SARTORI Family History, Part II

March 2016
Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

The family name Sartori likely comes from the Italian sarto, which means "tailor."

Giovanna (SARTORI) MOLINARI (~1651->1703)

February 20151X. Giovanna Sartori was born about 1651, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She is tentatively correlated as a sister of Giovanni Pietro Sartori2, both of whom were named as godparents in 1683.[Bap 1683] Giovanna married Giacomo Pietro Molinari (Reit/Raitini) (Sr.) in 1674 and had three children:

1X1. Lucia Molinari/Reit 8 Jun 1675 9 Aug 1722 (47)
1X2. Maria Maddalena Molinari/Reit 12 Feb 1677 13 Aug 1688 (11)
1X3. Giacomo Pietro Molinari/Reit (Jr.) 17 Sep 1678 (1708-1710) (32)

Giovanna and Giacomo Pietro wed on May 26, 1674, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediments consanguinity in two lines--one of the third and fourth degree (i.e., second cousins once removed) and one of the fourth degree (i.e., third cousins). The exact connections of their relationships are not yet known. Dispensation was coordinated with the Nuncio Apostolic to Switzerland in Lucerne and approved the day before their wedding. Recorded witnesses were Gaspare Gaspari and Giovanni Giacomo (Giumini?).[Mar 1674]

March 2015All three children were baptized with the family name of "Reit or Molinari." Later Reit also appeared as "Raitini" between 1692 and 1699; and both Lucia and Giacomo (Jr.) appeared briefly as "Bonettis." Afterward the name settled back on Molinari. Reit was also seen during the same time frame as a variant for the Righettis of Someo.

Giovanna and Giacomo Pietro chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Lucia: Giovanni Pozzi and Giacomina Sartori, perhaps Giovanna's younger sister[Bap 1675B];
  2. Maddalena: Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Domenica Sartori, also likely Giovanna's younger sister[Bap 1677]; and
  3. Giacomo Pietro (Jr.): Giovanni Pozzi (Jr.) and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Cerini.[Bap 1678]

Giovanna was named as godmother to Pietro Antonio Pozzi[Bap 1673]; Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti (as the daughter of Giacomo)[Bap 1679]; Giovanni Giumini (along with brother Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 as godfather)[Bap 1683]; Giacomo Pietro Stolfi[Bap 1684]; niece Maria Maddalena Sartori (along with son Giacomo Pietro "Raitini" as godfather).[Bap 1692] Giacomo Pietro "Reit" was named as godfather to Catterina Giumini (along with Giovanna's likely younger sister Giacomina).[Bap 1675A]

In the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. The Molinari family was confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time Giovanna's sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Domenica (Gaspari) Langeri; Lucia's as Mrs. Maria (Rossini) Marca; and Maddalena's as Giovanna Giumini. Giacomo Pietro appears not to have attended, as was frequently the case with the men. Giovanna was in turn named as godmother to Mrs. (Rossini) Marca and Domenica Rossetti.[Con 1677]

Giacomo Pietro Molinari (Sr.) died at the age of 27 in his home in Giumaglio on November 18, 1678. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1678] He left Giovanna with three children between the age of 2 months and 2 years.

Curiously, none of Giovanna's family is found in the parish census of 1692. From 1698 through 1703 she is found living wiith her son Giacomo Pietro Raitini and his wife Maria Domenica Marchese.[Cen 1698-1703] While the three censuses all named her son as a Raitini, other records are not so consistent.

As for Lucia, she was also baptized as a "Reit or Molinari" and then her name alternated between Molinari and Bonetti over time:

Note that the varying names largely occured during the 28-year-long tenure of Father Pietro Giacomo Pozzi (1668-1696), a native of Giumaglio, so the variations likely reflect actual changes going on at that time rather than inconsistencies that could be attributed to turnover of priests. In the eight years following Father Pozzi's death in 1696, there was such turnover with three priests from towns well to the south of Giumaglio having successively tended the parish. During this period Lucia's family name was fixed as Bonetti and Giacomo Pietro's as Molinari.

Daughter Maria Maddalena "Molinari or Reit" died on August 13, 1688, and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. She was reported to be 12 years old, but was 11.[Dth 1688]

Giovanna (Sartori) Molinari was last recorded in 1703 while living with her son Giacomo Pietro.[Cen 1709] None of the family was found in the 1709 parish census[Cen 1709], so it is unclear what became of Giovanna after 1703. Giovanna was reportedly 52 years old in 1703.[Cen 1703]

Giacomina (SARTORI) POZZI (~1657-1689)

1X. Giacomina Sartori was born about 1657, probably in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was daughter to Giacomo Sartori1, presumably our ancestor, and married Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi of Giumaglio in 1676. They are not known to have had any children during their 13-year marriage.

Prior to her marriage, Giacomina (as the daughter of Giacomo) was likely named as godmother to Catterina Giumini (along with likely brother-in-law Giacomo Pietro "Reit" (Molinari))[Bap 1675A]; likely niece Lucia Reit (Molinari)[Bap 1675]; and Pietro Paolo Gaspari.[Bap 1676]

June 2015Giacomina and Giacomo wed on April 24, 1676, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediments of consanguinity (i.e., cousins) in two lines: one to the third and fourth degrees (i.e., second cousins, once removed) and the other to the fourth degree (i.e. third cousins). The exact connections of their relationships are not yet known. Recorded witnesses were Giacomo Pozzi, Gaspare Gaspari, and Giovanni Giacomo Ianzini.[Mar 1676]

During the last week of May 1677, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giacomina and Giacomo were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time Catterina Pozzi was named as her sponsoring godmother and Giacomo's sponsoring godfather was Father Pietro Giacomo Pozzi, Vicar of Giumaglio. Giacomina was in turn named as godmother to Giacomo's niece Maria Domenica Marchese and Giacomo was named as godfather to five parishioners.[Con 1677]

Giacomina (Sartori) Pozzi died on December 2, 1689, in her home in Giumaglio. She was about 32 years old. Giacomina was buired the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1689] She and Giacomo had been married 13 years.

Giacomo apparently went on to remarry three months later to Giovanna Maria Bassi of Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. They had as many as eight children together. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi died on January 26, 1720, while in his late 60s.

Domenica SARTORI (<1666->1678)

March 201511. Domenica Sartori, a daughter of our Giacomo Sartori1 [Con 1677] and likely a sister of Giovanna (Sartori) Molinari[Bap 1677], was probably born in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Based on the fact that she was named as a godmother in 1676[Bap 1676], she was likely born sometime before 1666. Domenica so far is known primarily through baptism records that name her as godmother to Giovanna Maria Mazzini[Bap 1676]; likely niece Maria Maddalena Molinari[Bap 1677]; and Anna Cerini.[Bap 1678]

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Domenica was confirmed either with her mother at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22 or with her younger brother Giovanni Pietro2 at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time her sponsoring godmother was named as Mrs. Maria (Mazzini) Pozzi, who had been named godmother to Domenica's brother Giovanni Pietro2 at his baptism. Domenica in turn was named as godmother to five parish girls between the ages of 2 to 14: Giovanna Adami, at Maggia; and Catterina Gaspari, Giovanna Giumini, Maria Cerini, and Lucia Pozzi, her godmother Maria's daughter, at Someo.[Con 1677A-B]

No further records are found in the parish of Giumaglio after 1678, suggesting she may have died or married and moved to another parish.

Giovanni Pietro SARTORI2 (1668-1744)

May 201412. Giovanni Pietro Sartori2 was born about Friday, 29 June 1668, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized that day. His godparents were named as Giovanni Lesina "the elder" (who was married to Giovanna Sartori, daughter of the late Giacomo Sartori) and Maria Mazzini.[Bap 1668] Pietro may have married as many as three or four times. He first married Margherita Teresa Cerini, his third cousin, in 1687, and had at least six children before her death. Next, he maried Maria Margherita (Pozzi) Gaspari, the widow of Daniele Gaspari[Mar 1711], but she died within in a year. Then came Maria Catterina Terini/Marchese2 in 1712.[Mar 1712] They had four children together. Finally, Pietro may have been married yet once more to another woman named Margherita. All together, Pietro fathered as many as 12 children over the span of 33 years:

Morètt
The name "Morètt" was first observed in 1683 with Pietro's father as "Morettinus" to distinguish him from another Giacomo of similar age who was identified as "Grefius."[Con 1683] Pietro was referred to as a "Morètt" on three occasions. The first was as a witness to the marriage of Benedetto Pozzi and Margherita Cerini as "Joanne Petro Moretti."[Mar 1704] Later, in son Giuseppe's baptism record, he was named as "Joanne Petro, of the late Jacobi Sartori called 'Moret'."[Bap 1723] Finally, posthumously, his daughter was named as a godmother--"Maria Magdalena, of the late Joannis Petri Sartore [called] 'Moretto'."[Bap 1748]

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Pietro was confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, as was his sister Domenica, at which time his sponsoring godfather was named as Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, doctor of Giumaglio.[Con 1677]

Pietro and his wives chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomo (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi (Jr.) and Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi, likely Margherita's sister and the wife of Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town doctor and don[Bap 1690A];
  2. Maddalena (elder): Pietro Giacomo Raitini (Molinari) and Giovanna Sartori, possibly Raitini's mother[Bap 1692];
  3. Giovanna: Giovanni Giacomo Gaspari and Mrs. Lucia (Molinari/Bonetti) Cantoni[Bap 1693];
  4. Pietro: Giovanni Angelo Pozzi and Giacomina Pozzi.[Bap 1695B]
  5. Domenica: Giovanni Antonio Marchese and Maria Domenica Marchese[Bap 1697];
  6. Giovanni: Giovanni Antonio Cantoni and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Caneverini of Coglio[Bap 1698];
  7. Giacomo (younger): Pietro Gaspari and Giacomina Mazzini[Bap 1703A];
  8. Margherita: Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Jr.) and Mrs. Maria (Gasparini) Pozzi[Bap 1708A/B];
  9. Maddalena3 (younger): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and Maria Marta Giumini[Bap 1716A];
  10. Pietro: Giovanni Giacomo Bonetti and Giovanna Maria Terrini (Marchese?), perhaps Catterina's sister[Bap 1718];
  11. Giovanna (younger): Carlo Marchese, Catterina's elder brother, and Mrs. Giovanna Maria (Giumini) Lesina[Bap 1720]; and
  12. Giuseppe: Giovanni Delnotaro of Coglio and Mrs. Giacomina (Tognini) Marchese.[Bap 1723]

Pietro was named as godfather to Giovanni Giumini (along with his sister Giovanna as godmother)[Bap 1683A]; Giovanna Sartori[Bap 1683B]; Giovanni Antonio Marchese[Bap 1690B]; Domenica Pozzi[Bap 1695A]; Maria Maddalena Adami[Bap 1702]; and, on behalf of Carlo Francesco Lesina, to Carlo's niece, Elena Lucia Lesina.[Bap 1703B] He was also godfather to Maria Domenica Giumini[Bap 1708C], Giovanni Battista Pozzi[Bap 1708D], Maria Domenica Mazzini[Bap 1716B], and Maria Domenica Giumini.[Bap 1722]

Margherita Teresa Cerini

Pietro and Margherita Teresia wed on February 26, 1687, at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Alessio Pozzi, and Giovanni Antonio Cerini.

In 1692, Pietro, Margherita Teresia, and children Giacomo and Maddalena (the elder, AKA Giovanna), were living with Pietro's father. Pietro's father died sometime before 1698 while in his 60s.

Tragedy struck in 1700 when eldest son Giacomo was stricken in an apparent epidemic that took ten lives between, March and April, and in a year that saw 23 parishioners pass. He died on April 3, just two weeks before his 10th birthday. Giacomo was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1700]

The family continued to grow and in 1702 a 19-year-old Catterina Cerini was enumerated with them as a "servant," but died soon thereafter.[Cen 1702] It is not yet known if or how Catterina might have been related to Margherita Teresia.

Margherita Teresia (Cerini) Sartori died on August 23, 1710, at their home in Giumaglio, following a "grave and long illness." She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Margherita was reported to be "about 46 years" old[Dth 1710], but was 39. Margherita left Pietro with four children between the ages of 2 and 18.

Maria Margherita (Pozzi) Gaspari

Pietro married Maria Margherita (Pozzi) Gaspari, the widow of Daniele Gaspari on May 19, 1711, in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was just short of his 43rd birthday and she was about 33 years old. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connections of their relationship is not yet known) from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne. Recorded witnesses were Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Pietro Gasparini.[Mar 1711] Maria had a 10-year-old daughter, Giovanna, from her first marriage.

Two months after their marriage. Maria Margherita was named as the godmother and apparent namesake of Maria Margherita Marca/Marcha.[Bap 1711]

Maria Margherita (Pozzi Gaspari) Sartori died on January 23, 1712, at their home in Giumaglio, just eight months after their marriage. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was reported to be 33 years old, but was 34.[Dth 1712]

Maria Catterina Terini/Marchese2

Only five weeks after Margherita's death, Pietro remarried to Catterina Terini/Marchese2 on March 1, 1712, in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. He was 43 years old and she was 27. Interestingly, in their marriage record, Catterina was named as a "Catharina de Marchesijs," but later someone added a margin reference that named her as "Catharina Terina." Such interchanges between Terini and Marchese were common from about 1703 through 1724.

December 2014Before their marriage Pietro and Catterina obtained dispensation for several impediments from the Nuncio Apostolic in Lucerne: they were related by affinity (by marriage rather than by blood) to the third and fourth degrees in one line, to the fourth degree in another line, and were also related by consanguinity to the fourth degree (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connections of their relationships are not yet known.) Recorded witnesses were Stefano Pozzi, the brother of Pietro's late second wife, and Giovanni Giacomo Lesina.[Mar 1712]

Pietro and Catterina had four children together. The baptism records of children Maddalena3 and Pietro do not name Catterina's father, however, Pietro's godmother was named as "Joanna Maria, the daughter of Joannis Tarrini", perhaps Catterina's sister.[Bap 1716,1718]

September 2014Catterina "Terrina" was named as the godmother of Giovanni Pietro "Terrinus" in 1716[Bap 1716B], but curiously, the same baptism record was retranscribed over a decade after fact and misattributed to the year 1718. In this record, Catterina was only identified as Pietro's wife (no family name) and the child was named as Giovanni Pietro Marchese.[Bap 1718B] The parents' and godparents' names (except for "Terrina"/"Marchese" were all consistent.

After 1716 (with the exception of the retranscribed baptism record), Catterina was consistently named as a Marchese. She was named as godmother to Giovanni Giacomo Tomaso Ianzini[Bap 1719] and Giuseppe Pozzi in 1729.[Bap 1729]

Youngest daughter Giovanna Maria is likely the one who died at the age of 16 on October 21, 1736, however her father's name was not recorded.[Dth 1736]

Maria Catterina (Marchese) Sartori likely died between 1729 (her last mention as a godmother[Bap 1729]) and 1741[Cen 1741]. She is estimated to have been in her late 40s or early 50s.

Giovanni Pietro continued on through 1741 when he was enumerated, at the age of 75, with his sons Giovanni and Giuseppe, their wives, and 10-year-old granddaughter Maria Teresia Sartori.[Cen 1741]

Margherita(?)

August 2014A woman named Margherita Sartori died on January 24, 1744, at her home in Giumaglio. She was 60 years old and the first of four or five adults in the parish who died over the following six weeks. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1744A] If she was Pietro's wife, she was not counted as such in the parish census of 1741. A review of the census of that year shows only one woman named Margherita of a similar age: Mrs. Margherita (Cerini) Pozzi, who was 60 years old and still married to Benedetto Pozzi.[Cen 1741]

Pietro's Death

Giovanni Pietro Sartori died on February 2, 1744, at his home in Giumaglio, a week after Margherita Sartori, and the second of five adults in the parish who died over a six-week period. He was reportedly about 76 years old.[Dth 1744B]

March 2016Following a fire at the church in Coglio on January 24, 1745, Giovanni Pietro Sartori was named as a witness in the reconstruction of parish baptism and marriage records and variously recorded as "Giovanni Pietro," "Giovanni," and "Giacomo Pietro." It is unclear as to the sources used to reconstruct the records and whether they could have predated the fire which occured a year after Giovanni Pietro's death, so this reconstruction may have been witnessed by one of his sons. Son Giacomo Pietro died in 1732, which could make son Giovanni the more likely witness after the fire. Whoever it was, he was named as witness in four baptisms records for the Lafranchi families of Coglio; a baptism for Tomaso Fanora of Coglio, with whom Giovanni was paired as witness for the baptism and for those of the Lafranchi families; the marriage of Antonio Guglielmetti of Coglio to Maria Catterina Gaspari of Giumaglio (which took place in 1671) and the baptism of Giovanni Delnotaro (1681), both of which were witnessed with Giacomo Piezzi (II); and the marriage of Guglielmo Guglielmetti and Giovanna Cerini (1680) of Giumaglio. The last three all took place in Giovanni Pietro Sartori's childhood.
