Giovanni Giacomo GIUMINI5 (1740-1802)

134C1. Giovanni Giacomo Giumini5 was born on September 2, 1740, Giumaglio, Ticino, Switzerland. He was apparently named for his paternal grandfather with whom he and his parents lived around the time he was born. His godparents were his maternal uncle, Giovanni Sartori, and Maria Piezzi, perhaps one of his great aunts on his father's maternal side.

Giacomo married Maria Innocenza De Bernardi2 of the town of Broglio, 14 kilometers upriver from Giumaglio. They had at least 11 children, including one set of triplet daughters:

134C1K. Maria Apollonia Giumini 10 Mar 1779 16 Nov 1779 (8 mos.)

Giacomo stayed with his mother after his father died, probably in the 1750s, and continued to live with his mother after marrying and starting his family. He likely assumed the family home after her death sometime before 1795.[Cen 1760-1795]

The Giuminis chose the following godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomo Pietro Francesco: Francesco De Bernardi, Innocenza's brother, and Domenica Gasparini, Giacomo's cousin on their maternal Sartori lines[Bap 1759];
  2. Anna Maria: Giovanni Antonio Giovanotti, who was married to Giacomo's cousin, Giovanna Maria Piezzi, and Mrs. Maria (De Bernardi) Bettanta, Innocenza's sister[Bap 1760];
  3. Catterina: Giacomo Piezzi, cousin and brother to Giovanna Maria (above), and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Pozzi) Piezzi, the widow of Giacomo's late cousin Giovanni Battista Piezzi[Bap 1762];
  4. Giacomo Pietro: Giacomo Pietro Pozzi, who was married to Giacomo's cousin Maria Giacomina Cerini, and Mrs. Maria Catterina (Marchese) Pozzi, a Piezzi and Marchese cousin[Bap 1765];
  5. Maddalena: Giovanni Cerini, who had been married to Giacomo's late aunt Giovanna Maria Giumini, and Anna Maria Pozzi, daughter of Don Rodolfo Pozzi[Bap 1767];
  6. Margherita: no godparents named because of imminent death[Bap 1770];
  7. Giovanna Maria: Giovanni Pietro Sartori, Giacomo's cousin, and Giovanna Maria Pozzi, a Piezzi cousin[Bap 1770];
  8. Teresa6: Giuseppe Giovanotti, who married cousin Maria Domenica Piezzi two weeks later, and Maria Teresia Gasparini, a Piezzi cousin[Bap 1770];
  9. Maria Anna: Pietro Antonio Pozzi, husband of cousin Maria Catterina Marchese (above), and Mrs. Maria Catterina Pozzi, a Piezzi and Marchese cousin who five months earlier married Giacomo Pietro Pozzi (above)[Bap 1772];
  10. Giovanni: Giovanni Francesco Pozzi, son of Don Rodolfo Pozzi, and Mrs. Maria Maddalena (Eiani/Tognini) Tomasini, a Piezzi cousin[Bap 1776]; and
  11. Apollonia: Don Carlo Antonio Pozzi, son of the late Don Rodolfo Pozzi, and Maria Anna Bonetti, a Piezzi cousin.[Bap 1779]

Innocenza was named as the godmother to Giuseppe Giumini, Giacomo's cousin, a twin, in 1758.[Bap 1758]. Giacomo was named as godfather to Marianna Bettanta, Innocenza's niece, and recorded as Giovanni Giacomo Rizzoni[Bap 1762A]; Anna Maria Gasparini[Bap 1762B]; and to his first cousin, Giuseppe Maria Sartori.[Bap 1764]

The Giumini's first child, Giacomo Pietro Francesco, was born and died during a period when 10 parishioners, 6 of whom were infants, died from an unspecified malady.[Bap 1759, Dth 1759]

Eldest daughter Anna Maria was confirmed on June 16, 1761, when Giovanni Battista Albrici, Count Peregrini, Bishop of Como (1760-1764) held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Anna Maria's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria Teresia (Sartori) Piezzi, the wife of Giacomo's cousin, Giacomo Piezzi.[Con 1761]

Four years later, children Anna Maria, Maria Catterina, Giacomo Pietro, and Maria Maddalena were all confirmed on July 29, 1769, when Giambattista Muggiasca, Bishop of Como (1765-1789), held confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo. Their sponsoring godparents were named as:[Con 1769]

Giacomo in turn was named as sponsoring godfather to Giuseppe Maria Piezzi, his 4-year-old second cousin.[Con 1769]

On the morning of April 22, 1770, Innocenza gave birth to triplet girls, presumably identical. Margherita, the first named, was in such poor health that she was baptized at home, and not given godparents.[Bap 1770] Both Margherita and Giovanna, the second triplet, died 11 days later on May 3 and were buried the following day at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1770] Of the three, only Teresia4, our ancestor, survived to adulthood.

Bishop Muggiasca returned to the valley seven years after his previous visit and confirmed daughters Maria Teresa5 and Maria Anna at the Church of Santi Giacomo e Filippo in Gordevio on July 30, 1776. Their sponsoring godmothers were named as Maria G. Toschona (Toscona?) of Broglio, Val Lavizarra, and Maria Catterina Muscio of Someo.[Con 1776]

Giovanni Giacomo Giumini died on March 22, 1802, at his home in Giumaglio. He was buried the following day in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was recorded to be in his 66th year,[Dth 1802] but more likely was 61 years old.

Maria Innocenza (De Bernardi) Giumini died on April 15, 1805, in her home in Giumaglio. She was recorded to be in her 70th year, but was more likely 66 years old. She was also buried in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta the following day.[Dth 1805]
