently named for Zane's younger sister of the same name as well as for her godmother, Giacomina Adami.[Bap 1679]

Giovanna was named as the godmother to Giacomo Antonio Eusebio (Lesina) when she was about 10 years old[Bap 1672] and Cristiano Sartori.[Bap 1674] Zane (or perhaps the elder Zane) was named as godfather to Giovanni Stolfi[Bap 1690]; Maria Cerini[Bap 1692]; Maddalena Stolfi[Bap 1694]; and Giacomina Bonetti.[Bap 1698]

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giovanna was confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her sponsoring godmother was Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi.[Con 1677B] Giovanna in turn was named as godmother to Anna Maria Adami.[Con 1677]

Giovanna and Zane were enumerated with Zane's father, Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi (Sr.), and their first three daughters in 1692.[Cen 1692] Zane's father died over the following two years.

Giovanni "Zane" Pozzi died on July 12, 1694, at their home in Giumalgio. He was recorded to be "30 years or about" but was about 34 or 35 years old. He was buried the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1694]

Come 1698, Giovanna was identified as the widow of Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi (apparently mistakingly naming her late father-in-law) and enumerated with their three surviving daughters, Caterina, Giovanna, and Maria, and Giovanna's younger sister Caterina, who was marked as absent, perhaps working some distance from home.[Cen 1698]

Giovanna was also noted as a midwife who attended the birth of Silvestro Pozzi, the son of Giovanni Pietro Pozzi, who in turn had been godfather to Giovanna's daughter Giovanna.[Bap 1699]

Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi died on March 2, 1700, in Giumaglio. She was buried the same day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Giovanna was 38 years old.[Dth 1700] None of Giovanna's children appear to have outlived her.

Maria (CERINI) Pozzi (~1663-1704)

March 2015112. Maria Cerini was born about 1663, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. The baptism record of eldest daughter Giacomina identified her as the daughter of Giovanni Antonio Cerini, but she has yet to be confirmed as the daughter of our ancestor. Maria married Alessio Pozzi in 1685 and had six children together. After Maria's death in 1704, Alessio remarried to Maria Caterina Lesina and had three more children.

1123. Maria Pozzi 12 Nov 1688 (> 1720) (> 31)
1124. Caterina Pozzi 26 Dec 1694 (> 1731) (> 36)

1126. Giovanna Pozzi 10 Nov 1700 (> 1724) (> 23)

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Maria and her next younger sister Domenica were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her sponsoring godmother was Domenica Sartori.[Con 1677]

Maria and Alessio were married on June 2, 1685, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. March 2015Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., third cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Witnesses to their union were Giacomo Sartori and Giovanni Cerini.[Mar 1685]

Maria and Alessio chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomina: Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Mrs. Anna Maria (Cantoni) Pozzi[Bap 1686];
  2. Giacomo: Giovanni Giacomo Rusca (Giovanotti) and Domenica Adami[Bap 1687];
  3. Maria: Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town doctor and don, and Margherita Teresia Cerini (Sartori)[Bap 1688];
  4. Caterina: Giacomo Mirenini and Caterina Pozzi, her likely namesake[Bap 1694];
  5. Giovanna Maria (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini of Coglio and Mrs. Maddalena (Pozzi) Gaspari (Gasparini)[Bap 1699]; and
  6. Giovanna (younger): Giovanni Giacomo Adami and Giacomina Pozzi.[Bap 1700]

Maria (Cerini) Pozzi died on March 8, 1704, and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was reported to be "about 40 years" old.[Dth 1704] Maria and Alessio had been married for 18 years.

After Maria

With four children, ages 3 to 15, Alessio remarried five weeks after Maria's passing to Maria Caterina Lesina on April 15, 1704, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. The first of the three traditional declarations beforehand was on March 30, only three months after Maria's death. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giovanni Antonio Giumini and Antonio (either Lesina or Cerini).[Mar 1704] Alessio was about 19 years older than Caterina and together they had three more children:

--  Maria Giuliana Pozzi (11 Sep) 1705 (< 1709) (< 3)
--  Giacomo Pietro Pozzi 23 Apr 1709 (1760-1769) (50s)
--  Antonio Pozzi 19 Jun 1712 26 Apr 1758 (45)

8-year-old daughter Maria (presumed to be Giovanna Maria from Alessio's first marriage) died on August 24, 1708, and was interred the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1708] How it came that she and two of her sisters, one elder and the other younger sister, both of whom lived to adulthood, shared the same name is unknown.

Come 1709, the parish census recorded the blended family with daughters Maria, Caterina, and Giovanna.[Cen 1709]

Son Antonio was confirmed on June 12, 1719, when Giuseppe Olgiati, Bishop of Como, held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver. Bartolomeo's sponsoring godfather was named as Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio.[Con 1719] Francesco was the town notary and father of the future notary of Giumaglio, Don Rodolfo Maria Pozzi, who was born two months earlier.

Alessio Pozzi died on March 8, 1735, 31 years to the day after Maria died. He was was buried the in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. and reported to be "about 70 years" old[Dth 1735] but was closer to around 74.

Maria Caterina (Lesina) Pozzi was last recorded in the parish census of 1741, at which time she was reportedly 60 years old. With her lived sons Giacomo Pietro and Antonio, along with their wives and one young child each.[Cen 1741]

Domenica (CERINI) GIUMINI (~1665-1700)

March 2015113. Domenica Cerini was born between 1662 and 1665, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her marriage record identified her as the daughter of Giovanni Antonio Cerini, but she has yet to be confirmed as the daughter of our ancestor. Domenica married Giacomo Giumini in 1685 and had three children before her early death. The one surviving son, Giovanni, went on to become don of Giumaglio--the only Giumini on record to do so. Giacomo later remarried and had seven more children:

1131. Giovanni Giacomo Giumini 20 Aug 1686 5 Sep 1686 (16 days)
1132. Giovanni Giumini, Don/Notary 16 Nov 1691 12 Aug 1732 (40)
1133. Giovanna Maria Giumini 16 Oct 1698 (Infancy) (Infancy)

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Domenica and her next elder sister Maria were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her sponsoring godmother was Maria Cerini.[Con 1677]

Domenica and Giacomo were married on February 16, 1685, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Witnesses to their union were Giacomo Mirenini and Tomaso Stolfi of Giumaglio, and Giacomo Pietro Capo (Caporgno?) of Someo.[Mar 1685]

March 2015Domenica and Giacomo named the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Francesco Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Fusaschi) Giumini[Bap 1686];
  2. Giovanni Giacomo Giumini and Mrs. Giovanotta (Bonetti) Giornica[Bap 1691]; and
  3. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Margherita Apollonia Cerini, Domenica's suspected younger sister.[Bap 1698]

Domenica (Cerini) Giumini died on October 18, 1700, at the family home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Domenica was reported to be 35 years old and had been married for 15 years.[Dth 1700]

After Domenica

Two months after Domenica's death, Giacomo remarried to Maria Lafranchi of the neighboring town of Coglio on December 14, 1700, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, Giumaglio. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Giovanni Giacomo Mirenini.[Mar 1700, Dth 1700] They went on to have seven more children:

--  Giacomo Giumini (Jr.) (21) Oct 1701 (Infancy) (Infancy)
--  Giacomo Pietro Giumini 12 Oct 1703 --  --
--  Maria Rosa Giumini (26) Aug 1705 26 Aug 1709 (4)

--  Ludovico Giumini (4) Aug 1712 --  --
--  Domenica Teresia Giumini 4 Dec 1713 --  --

Giacomo died at his home in Giumaglio on October 4, 1718, and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1718] He was about 53 years old and had been married to Maria for 17 years.

Maria (Lafranchi) Giumini died a year later on January 7, 1720, at the family home. She was also buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1720] Maria was about 41 years old.

Caterina (CERINI) BONETTI (1672->1698)

February 2015114. Caterina Cerini was born on October 29, 1672, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. Her godparents were named as Giacomo Pietro Cerini and Mrs. Caterina (Pozzi) Cerini, her likely namesake.[Bap 1672] She married Pietro Antonio Bonetti on February 7, 1690, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Recorded witnesses to their union were Giovanni Pozzi, Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town don, and Giovanni Cerini.[Mar 1690]

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Caterina and her next younger sister Margherita Apollonia were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time her sponsoring godmother was Giovanna Rusca (Giovanotti).[Con 1677]

Caterina and Pietro Antonio were enumerated in 1692 with no children.[Cen 1692]

Pietro Antonio Bonetti may have died between 1692 and 1698 as Caterina was enumerated with her widowed sister, Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi, but marked as absent, perhaps working some distance from home.[Cen 1698] Pietro Antonio would have been in his early 20s.

No further parish records on Caterina are found in Giumaglio. What became of her is unknown.

Margherita Apollonia (CERINI) POZZI (1675-1743)

December 2013115. Margherita Apolloina Cerini was born on July 7, 1675, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. Her godparents were named as Carlo Antonio Pozzi and Maria Cerini.[Bap 1675] Margherita is believed to be the one who married Benedetto Pozzi on December 29, 1704, in what may have been a double wedding with her brother and Benedetto's sister at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Mar 1704A/B] She was about 23 years old and he about 37. They had four daughters, but only one survived to adulthood:

1151. Maria Caterina Pozzi (4) Aug 1706 (4 Sep) 1715 (9)
1152. Maria Domenica Pozzi 7 Jun 1711 (Infancy) (Infancy)
1153. Giacomina Pozzi (1711-1713) 2 Nov 1766 (55)
1154. Giovanna Maria Pozzi 9 Jan 1716 10 Dec 1724 (8)

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Margherita and her next elder sister Caterina were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time her sponsoring godmother was Mrs. Giovanna (Bonetti) Cerini.[Con 1677]

Margherita's father died in 1698, after which her younger brother Antonio2 became head of the household at the age of 16.

Margherita was named as the godmother to her likely niece Giovanna Maria Giumini.[Bap 1698]

Margherita and Benedetto were wed on the same day as her brother Antonio and Benedetto's apparent sister Maria Pozzi. Margherita and Antonio were both named as children of "the late Antonio" and Benedetto and Maria were both named as children of Giovanni Pozzi. Their three traditional marriage declarations, usually made on three successive Sundays, or on holy days in between, were made on December 26, 27 and 28, the Feasts of Saint Stephen, Saint John, and the Holy Innocents, respectively. Such a rapid progression is rather unusual and often indicated a "shotgun wedding," but neither Margherita nor Maria had children during their first year of marriage. The recorded witnesses to Margherita and Benedetto's marriage were Giovanni Pietro Moretti (Sartori)2 and Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi.[Mar 1704A/B]

Margherita and Benedetto chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Caterina: Giovanni Antonio Cerini (relationship unknown) and Giovanna Giumini[Bap 1706];
  2. Domenica: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Anna Maria Jorio of Brontallo, Val Lavizzara[Bap 1711];
  3. Giacomina: no baptism record found in Giumaglio; and
  4. Giovanna: Stefano Pozzi and Maria (Cerini or Ianzi).[Bap 1716]

Of their four daughters, one died in infancy, and two at the ages of 9 and 8. Only Giacomina lived to marry. She married Giovanni Giacomo Felice Pedrotti in 1730 and her father Benedetto was recorded as one of the witnesses.[Mar 1730]

Benedetto Pozzi died at his home on December 16, 1741, two weeks before his 37th wedding anniversary. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1741] Benedetto was in his early 70s.

Margherita Apollonia (Cerini) Pozzi died a year later, probably on January 19, 1743. She was named only as "Margherita Pozzi" and the month was illegible but was followed by another record dated January 30, 1743. She died at her home and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1743] Margherita was likely 67 years old.

Antonio CERINI (III)3 (1682-1744)

December 2013117. Antonio Cerini (III)3 was born on June 2, 1682, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. His elder brother of the same name died 8 days after birth leaving Antonio the only son to survive to adulthood. Antonio's godparents were named as Giovanni Cerini (Jr.) and Mrs. Caterina (Rietta/Righetti) Pozzi.[Bap 1682] Unlike his father and his descendants, both Antonio and his elder brother were christened simply as "Antonio" rather than "Giovanni Antonio." Antonio married Giovanna Maria Cristina "Maria" Pozzi2 on December 29, 1704, in what may have been a double wedding with his sister and Maria's brother at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Mar 1704A/B] It also turns out that both Antonio and Maria shared the same godfather. They had six children:[Cen 1741]

1171. Giacomina Cerini 24 Apr 1707 (< 1709) (Infancy)
1172. Domenica Caterina Cerini 9 May 1711 17 Nov 1753 (42)
1173. Giovanni Antonio Cerini (IV)4 29 Oct 1712 22 Jul 1758 (45)
1174. Giacomo Ludovico Cerini 12 May 1714 (Childhood) (Childhood)
1175. Giovanna Maria Cerini (Jun) 1716 (Childhood) (Childhood)
1176. Giovanna Maria Cerini 2 Sep 1721 29 (Jul) 1774 (52)

Antonio's father died in 1698, after which Antonio became head of the household at the age of 16. His elder sister Margherita Apollonia, younger half-sister Giacomina, and widowed stepmother Giovanna lived with him.[Cen 1702-1703]

Antonio and Maria were wed on the same day as Margherita Cerini and Benedetto Pozzi, both believed to be Antonio's and Maria's siblings. Antonio and Margherita were both named as children of "the late Antonio" and Maria and Benedetto were both named as children of Giovanni Pozzi. Their three traditional marriage declarations, usually made on three successive Sundays, or on holy days in between, were made on December 26, 27 and 28, the Feasts of Saint Stephen, Saint John, and the Holy Innocents, respectively. Such a rapid progression is rather unusual and often indicated a "shotgun wedding," but neither Maria nor Margherita had children during their first year of marriage. The recorded witnesses to Antonio and Maria's marriage were Giovanni Battista Pozzi, who later became a priest and vicar of Someo and Giumaglio, and Daniele Gaspari.[Mar 1704A/B]

After Antonio's and his sister's weddings, Antonio's half-sister Giacomina continued to live with him, perhaps until her marriage in 1720.[Cen 1709]

Antonio and Maria chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomina: Stefano Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Hostini [Delnotaro?]) Pozzi[Bap 1707];
  2. Domenica Caterina: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Mrs. Giacomina (Adami) Giovanotti[Bap 1711];
  3. Antonio3: Benedetto Pozzi, suspected to be Maria's brother and Antonio's brother-in-law, and Giacomina Cerini[Bap 1712];
  4. Ludovico: Giovanni Giacomo Giumini2 and Caterina Pozzi, Maria's likely niece[Bap 1714];
  5. Giovanna (elder): Giacomo Filippo Pozzi, brother to Stefano, above, and Giacomina Pozzi, daughter of Giovanni Pietro Pozzi[Bap 1716]; and
  6. Giovanna (younger): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and Giacomina Pozzi, Maria's likely niece and sister to Caterina above.[Bap 1721B]

Antonio (or possibly even his 16-year-old son Antonio) was named as godfather to nephew Giacomo Pietro Cerini.[Bap 1729]

In 1741, the household included son Antonio's wife and two children.[Cen 1741]

Antonio Cerini died at his home in Giumaglio on September 13, 1744. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1744] Antonio was 62 years old.

Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Cerini died three years later on January 19, 1748, at her home in Giumaglio, following a weeks-long illness. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was recorded to have been "about 69 years" but was 70 years old."[Dth 1748]

Giacomina CERINI (1696-1750)

118. Giacomina Cerini was born June 24, 1696, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. Her godparents were named as Giacomo Pozzi and Domenica Terini (Marchese).[Bap 1696] She married Giovanni Pietro Cerini on March 12, 1720, in Giumaglio. They had five sons:

1181. Giovanni Cerini 12 Dec 1724 (24) Nov 1803 (78)
1182. Giovanni Antonio Cerini 24 Jan 1728 (< 1741) (Childhood)
1183. Giacomo Pietro Cerini 15 Oct 1729 (< 1736) (< 6)
1184. Giuseppe Maria Cerini 31 Oct 1734 (> 1763) (> 28)
1185. Giacomo Pietro Cerini 23 Aug 1736 (> 1760) (> 23)
Cerini Connections
The marriage of Giacomina and Pietro is the closest Cerini connection (albeit, not of the direct male lines) between our Cerini family and that of the Cerini family of Tomales Bay, California. The Tomales Bay family descends from eldest son Giovanni. As noted in Giacomina and Pietro's marriage record, there was no relationship impediment between them, meaning that any blood relationship they had was beyond another four generations back.

Giacomina's father when she was only 2 years old, at which time her 16-year-old brother Antonio2 became head of the household. She, her mother, and her elder half-sister Margherita Apollonia, all lived with Antonio2.[Cen 1702-1703]

Giacomina and Pietro wed on March 12, 1720, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Pietro, who was the son of the late Giovanni Cerini, was declared not to have any relationship "impediment" with Giacomina.[Mar 1720] This means that if related by blood then that relationship was beyond the four generations that the Church was concerned with. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 and Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi, who later became the godfather of their firstborn son.[Mar 1720]

Giacomina and Pietro chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giovanni: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Giovanna Pozzi[Bap 1724]
  2. Antonio: Carlo Antonio Lesina and Giacomina Pozzi[Bap 1728];
  3. Giacomo Pietro (elder): Antonio Cerini2, Giacomina's elder half-brother (or perhaps his son), and Mrs. Maria (Domenica) Lesina[Bap 1729];
  4. Giuseppe: Felice Lesina, husband of Maria (Domenica), and Maria Margherita Adami[Bap 1734]; and
  5. Giacomo Pietro (younger): Giovanni Antonio Delnotaro and Mrs. Domenica Pozzi.[Bap 1736]

Giovanni Pietro Cerini died on February 4, 1739, in Giumaglio, and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was reportedly "about 40 years" old.[Dth 1739]

Giacomina carried on with three surviving sons, ages 4 through 20 (actually 16). Interestingly, she was enumerated next to another widow, Giacomina (Cerini) Adami, possibly the widow of Giovanni Giacomo Adami.[Cen 1741]

Giacomina Cerini died on March 26, 1750, at her home in Giumaglio. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1750] Giacomina was 53 years old.
