John Leonard REEDΔ (1836-1910)
1DBI14.John Leonard ReedΔ was born May 8, 1836, in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. After his father died and his mother remarried and moved to California, John became a mariner like his older brothers. John married Clarinda D. Blossom, reportedly on April 2, 1867, in Dartmouth. They reportedly were first cousins through Clarinda's mother, Sarah (Reed) Blossom. John and Clarinda had no children.
After Clarinda's death, John remarried to Hanna Mabel Macomber, a native of Dartmouth, on August 13, 1902, in Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island. She was 20 years old and he 66.[Mar 1902] They went on to have three children together:

1DBI142. | Stanley L. M. Reed | 8 Jun 1904 | 2 Sep 1992 | (88) |
1DBI143. | Leslie Durwood ReedΔ | 22 Jun 1907 | Oct 1977 | (70) |
Leonard and elder brother Israel, both recorded as mariners, registered for the draft on June 30, 1863.[Draft 1863]
In 1870, John was living with his in-laws, the Benjamin and Sarah Blossom family, in North Dartmouth, where John was recorded as a mariner. Nearby lived his widowed sister-in-law, Sarah E. (Sampson) Reed and her two children.[Cen 1870]
Clarinda D. (Blossom) Reed died of Bright's disease on April 6, 1900, in Dartmouth. She was 59 years old. Clarinda was buried at Chace Family Cemetery in Dartmouth.[Dartmouth, Grave]
After Clarinda's death, John continued to farm at their home west of Hixville. A widowed housekeeper by the name of Jennie Minor took care of John. Next-door was the George T. and Georgiana Macomber family, which included young Hannah Mabel Macomber[Cen 1900], whom John married two years later.
John remarried to Hanna Mabel Macomber, a native of Dartmouth, on August 13, 1902, in Bristol, Bristol County, Rhode Island. She was 20 years old and he 66.[Mar 1902] They had three children together.
John's farm was identified as being along Prospect Hill Road in North Dartmouth, which was enumerated after Faunce Corner Road to the west of Hixville, and before Phillip's Road and Pine Island Road, to the north of Faunce Corner Road. John's farm was mortgaged and he was working as a gardener. Boarding with them was Hannah's brother Arthur Macomber, who worked as a farm laborer; and enumerated next was Hannah's father, George T. Macomber, a carpenter at a millwright, who lived with 63-year-old widower Jason A. Durfee. Durfee's son Joseph Arthur would go on to wed daughter Cynthia in 1919, while in between Navy enlistments. Also, as noted previously, nearby was John's widowed and remarried sister-in-law, "Sarah E. R. Chace."[Cen 1910]
John Leonard Reed died of sarcoma on his neck on October 23, 1910, in North Dartmouth. He was 74 years old. John was buried three days later at Chace Family Cemetery in Dartmouth.[Dartmouth, Grave]
After John's death, Hannah and sons Stanley and Leslie were enumerated on Old Fall River Road near Dartmouth, which was further identified in 1930 as 56 Old Fall River Road. This may refer to the same location as in 1910 as Old Fall River Road crosses Faunce Corner Road. With them lived 52-year-old widower boarder Israel A. Reed, John's nephew, who worked as a farm laborer and stayed with the family through 1930. Hannah worked as a practical nurse and son Leslie worked as a gas station service man in 1930.[Cen 1920, 1930]
Hannah Mabel (Macomber) Reed died in 1939 at about the age of 57. She was also buried at Chace Family Cemetery in Dartmouth.[Grave]
