Pozzi Family History, Part A

May 2016
Contents

May 2016We descend from three branches of the sizeable Pozzi family of Giumaglio and Coglio so these pages are divided into those three branches (Parts A, B, and C) and a top-level view of each of the other branches (Part X):

Italian and Latin Names
Parish records, from which most of this information comes, is primarily written in Latin, while civil records are primarily written in Italian. Names that have only been observed in Latin but have either been converted to Italian or left in Latin are rendered in italics.

Giovanni POZZI2A(~1631-~1706)

A1. Giovanni Pozzi2A was born about 1631, likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. He married Catterina Scamoni2 of Giumaglio and had as many as nine children:

A11. Giacomo Pozzi (1666) 17 Jan 1682 (15)
A12. Benedetto Pozzi (13) Oct 1667 16 Dec 1741 (74)
A13. Lucrezia Pozzi 14 Jan 1669 23 Nov 1727 (58)
A14. Catterina Pozzi 18 Oct 1670 --  --
A15. Giovanni Agostino Pozzi 23 Aug 1672 (18 Nov 1694) (22)
A16. Simone Pozzi 28 Oct 1673 (> 1709) (> 35)
A17. Giovanna Maria Cristina Pozzi2 16 Jun 1677 19 Jan 1748 (70)
A18. Cristoforo Pozzi 22 Jul 1682 (> 1709) (> 28)
A19. Giacomina Pozzi 23 Jun 1865 (> 1709) (> 24)
Pozzi Connections
July 2015Giovanni may have been a first cousin of Don Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Notary of Giumaglio, as suggested by the marriage of daughter Lucrezia to the notary's likely son Francesco, at which time Lucrezia and Francesco were identifed as second cousins.

Giovanni and Catterina named the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomo: no baptism records found in Giumaglio before 1667;
  2. Benedetto: Giacomo Cerini and Maria Marca[Bap 1667];
  3. Lucrezia: Giovanni Lesina and Giacomina Stolfi[Bap 1669];
  4. Catterina: Antonio Delnotaro and Maria Giacomina Lesina[Bap 1670];
  5. Agostino: Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Mazzini) Romagno[Bap 1672];
  6. Simone: Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Giovanna Pozzi[Bap 1673];
  7. Giovanna Maria Cristina2: Giovanni Cerini (Jr.) and Mrs. Maria (Parinoni) Pozzi[Bap 1677];
  8. Cristoforo: Giacomo Pozzi and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Cerini[Bap 1682]; and
  9. Giacomina: Don Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town doctor, and Mrs. Maria (Marindona) Marca of Cerentino.[Bap 1685]
Pozzi-Scamoni
January 2015Catterina may have had brother named Giovanni Giacomo Scamoni (I) who died prior to the 1692 parish census. His sons (her nephews?), Giovanni and Giovanni Giacomo (II), were enumerated following her household between 1692 and 1703.[Cen 1692-1703] Giacomo (II) went on to marry a Giovanna Maria Pozzi, whose relationship to the other Pozzi families is not yet known.

The parish census of 1692 recorded Giovanni, Catterina, and all the children except Maria2. Oddly the birth order and ages were reversed for Cristoforo and Giacomina, recording Cristoforo as two years younger than Giacomina, rather than older, as in later censuses.[Cen 1692]

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. The four elder Pozzi childern, Giacomo, Benedetto, Lucrezia, and Catterina were all confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22[Con 1677A]; and the two younger, Agostino and Simone, were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31.[Con 1677B] Their godparents were named as follows, in order: Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, Giovanni Cerini (Jr.), Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi (suspected sister to Giovanni Cerini (Jr.)), Mrs. Giovanna (Bonetti) Cerini (wife of Giovanni Cerini (Jr.)), Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, and Giovanni Antonio Pozzi, the ferrier. [Con 1677A-B]

Son Giovanni Agostino (recorded simply as "Giovanni, son of Giovanni Pozzi") may have been the one who died on November 18, 1694, apparently in a fall from a cliff, at the age of 22. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1694]

By 1698, sons Benedetto and Simone were both marked as absent, perhaps working some distance away from Giumaglio.[Cen 1698]

Catterina (Scamoni) Pozzi died at her home in Giumaglio on January 12, 1702, the same day that the parish census of 1702 was recorded. She was about 60 years old. Catterina was buried the same day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1702, Cen 1702]

In 1702, sons Benedetto and Simone continued their absence and Giovanna Maria Cristina appeared for the first time as two years older than Cristoforo, as she was again in 1703. Based on age, Giovanna Maria Cristina is likely our Maria2. [Cen 1702, 1703]

A year later, son Cristoforo was labelled absent along with his two elder brothers.[Cen 1703]

Giovanni Pozzi likely died on either October 8, 1705, or three months later on January 8, 1706, at his home in Giumaglio. On those dates, two men named Giovanni Pozzi died, reportedly aged 58 and 62 respectively. Neither age fits well for our Giovanni, who would have been about 74. The other, who also went by the name "Zane," would have been about 62, which fits for the later date, but if the priest was clear about their relative ages, might the first refer to the younger and the second to the elder? The two records give no further clues to distinguish the two men. Both were buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1705,1706]

Giacomo POZZI (1666-1682)

A11. Giacomo Pozzi was born about 1666, likely in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and died at the young age of 15.

June 2015During the last week of May 1677, The Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Dom. Dom. Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Giacomo was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia along with his next three youngers siblings. His godfather was named as Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi.[Con 1677]

Giacomo Pozzi died at the age of 15 on January 17, 1682, at the family home in Giumaglio. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1682]

Benedetto POZZI (1667-1741)

A12. Benedetto Pozzi was baptized on October 13, 1667, and likely born the same day in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. His godparents were named as Giacomo Cerini and Maria Marca.[Bap 1667] He married Margherita Apollonia Cerini on December 29, 1704, in what may have been a double wedding with his sister and Margherita's brother at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Mar 1704A/B] He was about 37 years old and she about 23. They had four daughters, but only one survived to adulthood:

A121. Maria Catterina Pozzi (4) Aug 1706 (4 Sep) 1715 (9)
A122. Maria Domenica Pozzi 7 Jun 1711 (Infancy) (Infancy)
A123. Giacomina Pozzi (1711-1713) 2 Nov 1766 (55)
A124. Giovanna Maria Pozzi 9 Jan 1716 10 Dec 1724 (8)

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Benedetto was confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time his godfather was named as Giovanni Cerini (Jr.).[Con 1677]

Benedetto married later in life, and while he was single was noted as absent from his family from 1698 through 1703, along with his younger brother Simone, and later Cristoforo. They perhaps were working some distance away from Giumaglio.[Cen 1698-1703]

Benedetto and Margherita were wed on the same day as his sister Maria2 and Margherita's brother Antonio Cerini2. Benedetto and Maria were both named as children of Giovanni Pozzi and Margherita and Antonio were both named as children of "the late Antonio." Their three traditional marriage declarations, usually made on three successive Sundays, or on holy days in between, were made on December 26, 27 and 28, the Feasts of Saint Stephen, Saint John, and the Holy Innocents, respectively. Such a rapid progression is rather unusual and often indicated a "shotgun wedding," but neither Margherita nor Maria had children during their first year of marriage. The recorded witnesses to Benedetto and Margherita's and marriage were Giovanni Pietro Moretti (Sartori)2 and Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi.[Mar 1704A/B]

Benedetto and Margherita chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Catterina: Giovanni Antonio Cerini (relationship unknown) and Giovanna Giumini[Bap 1706];
  2. Domenica: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Anna Maria Jorio of Brontallo, Val Lavizzara[Bap 1711];
  3. Giacomina: no baptism record found in Giumaglio; and
  4. Giovanna: Stefano Pozzi and Maria (Cerini or Ianzi).[Bap 1716]

Benedetto was named as the godfather to niece Maria Pozzi[Bap 1697] and nephew Giovanni Antonio Cerini3.[Bap 1712]

Of their four daughters, one died in infancy, and two at the ages of 9 and 8. Only Giacomina lived to marry. She married Giovanni Giacomo Felice Pedrotti in 1730 and Benedetto was recorded as one of the witnesses.[Mar 1730]

Benedetto Pozzi died at his home on December 16, 1741, two weeks before his 37th wedding anniversary. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1741] Benedetto was in his early 70s.

Margherita Apollonia (Cerini) Pozzi died a year later, probably on January 19, 1743. She was named only as "Margherita Pozzi" and the month was illegible but was followed by another record dated January 30, 1743. She died at her home and was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1743] Margherita was likely 67 years old.

Lucrezia POZZI (1669-1727)

A13. Lucrezia Pozzi was born and baptized on Monday, January 14, 1669, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. Her godparents were named as Giovanni Lesina and Giacomina Stolfi.[Bap 1669] She married Francesco Pozzi, reported her second cousin, on April 29, 1687.[Mar 1687] They had six children, but only two daughters survived to adulthood:

A131. Giacomina Maria Pozzi 7 Sep 1689 11 Jan 1690 (4 mos.)
A132. Maria Catterina Pozzi 21 Oct 1692 18 Jul 1721 (28)
A133. Orsola Giacomina Pozzi 18 Nov 1694 24 Apr 1743 (48)
A134. Maria Pozzi (6) Dec 1697 29 Jun 1700 (2)
A135. Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi Sep 1705 Dec 1705 (3 mos.)
A136. Maria Pozzi 10 Nov 1707 (Infancy) (Infancy)

When Lucrezia was 8 years old, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Lucrezia and three of her siblings were confirmed at the Church of San Maurizio in Maggia on May 22, at which time her godmother was named as Mrs. Giovanna (Cerini) Pozzi.[Con 1677]

Prior to her marriage and when she was about 15 or 16 years old, Lucrezia was named as the godmother to Catterina Pozzi.[Bap 1685]

Lucrezia and Francesco wed at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta on April 29, 1687. She was about 18 years old and he about 26. Before their marriage they obtained dispensation for the impediment of the fourth degree of consanguinity (i.e., second cousins, however, the exact connection of their relationship is not yet known). Recorded witnesses were Giovanni Pozzi (Jr.), Giovanni Pietro Sartori2, and Giovanni Antonio Pozzi (Jr.). Their marriage record also identified Francesco's father as Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, perhaps referring to the village don who had recently died.[Mar 1687]

Lucrezia and Francesco chose the following as godparents for their children:

  1. Giacomina (elder): Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini and Angelica Pozzi, both of Coglio[Bap 1689];
  2. Catterina: Carlo Antonio Pozzi, the town doctor and don, and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Bonetti, wife of Carlo Maria Bonetti[Bap 1692];
  3. Giacomina (younger): Giovanni Antonio Pozzi and Mrs. Catterina (Pozzi) Caneverini, wife of Giovanni Giacomo Caneverini of Coglio (presumed as above)[Bap 1694];
  4. Maria (elder): Benedetto Pozzi, Lucrezia's elder brother, and Mrs. Maria (Delnotaro) Pozzi, wife of Giacomo Pietro Pozzi[Bap 1697];
  5. Giacomo: no baptism record found in Giumaglio[Dth 1705]; and
  6. Maria (younger): Giovanni Angelo Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Sartori) Bonetti, subsequent wife to Carlo Maria Bonetti, above.[Bap 1711]

Francesco Pozzi died on May 8, 1708, at his home in Giumaglio, at the age of 47 years. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1708]

At the time Lucrezia was widowed, daughters Catterina and Giacomina were 15 and 13 years old.[Cen 1709] Lucrezia carried on another 19 years.

Lucrezia Pozzi died on November 23, 1727, at the age of "about 60 years." She was buried in the cemetery next to the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1727]

Giovanni Agostino POZZI (1672-1694)

A15. Giovanni Agostino Pozzi was born on August 23, 1672, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized on August 28. His godparents were named as Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Mrs. Maria (Mazzini) Romagno.[Bap 1672]

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Agostino and his younger brother Simone were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time Agostino's godfather was named as Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi, the town doctor.[Con 1677]

Agostino was enumerated, at the age of 19, with his parents and siblings in the first parish census of 1692.[Cen 1692] He was not found in the parish census of 1698[Cen 1698] and therefore may correlate to a "Giovanni, the son of Giovanni Pozzi," who died in an apparent fall from a cliff on November 18, 1694, at the age of 22 (Agostino's age). Giovanni was buried in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1694]

Simone POZZI (1673->1709)

A16. Simone Pozzi was born on October 28, 1673, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland, and baptized the following day. He may have been named for Father Simone Gaggioni, Vicar of Maggia and Coglio, who substituted a few times in the 1670s at the parish of Giumaglio. Simone's godparents were named as Doctor Giovanni Giacomo Pozzi and Giovanna Pozzi.[Bap 1673] He married Angelica Cerini on December 2, 1700, but apparently had no children.

During the last week of May 1677, Giovanni Ambrogio Torriano, Bishop of Como, held mass confirmation ceremonies for parishes in the valley at Maggia, 4 kilometers downriver, and Someo, 2 kilometers upriver. Simone and his elder brother Agostino were confirmed at the Church of Santi Placido ed Eustachio in Someo on May 31, at which time Simone's godfather was named as Giovanni Antonio Pozzi, the town ferrier.[Con 1677]

Simone, as well as his eldest brother Benedetto, were noted as absent from their family from 1698 through 1703, perhaps working some distance away from Giumaglio. Despite being away during this time, Simone returned to marry Angelica in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, on December 2, 1700. Recorded witnesses to their marriage were Bernardo Lesina and Guglielmo Stolfi.[Mar 1700]

After their marriage, Simone resumed his "absense" and wife Angelica lived his parents and siblings.[Cen 1702-1703]

Angelica (Cerini) Pozzi died on January 18, 1709, at her home in Giumaglio, following an illness that left her in an incapacitated state such that she was unable to confess or receive communion beforehand. Angelica was reportedly 43 years old, but was more likely about 33 years old. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1709]

Simone lived with his eldest brother Benedetto following Angelica's death and left no futher record in Giumaglio after 1709.[Cen 1709]

Maria Cristina (POZZI) CERINI2(1677-1748)

January 2015A17. Giovanna Maria Cristina Pozzi2 was born on June 16, 1677, in Giumaglio, Ticino canton, Switzerland. She was baptized the following day as "Joanna Maria Christina" and in the margin she her record was labeled "Maria Christina." Her godparents were named as Giovanni Cerini (Jr.) and Mrs. Maria (Parinoni) Pozzi.[Bap 1677] Maria married Antonio Cerini (II)2 on December 29, 1704, in what may have been a double wedding with her brother and Antonio's sister at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Mar 1704A/B] It also turns out that both Antonio and Maria shared the same godfather. They had six children:[Cen 1741]

January 2015

As a child, Maria was curiously not counted in the parish censuses of 1692 and 1698 and it wasn't until 1702 and 1703 that she, based on age, appeared as Giovanna Maria Cristina.[Cen 1692-1703] After she married, she was only known as "Maria" until her death, at which time she was recorded as "Giovanna Maria."[Dth 1748]

Maria and Antonio were wed on the same day as Benedetto Pozzi and Margherita Cerini, both believed to be Maria's and Antonio's siblings. Maria and Benedetto were both named as children of Giovanni Pozzi and Antonio and Margherita were both named as children of "the late Antonio." Their three traditional marriage declarations, usually made on three successive Sundays, or on holy days in between, were made on December 26, 27 and 28, the Feasts of Saint Stephen, Saint John, and the Holy Innocents, respectively. Such a rapid progression is rather unusual and often indicated a "shotgun wedding," but neither Maria nor Margherita had children during their first year of marriage. The recorded witnesses to Maria and Antonio's marriage were Giovanni Battista Pozzi, who later became a priest and vicar of Someo and Giumaglio, and Daniele Gaspari.[Mar 1704A/B]

Maria and Antonio and chose the following as godparents for their children:

  2. Domenica Catterina: Giacomo Tomaso Pozzi and Mrs. Giacomina (Adami) Giovanotti[Bap 1711];
  3. Antonio3: Benedetto Pozzi, believed to be Maria's brother and Antonio's brother-in-law, and Giacomina Cerini[Bap 1712];
  4. Ludovico: Giovanni Giacomo Giumini2 and Catterina Pozzi, Maria's likely niece[Bap 1714];
  5. Giovanna (elder): Giacomo Filippo Pozzi, brother to Stefano, above, and Giacomina Pozzi, daughter of Giovanni Pietro Pozzi[Bap 1716]; and
  6. Giovanna (younger): Don Giovanni Francesco Pozzi of Coglio and Giacomina Pozzi, Maria's likely niece and sister to Catterina above.[Bap 1721B]

Antonio (or possibly even his 16-year-old son Antonio) was named as godfather to nephew Giacomo Pietro Cerini.[Bap 1729]

In 1741, the household included son Antonio's wife and their two children.[Cen 1741]

Antonio Cerini died at his home in Giumaglio on September 13, 1744. He was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.[Dth 1744] Antonio was 62 years old.

Giovanna Maria Cristina (Pozzi) Cerini died three years later on January 19, 1748, at her home in Giumaglio, following a weeks-long illness. She was buried the following day in the cemetery of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Maria was recorded to have been "about 69 years" old but was 70 years old."[Dth 1748]
