Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Gio. Domenico TOGNAZZINI (Jr.)3 (1764-<1824)

113.May 2017 Giovanni Domenico Tognazzini (Jr.)3 likely correlates to the one baptized on August 28, 1764, in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. He was baptized in the home by Mrs. Maria Catterina (Righetti) Filipponi because of imminent danger of death and afterward rebaptized in the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo. His godparents were Don Doctor Teodoro Maria Martinoni and Mrs. Maria Anna (Martinoni) Guerra.[Bap 1764]

Domenico married Marianna Balzari2 of Cevio, about 7 kilometers upriver, and had at least three children:

1131. Giovanni Battista Tognazzini 9 Aug 1797 13 Aug 1836 (39)
1132. Anna Maria Tognazzini 4 Dec 1799 2 Feb 1803 (3)
1133. Marianna Francesca (Giovanna) Tognazzini4 8 Mar 1804 31 Jan 1876 (71)
Resident of Riveo?
Parish records in Someo generally did not state that Domenico was a native of nearby Riveo, which belonged to the parish in Someo; however, at daughter Anna Maria's death, Domenico was described as "of this location, Someo" but she was buried at the Oratory in Riveo[Dth 1803], which suggests the family lived in Riveo but perhaps was not patrizia there. After daughter Giovanna married and moved to Giumaglio, parish records in Giumaglio consistently record that she was from Riveo.

Domenico and Marianna were wed on September 9, 1793, in Marianna's home Church of San Giovanni Battista in Cevio. Witnesses to their marriage were Giovanni Respini, the church custodian, and Giovanni Battista Balzari, Marianna's likely brother.[Mar 1793]

May 2017Domenico and Maria chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Battista: Giovanni Battista Francesco Balzari, Maria's brother, and the widow Maria Maddalena (Comistò) Righetti[Bap 1797];
  2. Anna Maria: Giuseppe Caporgno and Maria Domenica Balzari, Maria's sister[Bap 1799]; and
  3. Marianna Francesca: Giovanni Giacomo Righetti and Margherita Righetti.[Bap 1804]

Daughter Anna Maria died at the age of 3 on February 2, 1803. She was buried the following day at the L'oratorio della Madonna delle Grazie in Riveo.[Dth 1803]

During the civil census of 1808, which only recorded males, Giovanni Domenico was enumerated as present but 10-year-old son Giovanni Battista was absent.[Cen 1808]

Giovanni Domenico Tognazzini (Jr.) died sometime before the marriage of daughter Giovanna.[Mar 1824]
