Family Histories:

TOGNAZZINI Family History, Part I

September 2019
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Work on the Tognazzini family was begun in earnest in May 2017, and is complicated by variations in Latin spellings. Observed spelling variations include: Togniazzini, Togniacini/Toniacini, and Tonazini. June 2017I suspect that Tognazzini could be an offshoot of the Tognazzi (Tonazi/Tonacci) family, both of which were esblished by the mid-1700s.

Because available microfilmed baptism records for Someo only go back as far as 1759, but marriage and death records reach back farther, this family history begins with Tognazzini families who had children in the 1760s and attempts to establish their immediate relatives and reconstruct the previous generation. As such, it focuses on three branches of Tognazzinis:

Tognetti

The Tognetti family is an offshoot of the Tognazzinis, as recorded when Domenico Tognazzini married and his father was identified as "Antonio Tognazzini called Tognetti" in 1761. Later in 1769, Antonio's grandson, Antonio Tognetti, was baptized in 1769, the "son of Giuseppe, son of the late Antonio Tonazini called Tognetti."

Guzzi of Riveo

The family of Pietro Paolo Guzzi (~1693-1736), son of Carlo of Riveo, may have been an offshoot of the Tognazzini family, as indicated by a 1717 marriage record in Cevio that recorded him as "Petrus Paulus ["Guzza" inserted above] Tonaccinus." The record for the same marriage in Someo recorded him as "Petrus Paulus Guzzius." His four daughters all died in childhood and the name Guzzi died with him in 1736.

Fachini of Someo

June 2019Two parishioners recorded as "Fachini" between 1701 and 1706 were later correlated to Tognazzinis:

Giovanni Giacomo Fachini/Tognazzini (~1677-1744), son of Domenico, married Maria Maddalena MUSCIO (~1683-1718) on February 18, 1705, as a "Fachini" and remarried as a "Tognazzini" three weeks after her death to Giovanna Battista Camani (~1682-1740) on April 25, 1718.

Benevenuta Fachini/Tognazzini (~1674-1746), daughter of Antonio, who married Giovanni Battista Coppi on March 21, 1706, as a "Fachini" and died as a "Tognazzini".

Antognazzi & Tonascia

So far I have not seen cause to suspect that the Antognazzi (also Antoniazzi or Antoniaci/Antoneaci) nor the Tonascia families are related to the Tognazzini family.

Giovanni Antonio TOGNAZZINI2 (~1668-1744)

11.January 2019Giovanni Antonio Tognazzini2 was born to Gaspare Tognazzini1 about 1667 or 1668, probably in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. He married Maria Muscio, daughter of Antonio, before 1724, but it is unclear if she was the mother of this son:

111. Giovanni Pietro Tognazzini3 (1709) (4 Feb 1748) (38)
Tognazzini-Muscio Connections
January 2019Domenico Muscio2, son of the late Antonio1, chose Maria Muscio, daughter of the late Antonio1 and wife of Giovanni Antonio Tognazzini2, as godmother daughter Maria3.[Bap 1724] Father and godmother were apparently siblings, however, Muscio's daughter and Tognazzini's grandson, Giovanni Domenico Tognazzini4, later wed but were not found to have been related.[Mar 1747]

Maria was named as godmother and apparent namesake to likely niece Maria Muscio2.[Bap 1724]

Giovanni Antonio Tognazzini died on April 22, 1744, at his home in Someo and was buried the following day in the parish cemetery of Someo. He was "about 76 years" old.[Dth 1744]

Maria (Muscio) Tognazzini died two years later on October 22, 1746, at her home in Someo. She was buried the following day in the parish cemetery. She was "about 65 years" old.[Dth 1746]

Giovanni Pietro TOGNAZZINI3 (~1709-1748)

111.Giovanni Pietro Tognazzini3 was born about 1709, probably in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. October 2017He married Maria Domenica Perini3 on February 3, 1728, in Someo. They had as many as six children:

1111. Maria Margherita Tognazzini 16 Jan 1732 --  --
1112. Gio. Domenico Tognazzini (Sr.)4 (< 1733) (> 1764) (> 31)
1113. (Giacomina) Maria Tognazzini (18 Sep 1734) 16 Jul 1738 (3)
1114. Giovanna Maria Tognazzini 1 Oct 1739 13 Aug 1741 (22 mos.)
1115. Antonio Maria Tognazzini 2 May 1744 10 Sep 1744 (4 mos.)

Giovanni Pietro and Domenica married on February 3, 1728, at the parish church in Someo. They were married the same day as four other couples: Giacomo Pietro Coppi and Maria Elena Morganti; Giovanni Pietro Coppi and Maria Lucia Tognini; Giovanni Giacomo Giacometti and Maria Maddalena Tognini; and Giovanni Pietro Coppi and Maria Margherita Righetti. Witnesses to their union were Giovanni Pietro Coppi and Domenica's brother Giovanni Battista Perini. Battista also served as witnesses to all the other couples that day.[Mar 1728]

Giovanni Pietro in turn served as witness to the marriages of Giovanni Antonio Lanotti & Giacoma Dalidio (1744); Giovanni Antonio Tognazzini & Giovanna Maria Martocchi (1744); Giovanni Pietro Tomasini & Maria Margherita Muscio (1745); Giuseppe Guerra & the widow Mrs. Maria Elena (Tomasini Franscioni) Coppi (1745); Giovanni Antonio Bettanta & Maria Elena Pedretti (1746); Giovanni Pietro Guerra & Maria Margherita Perini (1746); Giovanni Giacomo Camani (Jr.) & Margherita Morganti (1746); Giovanni Antonio Pezzoni & Maria Margherita Righetti (1746); Giacomo Bonetti & Anna Maria Righetti (1746); Giovanni Battista Tognazzi & Maria Domenica Del Ponte (1746); Giovanni Tomasini & the widow Mrs. Giacoma (Coppi) Tognini (1746); Giacomo Maria Dalidio (Jr.) & Maria Anna Pezzoni (1746); son Giovanni Domenico Tognazzini4 & Maria Muscio (1747); Giuseppe Righetti & Maria Margherita Pedretti (1747); and Giovanni Antonio CamanĂ²i (Camani) & Anna Maria Guerra (1747).

Giovanni Pietro Tognazzini died sometime after the marriage of son Domenico in 1747[Mar 1747] and before the birth of granddaughter Maria Giovanna Tomasini in 1759.[Bap 1760] As such he was likely the one who died unexpectedly on February 4, 1748, at his home in Someo. He was recorded to have been about 38 years old.[Dth 1748]

Maria Domenica (Perini) Tognazzini died on January 11, 1752, at her home in Someo, and was buried the following day in cemetery in Someo. She was reported to be about 40 years old.[Dth 1752]

Pietro TOGNAZZINI (Sr.) (~1689-1754)

X.Pietro Tognazzini (Sr.) was born around 1688 or 1689, likely in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland, to Antonio Tognazzini. May 2018His first wife may have been Maria Coppi, daughter of Zaccaria, who died in 1743. Pietro remarried to the widow Mrs. Margherita (Zulielmi/Zanielmi) Bettanta in 1744. Pietro and his first wife likely had as many as four children:

X1. Giovanna Maria Tognazzini (1727-1728) (13 Nov 1765) (37)
X2. Giovanni Giacomo Tognazzini (1731-1732) 2 Apr 1750 (18)
X3. Pietro Tognazzini (Jr.) (< 1733) (> 1772) (> 39)
X4. Antonio Tognazzini (< 1751) (> 1764) (> 13)

Maria (Coppi) Tognazzini died on January 22, 1743, at the family home in Someo. She was "about 48" years old and was buried the following day in the cemetery in Someo.[Dth 1743]

A year and a half later, Pietro remarried to Margherita Zulielmi/Zanielmi, the daughter of Antonio of Moghegno and widow of Matteo Bettanta, on June 29, 1744--a date which would have been Margherita and Matteo's 11th anniversary. Witnesses to their marriage were the Reverend Cleric Fabio Barazzi, a likely relative of Father Domenico Barazzi, Vicar of Someo, who presided over their marriage; and Giovanni Giacomo Coppi, son of Giovanni Battista.[Mar 1744]

Pietro Tognazzini died on December 14, 1754, at his home in Someo, and buried in the cemetry in Someo the following day. He was reported to be "about 65 years" old.[Dth 1754]

Margherita (Zulielmi/Zanielmi Bettanta) Tognazzini died on November 8, 1765, at her home in Someo. She had suffered a prolonged illness but on the day of her death she passed unexpectedly and was unable to receive all the final sacraments. Margherita was "about 73" years old.[Dth 1765]

Giovanni Domenico TOGNAZZINI (Sr.) (-<1743)

Y.October 2017 Giovanni Domenico Tognazzini (Sr.) was likely born in Someo, Ticino, Switzerland. He is so far only known through the parish records of three likely children who all had children around the same time, however, confirmation that they were all siblings is pending:

Y1. Giovanni Antonio Tognazzini (1723-1724) (18 Mar 1760) (36)
Y2. Domenico Tognazzini (Jr.) (< 1740) (> 1763) (> 23)
Y3. Giovanna Maria Tognazzini (1728-1729) 18 Feb 1783 (54)
