Charles Sylvester FISHERΔ (1876-1949)
1CD2. Charles Sylvester FisherΔ was born on May 11, 1876, in Bloomington, Franklin County, Nebraska. Charles married Verna Mae Wiles, a native of Illionis, on November 9, 1916, in Rock County, north-central Nebraska. They had six children:
The 1898 Great Register of Voters records a Charles Fisher in 1898 who was described as age 22, 6' 6" tall, light complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. He was a laborer from Nebraska who resided in Healdsburg No. 1.[Vote 1898]
The potential correlation of this Charles to Charles Sylvester is based solely on name, age, birth state, and uncommonly tall height. Son Rocky's daughter confirmed that Rocky was 6' 2" and that Charles was even taller.
Charles may have migrated to California for a time with uncle, John Jackson Fisher3, who settled in Sonoma County, and could be the Charles Fisher found there in Healdsburg in 1898[Vote 1898]. He returned to his mother and siblings in Kearney, Buffalo County, by 1900, and worked there as a farm laborer.[Cen 1900]
After Charles' marriage, he worked as a track man on the rail road in Kearney.[Cen 1920] He and his family stayed there through the birth of son Staten in 1923.

The Fishers moved up the Wood River about 31 miles northwest of Kearny to Sumner, Dawson County, by the birth of son Bob in 1923. There they farmed through at least 1940.[Cen 1930,1940]
Sons Rocky and Bill served in World War II--Rocky in the Pacific, having enlisted in 1940, and Bill in North Africa, having enlisted in 1942. Bill's tank (mobile artillery vehicle) was struck during the Tunisia Campaign but the shell did not immediately explode. He helped evacuate the crew but the shell exploded before he was able to jump off the vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and had most of his lungs removed, yet survived to marry a nurse who cared for him and lived another 23 years. Bill was awarded a Silver Star.
Charles Sylvester Fisher died on July 24, 1949, in Kearney and was buried in Kearney Cemetery. He was 73 years old.
After Charles' death, son Bob was called up for service in the Korean War and served for eight months in Korea with the Oklahoma National Guard.
Verna went on to remarry to Frank Ireland and lived in Oakland, Alameda County, California by the 1950s.
