BEAMAN Family History, Part III

Eli BEAMAN (1813-1896)

1B2A. Eli Beaman was born on October, 13, 1813, Montgomery County, North Carolina. He moved with his family to Owen County, Indiana, in 1823 according to the record in his Bible. Eli married his cousin Tereezer Langdon on November 3, 1831, in Owen County and they had eight children. She died in 1848 and Eli remarried the following year to Mary Starnes and had four more children:

Samuel acquired 40 acres on the edge of Jackson Township (Township 11 North, Range 4 West, Southwest quarter of Southwest quarter of Section 9), Owen County, in September 1836.

On January 22, 1843, Eli was ordained as a deacon in the "Little Flock Baptist Church" which was formed the year before, mostly by Beamans.

Tereeza (Langdon) Beaman died on July 24, 1848, in Owen County. She was only about 36 years old. Her six children were aged 2 through 15.

Eli acquired the adjacent plot of land to the north on the edge of Jackson (Township 11 North, Range 4 West, Northwest quarter of Northwest quarter of Section 9) from his cousin, Alvin, in January 1849.

Eli remarried to Mary Starnes on November 1, 1849. She was about 27 years old, nine years younger than Eli, and took on raising Eli's six children, ages 3 through 16. They also took in Eli's aunt Catharine (Beaman) Langdon, who was also happened to be Tereeza's step-grandmother by 1850 and through 1860.^{[Cen 1850-1860]}

Eli Beaman died on June 15, 1896, in Owen County, Indiana, at the age of 82.

Mary (Starnes) Beaman died 13 years later on October 20, 1909. She was about 87 years old.

Edith (BEAMAN) HICKS

1B2B. Edith Beaman was born about 1816 or 1817 in North Carolina, likely in Montgomery County. She married Reuben Hicks on May 9, 1836, two months after her brother Jacob married Reuben's sister. They lived in Knox Township, Clarke County, Iowa, by 1856 and moved to Long Creek Township, Decatur County, Iowa, by 1860. The Hicks moved again to Maple Township, Monona County, Iowa, by 1870.

Jacob BEAMAN (~1819)

1B2C. Jacob Beaman was born about 1819 in North Carolina, likely in Montgomery County, and moved with his family to Owen County, Indiana, in 1823 or 1824. He married Rachel Hicks on March 10, 1836, in Owen County, Indiana. Two months later, Jacob's sister Edith married Rachel's brother. They had at least nine children, all born in Indiana except youngest William, who was born in Iowa:

The Beamans lived in Jackson Township, Owen County, near his brother Eli, uncle Samuel (Sr.), and cousin Mary (Beaman) Parish^{[Cen 1850]}.

The Beamans moved to Pleasant Grove Township, Marion County, Iowa, by 1854.^{[Cen 1856]}

Rachel (Hicks) Beaman died about 1856. She was only about 34 years old.

Jacob resettled in Long Creek Township, Decatur County, Iowa, by 1860^{[Cen 1860]}, leaving his children scattered through Pleasant Grove, Franklin, and Union townships.

John W. BEAMAN (1820-1882)

1B2D. John W. Beaman was born on August 20, 1820, in Montgomery County, North Carolina. He married Mary Lucas and had six children:

He moved with many of his brothers and sisters and mother to Decatur County, Iowa, around 1853. He applied for several land patents in 1853 and 1854 in Long Creek and Richland townships but returned to Owen County, Indiana, by 1860. He remained in Owen County until 1874 after which he moved to Morgan Township, Harrison County, Iowa.

John W. Beaman died on June 3, 1882, in Morgan Township, at the age of 61.

Mary (Lucas) Beaman died ten years later on July 27, 1892, in Morgan Township. She was 75 years old.

Bryant BEAMAN (Jr.) (1825-1909)

1B2E. Bryant Beaman (Jr.) was born on September 19, 1825, in either North Carolina or Indiana, likely in Morgan Township, Owen County. He married Dicy Ann Lucas and had as many as seven daughters and one son:

Bryant bought 80 acres of land in Morgan Township, near Atkinsonville, in January 1848 from his stepfather, Noah Randall. Noah originally bought the land in 1846 from Willis and Nancy Reynolds. In October 1848, Bryant sold half the land (Township 11 North, Range 4 West, Southeast quarter of Northeast quarter of Section 21) to his younger brother, Samuel.

Bryant, many of his brothers and sisters, and his mother, moved to Decatur County, in south-central Iowa, where they settled in Long Creek Township by 1852^{[Cen 1856]}, but by 1860, he, his sister Catharine and her family, moved two counties north to Otter Township, Warren County, Iowa.^{[Cen 1860]} Bryant and Dicy continued west to the southern portion of Morgan Township, Harrison County, Iowa, where they finally settled by 1864^{[Cen 1870]}

Bryant Beaman died on March 13, 1909, in Harrison County, Iowa, at the age of 83. He is buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Magnolia, Harrison County.

Dicy Ann (Lucas) Beaman died two years later in Harrison County, in her early 80s. She is also buried at Magnolia Cemetery.

Ezekiel BEAMAN⁴ (~1827-1865)

1B2F. Ezekiel Beaman⁴ was born around 1827 in Owen County, Indiana. He married Mary "Palley" Nichols on March 19, 1843, in Owen County. They had as many as ten children:

The family left Owen County by 1854 and moved to Decatur County, Iowa. In 1856 they lived in Long Creek Township next to his brothers, sisters, and mother.^{[Cen 1856]} By 1860 they moved northeast to Union Township, Warren County, Iowa,^{[Cen 1860]} and probably moved back southwest to Doyle Township, Clarke County, Iowa, in the early 1860s.

Ezekiel Beaman died on December 7, 1865, like in Clarke County. He is buried at Hopeville Cemetery in Doyle Township.

After Ezekiel's death, Mary continued to live in Doyle Township^{[Cen 1870]}. She later remarried to Robert Combs after 1870.

Mary "Palley" (Nichols Beaman) Combs died on April 4, 1892, in Clarke County. She is buried at Hopeville Cemetery, Hopeville, Clarke County.

Samuel BEAMAN (~1829-)

1B2G. Samuel Beaman was born in 1828 or 1829 in Indiana.

Samuel bought half of an 80-acre parcel of land in Morgan Township (Township 11N Range 4 West, Section 21, Southeast quarter of Northeast quarter), near Atkinsonville, from his elder brother Bryant in October 1848. There, in 1850, Samuel and his three younger sisters (Mary, Patsey, and Catharina) were enumerated together next-door to Bryant and their mother and stepfather. A 4-year-old William (likely William C(asbell) Beaman) was also listed with Samuel and his sisters.^{[Cen 1850]}

Samuel sold the Morgan Township parcel in March 1852 to Abraham Coffman.

By 1854, Samuel, many of his brothers and sisters, and his mother, moved to Decatur County, Iowa, where he applied for a patent on land in Long Creek Township in February 1854.

Mary Ann (BEAMAN BLADES) NAPIER (~1831-)

1B2H. Mary Ann Beaman was probably born between 1831 and 1835. She was baptized on September 2, 1849, along with her sisters, Patsy and Catherine, at Union Baptist Church. She married Jehu (John) Blades around 1855, probably in Decatur County, Iowa. She was about 23 years old and he about 51. John may have had one son from a previous marriage:

Mary Ann, many of her brothers and sisters, and her mother, moved to Decatur County, Iowa, where they settled in Long Creek Township by 1852. John had lived in Iowa since around 1848.^{[Cen 1856]}

Jehu "John" Blades died in 1878 at about the age of 78.

After John's death, Mary Ann moved to be with her family in Harrison County, Iowa, and remarried there to James Napier in 1882.

Martha J. "Patsy" (BEAMAN) BARGER (1836-)

1B2I. Martha J. "Patsy" Beaman was probably born in May 1836 in Indiana. She was baptized on September 2, 1849, along with her sisters, Polly and Catharine, at Union Baptist Church. She married Charles Barger and had eight children, of whom only two survived through 1900:^{[Cen 1900]}

Martha, many of her brothers and sisters, and her mother, moved to Decatur County, Iowa, where they settled in Long Creek Township by 1852.

Martha and Charles are first recorded as a couple in Pleasant Grove Township, Marion County, Iowa, where Martha likely moved around 1852 and Charles moved around 1855. There they lived next to Martha's mother and elder brothers Bryant (Jr.) and Ezekiel.^{[Cen 1856]}

By 1870, the Bargers followed Catherine's brother, Bryant, to Harrison County, Iowa, and settled in Morgan Township. In 1880 they were enumerated in the census in neighboring Clay Township to the south of Morgan Township.^{[Cen 1880]}

The Bargers moved west to Fall River County in the southwest corner of South Dakota where, in December 1893, they acquired a 160-acre homestead in Township 7 South, Range 8, south of the Black Hills along the Cheyenne River northeast of Oral.^{[Cen 1900]}

Catharine (BEAMAN) CLINKENBEARD (~1831-)

1B2J. Catharine Beaman was probably born between 1831 and 1835. She was baptized on September 2, 1849, along with her sisters, Mary Ann and Patsy, at Union Baptist Church. She married Emsley Clinkenbeard.

Catharine, her mother and step-father, and many of her brothers and sisters moved to Decatur County, Iowa, where they settled in Long Creek Township by 1852. Catharine wed and by 1856 her mother, stepfather, and 12-year-old William C(asbell) Beaman lived with the young couple.^{[Cen 1856]}

The Clinkenbeards and Catharine's mother, stepfather, and William moved to Otter Township, Warren County, Iowa, by 1860 where her brother, Bryant lived nearby.^{[Cen 1860]} By 1870, Catharine's family and mother followed Bryant to Raglan Township, Harrison County, Iowa.^{[Cen 1870]}

Samuel BEAMAN (Jr.) (1818)

1B43. Samuel Beaman (Jr.) was born on April 20, 1818, in Montgomery County, North Carolina, and moved to Owen County, Indiana, with his parents in 1823 or 1824. Samuel married Lucinda B. Rogers, a native of Kentucky, and had at least 10 children:

The Beamans lived in Jennings Township (later associated with Cataract Post Office) to the east and northeast of their kin in Jackson and Morgan townships, in 1850. Then they had six children between the ages of 2 and 11.^{[Cen 1850]}

The family continued on in Jennings Township through 1870. By 1860, Eldest daughter Rachel had either died or married and moved out, and son Charlie, who would have been 16 years old, likely died.^{[Cen 1860]} By 1870, son James started his own family and was living nearby; John was living at home; Nancy had married, but was living at home with her one-year-old daughter Theodocia Orick; and Mary and Jane were still at home. Lucinda's mother also lived next to the Beamans in 1870.^{[Cen 1870]}

Samuel continued on to Missouri where he applied for his Civil War pension in 1890.
