Addelida (CERINI) BELLONIΔ (1861)

1173233E1. Addelida CeriniΔ was born on July 4, 1861, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was baptized that same day as Adelaide, and her maternal uncle Pietro Cerini and paternal aunt Maria Cerini were named as her godparents. Addelida immigrated to America in 1887 and married Celeste Belloni (later Bellon) of Italy about 1890 or early 1891. They had seven children, only four of whom survived beyond 1900:[Cen 1900]

Celeste immigrated in 1885 and Addelida in 1887. They married about 1890 or early 1891 and settled in Dunmore Borough, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, on the northwest edge of Scranton by 1900. They appear to have lived with four other households at 242 Willow Street in a neighborhood that was almost exclusively Italian day laborers and coal miners. Celeste worked as a day laborer and had been unemployed four weeks during the year. He could not read or write, but could speak English. Addelida was literate and spoke English, and the elder two children, ages 7 and 9, attended school.[Cen 1900]

Giovanni Pietro CERINI (1863->1920)

1173233E2. Giovanni Pietro "Peter" Cerini was born about October 2, 1863, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland, and baptized on October 4 at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. His paternal aunt Marianna Cerini and Giovanni Piezzi were named as his godparents.

Peter immigrated to America in 1880[Cen 1910, 1920], likely with his father. He may be the Peter Cerini who was naturalized on August 15, 1887, in Sonoma County[Nat 1887]; however, the 1920 census recorded that he was naturalized in 1895.[Cen 1920] Witnesses to the 1887 naturalization were S. Piezzi and John Giumini, who both also happened to serve as witnesses the same day to a C. Pinana from Switzerland.[Nat 1887]

Soldati
Marino Soldati was the brother of the wife of Pietro's nephew, Lodovico and Corina (Soldati) Pomi.

In 1910 Peter was living with his sister, Annonziatta, and working as a dairy laborer in Analy Township, Sonoma County, California.[Cen 1910] By 1920 he was living as a hired farmer laborer with the Marino Soldati family on Stony Point Road in Petaluma Township, Sonoma County.[Cen 1920] It is unknown if he ever married or raised a family.

Annonziatta (CERINI) POMI MARCIΔ (1865-1929)

Anna (CERINI) POMI MARCI 1173233E3. Annonziatta "Anne" CeriniΔ was born in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland, on September 2, 1865, and baptized, as Maria Annunciata, on September 3 at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio. Felice Cerini, perhaps her great uncle, and Appolonia Piezzi were named as her godparents. Anna married Francesco "Frank" Pomi, a native of Barcone, Lecco province, Italy, in Giumaglio had four children:

Frank POMI? According to their marriage announcement, Francesco was born on May 3, 1866, in Barcone, Valsassina, Lecco province, Italy, to Ambrogio Pomi and Dorotea Darconi. He and his father were charcoal burners (carbonajo).

Annonziatta's first son, Lodovico, was born in Giumaglio in 1887.[Bap 1887] She and Lodovico emigrated by way of Le Havre, France, arriving in New York aboard the La Bretagne on September 29, 1890, and bound for San Francisco.

Petaluma Argus Courier,
November 18, 1908
"Passed Away Near Stony Point"

"Frank Pomi of Stony Point passed away Monday evening after a short illness from brain fever. Deceased was a native of Italy, 42 years of age, who had resided on the ranch where he died, for the past fourteen years. He leaves a widow and four grown children--three sons and a daughter."

"The funeral will be held from the family residence Thursday morning at 10:30, thence to the Druid's Hall in Santa Rosa, from whence the body will be taken to St. Rose's church, Santa Rosa, for services. Interment at Calvary Cemetery."

Frank Pomi died of brain fever at his ranch in Stony Point on Monday, November 16, 1908. He was only 42 years old. Frank was initially buried at Catholic Calvary Cemetery in Santa Rosa on November 19, but later removed to Sebastopol and finally, following the death and burial of son Candin Albert in 1916, was laid to rest with him and son Louis at the Catholic Calvary Cemetery in Petaluma on May 18, 1916.

Upon Frank's death, the family estate was valued at about $2000 and consisted of 500 cows and a creamery.

By 1910, Annonziatta was living with her children, brother Pietro, and a hired dairy laborer, her cousin, Luca Santino Marci, in Analy Township in Sonoma County, likely along the Gravenstein Highway between Sebastopol and Cotati. Annonziatta and Luca were first cousins through their mothers and Luca's elder brother Gerunzio Marci had married Annonziata's niece, Martina Malugani, a couple years before.

Annonziatta and Luca wed on Monday, July 10, 1911, at St. Vincent Catholic Church in Petaluma. She was 45 years old and he was 26. They continued to reside in Sebastopol.[Cen 1920]

Petaluma Argus Courier, July 10, 1911
"Were Wedded On Monday"

"A quiet wedding took place at St. Vincent's church at 11 o'clock on Monday morning when Luca Marci claimed his bride Mrs. Anopriata [sic] Pomi. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father J. Leahy and was witnessed by members of the families and a few friends."

"After the marriage ceremony the couple were tendered a reception and banquet at the American hotel."

"Both are residents of this vicinity, the happy groom being a son of Elizabeth Marci of Switzerland and a brother of Dorothy and Gerunzio Marci. The bride is a brother of Pietro Cereni [sic]. After a short honeymoon trip the couple will reside in this vicinity."

Marci Immigration
Luca S. Marci emigrated to America via Le Havre, France, aboard the La Bretagne, arriving Ellis Island on December 15, 1901 and bound for San Francisco to join with his brother (Gerunzio Marci).

Luca had previously petitioned for citizenship on November 17, 1919, but was denied because he had claimed exemption during World War I. He declared his intent again on January 28, 1924, and the petition successfully went through in 1929. Witnesses were E. De Bernardi, a notary public in Santa Rosa, and Candido Piezzi, a fellow Sebastopol farmer and distant cousin of his and Annonziatta's.[Nat 1929]

Annonziatta (Cerini Pomi) Marci died on July 19, 1929, from heart failure following an automobile accident in which a fire truck struck her vehicle. She died at General Hospital in Santa Rosa within a half hour of arrival. She was 63 years old. Annonziatta was buried on July 23 at the Calvary Cemetery in Petaluma, Sonoma County, California, along with her first husband, Frank Pomi, her three sons, and younger brother, Dan Cerini.[Dth]

POMI Plot, PetalumaPer Annonziatta's death certificate, she and Luca had been living six miles south of Sebastopol, near Cotati (which likely conforms to the outskirts of modern-day Rohnert Park) in Sonoma County at the time of her death. She had been a U.S. resident for 37 years, 36 of which she resided in California.[Dth 1929]

Petaluma Argus Courier, July 20, 1929
"Former Petaluman Died From Fright At Santa Rosa"

"Mrs. Annonziatta Marci, prominent resident of Mount Vernon district, and mother of Henry Pomi of this city, died at the General hospital, Santa Rosa, Friday afternoon following an auto accident at Sebastopol avenue and South A street, that city, when an automobile driven by her niece, Mrs. Mazzini [sic] of Point Reyes, was struck broadcast by a fire truck of the state forest service. The woman died of fright, it is believed. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead by Dr. C. M. Carlson."

"The accident happened when Mrs. Mazzini failed to hear the signal of the siren on the truck as it was racing to a brush fire at Bodega, according to witnesses. Mrs. MARCI was not thrown from the car. The truck which is to be used in fighting fires in Mendocino county, was driven by L. B. Brown."

"Mrs. Marci and her niece were en route to Santa Rosa to visit a friend who was ill when the accident occurred."

"One of the best known women in southern Sonoma county the death of Mrs. Marci will cause regret. She was the widow of Frank Pomi of Petaluma and some years after his death she married Luca Marci who survives her. The couple owned a fine range in the Mount Vernon district."

"A native of Switzerland, Mrs. Marci had spent much of her life in this country. She was the mother of Mrs. Walter Bellon, Sebastopol, Henry Pomi, Petaluma; sister of Mrs. Aurelia Malugani of Santa Rosa; Mrs. Carolina Bertelli, Switzerland; Peter Cerini, Sebastopol; Daniel Cerini, San Joaquin, Calif."

"Having a large number of friends in this city, the death of the well known matron has caused sincere regret. THe body has been removed to the chapel of Lafferty & Smith, Santa Rosa, and Sunday will be taken to the home from which place the funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, then to St. Vincent's church, Petaluma, where a requiem mass will be celebrated for the repose of the soul at 10 o'clock. The interment will be in the family plot in Calvary cemetery."

Gravenstein Highway
The 1930 residence is likely 4988 Gravenstein Highway, where the Marcis and Bellons are recalled to have lived.

After Annonziatta's death, Luca is enumerated in the 1930 census with his step-daughter Mabel (Pomi) Bellon, her husband Walter Bellon, and Annonziatta's nephew Doro Bertelli. They were living along the Gravenstein Highway (Highway 116) in Analy Township, likely referring to the same residence near Cotati and modern-day Rohnert Park.[Cen 1930]

Aurelia Caterina (CERINI) MALUGANI9 (1867-1948)

Aurelia (CERINI) MALUGANI 1173233E4. Aurelia Caterina Cerini9 was born on August 3, 1867, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. She was baptized on August 4 at the at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Giumaglio where her godparents were named as Agostino Piezzi and Maria Cerini. She married Joseph Charles Malugani2 on either February 5[Mar 1888] or May 31, 1888.[Cen ~1890] They were wed by Reverend Giovanni Bardelli, presumably in Primaluna by authority of Father Riccardo Pedrazzini, who recorded the marriage at the parish of Giumaglio. Joe is believe to have been the stepson of Aurelia's paternal aunt, Marianna (Cerini) Malugani. Aurelia and Joe's first two children were born in Giumaglio.

In 1889, Joseph emigrated to California, apparently leaving her pregnant with their second child, and she followed in 1893 with her brother-in-law, Antoni Malugani, sister-in-law, Catherina Malugani, and children, Martina and Charles. Together, Aurelia and Joseph raised eight children and two others died in infancy between 1900 and 1908[Cen 1900, Birth 1908, Cen 1910] and are buried up by the milk house off St. Helena Road:

Two More Children?
The 1900 census notes that six of six children survived and the 1910 census notes that eight of ten survived, suggesting that two other children were born between these two censuses and died young.[Cen 1900,1910]

Aurelia is described as a fussy old woman who routinely pouted when she didn't get her way. She was the family disciplinarian and is remembered to be a perfect shot at throwing her wood sandals at her children when they misbehaved. Son Charles received a "K"-shaped scar between his eyes after crossing his mother. Son Dan still has a pair of her wood sandals, which his dad made from alder, over 80 years ago.

Aurelia CERINI-MALUGANI & Joseph MALUGANI After husband Joe died in 1924, she and her youngest daughter and son lived at 926 Cherry Street in downtown Santa Rosa.[Cen 1930] There Filomena worked as a hotel maid and Dan worked as a service station operator.[Cen 1930]

Daughter Filomena cared and provided for Aurelia for seven years after Joe's death. Filomena passed away in 1931 at the early age of 30 and Aurelia was thoroughly devastated. To help out, 12-year old granddaughter, Hazel Malugani came to live with her for a year. After that Aurelia moved in with her youngest son, Dan and his family.[Cen 1940]

Press Democrat, January 29, 1948
"Death Claims Mrs. Malugani"

"Mrs. Aurelia Malugani, widow of the late Joseph Malugani, died yesterday in San Rafael. She resided in Santa Rosa for 55 years before moving to Mill Valley, where she had lived for the past 14 years."

"Funeral services will be held Saturday morning from the Memorial Chapel of Lafferty & Smith, thence to St. Rose's Church where a requiem High Mass will be said. Interment will be in a family plot in Calvary Cemetery here. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral chapel tomorrow night at 8 o'clock."

"Mrs. Malugani was the mother of Mrs. Martina Tomlinson of Niles, Mrs. Josephine Sanford of Washington, Daniel Malugani of Mill Valley, Charles Malugani, Anthony Malugani and Joseph Malugani of Santa Rosa. She was born in Switzerland. Mrs. Malugani was for many years an active member of Santa Rosa Lodge, Italian Catholic Federation."

Aurelia (Cerini) Malugani died on January 28, 1948, after a 3-day hospital stay at San Rafael General Hospital in Marin County. She had been living with her son, Dan Malugani at 63 Hilarita, Mill Valley. She was buried on January 31, 1948, at the Calvary Cemetery in Santa Rosa next to her husband and youngest daughter Filomena. Aurelia was 80 years old.

Ernesta Carolina (CERINI) BERTELLIΔ (1869-)

1173233E5. Ernesta Carolina CeriniΔ was born on June 28, 1869, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was baptized the following day as Ernesta, but went by Carolina. Her godparents were named as Dominicus Pedrotti and her paternal aunt Maria Cerini.[Bap 1861] Carolina first had a daughter by an Austrian* man and later married Prisilliano Bertelli, a native of Preore, Trentino-Alto Adige, in northeastern Italy, then under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They wed in Giumaglio on September 27, 1894, and witnesses were named as Antonio Cerini and Giacomo Muscio.[Mar 1894] They had 11 children, include one pair of twin girls:

The Bertellis started their family in Preore, where daughter Julia was born. The following year they resettled in Giumaglio where daughter Maria and the rest of their children were born.[Bap 1896]

Bertelli Origins

The Austria-Hungary Empire controlled the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige (then referred to as Südtirol, "South Tyrol"), which, as with Prisilliano Bertelli, may have been where Olga's biological father originated. Prisilliano's arrival records note his birth place, Preore, as being Austrian.

The family appears to have started in Preore, as Prisiliano's and Giulia's 1911 embarkation records both state that they originated in Preore, Austria, and that their resident had been in Giumaglio. Maria's embarkation record of 1912 states she originated and lived in Giumaglio, but come 1920, "Vittoria" (Claudina), "Giovanni" (Doro), and Emilio are all annotated to have originated in Trione, Italy (presumed to be Tione di Trento, just 2 km down the valley from Preore) and to have been residing in Giumaglio prior to departure.

According to a Swiss book on Swiss family names published in 1940, the Bertelli name is found after 1900 in Giumaglio and Bellinzona in the canton of Ticino.

La Provence

Prisiliano appears to have made several trips between Switzerland and America while Carolina stayed behind in Giumaglio raising their younger children. When Olga immigrated in 1907 she stated that she was joining her father.

Carolina gave birth to twin girls, Virginia and Giuseppina, and both were baptized the following day in the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Prisilliano's home parish in Preore.[Bap 1909]

Prisiliano and eldest daughter Giulia departing Le Havre, France, aboard the La Provence on March 4, 1911. They arrived in New York on March 11 and he was labeled as a "non-immigrant alien," stating that his wife Carolina resided in Giumaglio, Switzerland, and that he was bound for Petaluma, Sonoma County, California.[Pass 1911]

BERTELLI Home, Giumaglio
Bertelli Home, Giumaglio, 1986

Children Claudina, Doro, and Emil immigrated together in July 1920. If Carolina ever immigrated (and I have yet to find any record of her in the U.S.) she would have come after 1920.

Prisilliano Bertelli died on July 15, 1947, in Marin County, California, at the age of 84. He was reportedly buried at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in San Rafael.[Grave]

Giacomo Valeriano "Dan" CERINI (1872-1947)

Dan CERINI1173233E7. Giacomo Valeriano "Dan" Cerini was born on June 27, 1872, in Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. He was baptized on 1 July by Father Laurentius (Lorenzo) Rizzoli, of the nearby parish of Coglio. He was not named at the time, but later was recorded as Giacomo Valeriano, but when he emigrated to California he was only known as "Dan." Dan's godparents were named as Giacomo Pedrotti and Carolina Pozzi.[Bap 1872] Dan emigrated to America in 1888 and was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1894.[Cen 1920] He never married.

Caruthers, Fresno County
John Cerini (born January 1854) also lived in the area of Caruthers and Riverdale in Fresno County.
Batista or son Dan CERINI

Dan lived near San Joaquin, southwest of Fresno, Fresno County, California, as early as 1920 where he had a butcher shop.[Cen 1920] By 1930, Dan was living on a farm along Manning Avenue, likely southwest of Fresno outside of San Joaquin, to the northeast of the small town of Caruthers.[Cen 1930] Come 1940 he was enumerated living on a rented farm on Elkhorn Avenue in Judicial Township 15.[Cen 1940] This is about 11 miles southwest of Manning Avenue and about 6 miles southeast of the town of Caruthers. Cerini Avenue, which is associated with the John Cerini family in nearby Laton, is about 2 miles south of Elkhorn Avenue. At the time of Dan's death he was recorded to have lived in the Caruthers community for 21 years and in America for 61 years.[Dth 1947]

Dan Cerini died at the General Hospital of Fresno County in Fresno on October 18, 1947, following a four-day hospital stay. He had suffered for two years from arteriosclerotic heart disease. He was 75 years old.[Dth 1947]

Arrangements for removal were provided by Lafferty and Smith of Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California. He was later buried at the Catholic Calvary Cemetery in Petaluma, Sonoma County, with his elder sister Annonziatta and her family.[Dth 1947]

Dan's parents are listed on his death certificate as "Robert Cerini" and "Jophine Cerini," both of Switzerland, as provided by the General Hospital of Fresno County.[Dth 1947]
