Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

The De Bernardi (Debernardi) family of Broglio, Valle Lavizzara, is so far only known through parish records of Someo and Giumaglio, 17 kilometers downriver, in the mid-18th Century. An relation between it and the De Bernardi families of Lodano and Maggia, another 5 kilometers downriver, is unknown.

Giovanna Maria (DE BERNARDI) JORIO (~1730-1760)

11. Giovanna Maria De Bernardi was born about 1729 or 1730, probably in Broglio, Val Lavizzara, Ticino, Switzerland. She was the daugher of a Giovanni Antonio1 who is presumed to be our ancestor. Giovanna married Teodoro Jorio, son of the late Giovanni Antonio, on August 27, 1754. He had previously been married to Maria Caterina Muscio, who died after only two months.[Mar 1752, Deth 1753]

Witnesses to Giovanna and Teodoro's marriage were Toma Perini and Giovanni Antonio Muscio (Jr.), both of Someo.[Mar 1754]

Giovanna was named as godmother to Giovanni Pietro Tognazzini[Bap 1757], whose mother had been a sister-in-law to husband Teodoro.

Giovanna Maria (De Bernardi) Jorio died on March 7, 1760, at her home in Someo and was buried the following day in the cemetery in Someo. She was recorded to be "about 30 years" old.[Dth 1760] They had been married six and half years, but it is not known if they had any children.

Teodoro remarried seven weeks later to his third wife, the widow Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Righetti) Tognazzini, daughter of the late Giovanni Antonio and wife of the late Antonio Tognazzini, on April 29, 1760.[Mar 1760] He and Giovanna had at least one daughter.

Innocenza (DE BERNARDI) GIUMINI2 (1738-1805)

12. Maria Innocenza De Bernardi2 was born on October 23, 1738, probably in Broglio, Val Lavizzara, Ticino, Switzerland.[Cen 1748, 1760] She marred Giovanni Giacomo Giumini5 of Giumaglio, 18 kilometers downriver, by 1759. They had at least 11 children, including one set of triplet daughters:

12K. Maria Apollonia Giumini 10 Mar 1779 16 Nov 1779 (8 mos.)

After their marriage, the Giumini family included Giacomo's widowed mother.[Cen 1760-1795]

The Giuminis chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomo Pietro Francesco: Francesco De Bernardi, Innocenza's brother, and Domenica Gasparini, Giacomo's cousin on their maternal Sartori lines[Bap 1759];
  2. Anna Maria: Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti, who was married to Giacomo's cousin, Giovanna Maria Piezzi, and Mrs. Maria (De Bernardi) Bettanta, Innocenza's sister[Bap 1760];
  3. Catterina: Giacomo Piezzi, cousin and brother to Giovanna Maria (above), and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Piezzi, the widow of Giacomo's late cousin Giovanni Battista Piezzi[Bap 1762];
  4. Giacomo Pietro: Giacomo Pietro Pozzi, who was married to Giacomo's cousin Maria Giacomina Cerini, and Mrs. Maria Catterina (Marchese) Pozzi, a Piezzi and Marchese cousin[Bap 1765];
  5. Maddalena: Giovanni Cerini, who had been married to Giacomo's late aunt Giovanna Maria Giumini, and Anna Maria Pozzi, daughter of Don Rodolfo Pozzi[Bap 1767];
  6. Margherita: no godparents named because of imminent death[Bap 1770];
  7. Giovanna Maria: Giovanni Pietro Sartori, Giacomo's cousin, and Giovanna Maria Pozzi, a Piezzi cousin[Bap 1770];
  8. Teresa6: Giuseppe Giovanotti, who married cousin Maria Domenica Piezzi two weeks later, and Maria Teresia Gasparini, a Piezzi cousin[Bap 1770];
  9. Maria Anna: Pietro Antonio Pozzi, husband of cousin Maria Catterina Marchese (above), and Mrs. Maria Catterina Pozzi, a Piezzi and Marchese cousin who five months earlier married Giacomo Pietro Pozzi (above)[Bap 1772];
  10. Giovanni: Giovanni Francesco Pozzi, son of Don Rodolfo Pozzi, and Mrs. Maria Maddalena (Eiani/Tognini) Tomasini, a Piezzi cousin[Bap 1776]; and
  11. Apollonia: Don Carlo Antonio Pozzi, son of the late Don Rodolfo Pozzi, and Maria Anna Bonetti, a Piezzi cousin.[Bap 1779]

Innocenza was named as the godmother to Giuseppe Giumini, Giacomo's cousin, a twin, in 1758.[Bap 1758]. Giacomo was named as godfather to Marianna Bettanta, Innocenza's niece, and recorded as Giovanni Giacomo Rizzoni[Bap 1762A]; Anna Maria Gasparini[Bap 1762B]; and to his first cousin, Giuseppe Maria Sartori.[Bap 1764]

The Giumini's first child, Giacomo Pietro Francesco, was born and died during a period when 10 parishioners, 6 of whom were infants, died from an unspecified malady.[Bap 1759, Dth 1759]

Eldest daughter Anna Maria was confirmed on June 16, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Anna Maria's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria Teresia (Sartori) Piezzi, the wife of Giacomo's cousin, Giacomo Piezzi.[Con 1761]

Four years later, children Anna Maria, Maria Catterina, Giacomo Pietro, and Maria Maddalena were all confirmed on July 29, 1769, when Giambattista Muggiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo. Their sponsoring godparents were named as:[Con 1769]

Giacomo in turn was named as sponsoring godfather to Giuseppe Maria Piezzi, his 4-year-old second cousin.[Con 1769]

On the morning of April 22, 1770, Innocenza gave birth to triplet girls, presumably identical. Margherita, the first named, was in such poor health that she was baptized at home, and not given godparents.[Bap 1770] Both Margherita and Giovanna, the second triplet, died 11 days later on May 3 and were buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1770] Of the three, only Teresia4, our ancestor, survived to adulthood.

Bishop Muggiasca returned to the valley seven years after his previous visit and confirmed daughters Maria Teresa5 and Maria Anna at the Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo in Gordevio on July 30, 1776. Their sponsoring godmothers were named as Maria G. Toschona (Toscona?) of Broglio, Val Lavizarra, and Maria Catterina Muscio of Someo.[Con 1776]

Giovanni Giacomo Giumini died on March 22, 1802, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was recorded to be in his 66th year,[Dth 1802] but more likely was 61 years old.

Maria Innocenza (De Bernardi) Giumini died on April 15, 1805, in her home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be in her 70th year, but was more likely 66 years old. She was also buried in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta the following day.[Dth 1805]

Maria (DE BERNARDI) BETTANTA (<1740->1773)

13. Maria [Giusta] De Bernardi was born before 1740, probably in Broglio, Val Lavizzara, Ticino, Switzerland. October 2017She married Giuseppe Coppi of Someo, who died before 1759, apparently without any children Afterward she remarried Giovanni Giacomo Bettanta, son of Matteo, on August 1, 1759, in Someo.[Mar 1759] Giacomo's late wife Maria Tognazzini died two months prior to his remarriage[Dth 1759A], and left him with at least two daughters, one of whom died two months after his remarriage. Maria and Giacomo had at least four children together:

-- Maria Teresa Bettanta (26) Feb 1748 7 Nov 1800 (52)
-- Giovanna Maria Bettanta 31 Oct 1750 12 Oct 1759 (8)

131. Marianna Bettanta 1 Apr 1762 --  --
132. Giovanna Caterina Bettanta 23 May 1763 --  --
133. Giovanna Maria Giusta Bettanta 7 Feb 1765 --  --
134. Giuseppe Antonio Bettanta 17 Jul 1769 --  --

July 2018Giuseppe Coppi was likely the one who died on June 2, 1754, at the family home in Someo. He was recorded to be "about 38 years" old and was buried the following day in the cemetery of Someo.[Dth 1754]

Maria and Giovanni Giacomo Bettanta married on August 1, 1759, in Someo. Witnesses to their marriage were Father Giovanni Pietro Neri, Chaplain of Someo, and Giacomo Antonio Coppi, son of the late Giacomo[Mar 1759], who may have been her late husband's brother.

Two months after Maria and Giacomo's marriage, Giacomo's eight-year-old daughter, Giovanna Maria, died on October 12, 1759, just two weeks short of her ninth birthday. She was buried at the cemtery in Someo.[Dth 1759B]

October 2017Maria and Giacomo chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Marianna: Giovanni Giacomo Rizzoni [Giumini]5, Maria's brother-in-law, and Mrs. Maria (Resighini) Martinoni[Bap 1762];
  2. Caterina: Giacomo Pietro Righetti and Mrs. Maria Margherita (Filipponi) Tomasini[Bap 1763], a possible Bettanta cousin;
  3. Giovanna: Pietro Bettantini and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Tognazzini) Pedrina[Bap 1765];
  4. Giuseppe Antonio: Giuseppe Tomasini and Mrs Anna Maria (Righetti) Tomasini (perhaps a mis-reference to Tognazzini).[Bap 1769]

Maria was in turn named as godmother to Giovanni Pietro Tognazzini[Bap 1759]; niece Anna Maria Giumini.[Bap 1760]; Maria Catarina Bettanta[Bap 1761A]; Giovanna Maria Bettanta[Bap 1761B], Giacomo's niece; and Maria Giovanna Bettanta[Bap 1761C], Giacomo's niece. She may also have been godmother to Maria Margherita Tomasini, but was recorded as "Maria Bettanta, wife of Giovanni Giacomo Bettanti."[Bap 1767]

Giovanni Giacomo Bettanta died on February 27, 1772, at the family home in Someo. He was recorded to be "about 58 years" old. He was buried the same day in the cemetery in Someo.[Dth 1772] He and Maria had been married 12 years.

July 2018Maria (recorded as "Maria Giusta") remarried 10 months later to Giovanni Pietro Bonetti, the son of the late Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti, on January 18, 1773, in Someo.[Mar 1773] Giovanni Pietro had been married to Giovanna Maria Jorio (1725-1772) for 31 years and had as many as eight children.

Giovanni Pietro Bonetti died seven months after his marriage on August 18, 1773, at the family home in Someo. He was recorded to be "about 46 years" old and was buried the following day in the cemetery in Someo.[Dth 1773]

Francesco DE BERNARDI (<1750->1759)

October 201714. Francesco De Bernardi was born before 1750, probably in Broglio, Val Lavizzara, Ticino, Switzerland. He is only known through one record, when he was named as godfather and likely a partial namesake to his sister's firstborn son, Giacomo Pietro Francesco Giumini[Bap 1759], but his nephew only lived 14 days.
